Steve Hocking Gone

I don’t believe in conspiracy theories and I don’t believe that such a juggernaut of a football team should be so easily shut down that the man on the mark standing still could end an era

It hastened our demise. We died unnaturally.

Yeah none of it is proof that Hocking actually set out to sink us. But for me it's as Ian Fleming wrote - once (6-6-6) is happenstance; twice (zone-busting kickout) is coincidence. The third time (Stand!) is enemy action.

If the 22 blokes you play against every week weren’t subject to the same set of rules I’d perhaps have more sympathy

The ability to wave 2 flags or blow a whistle does not make you a manager.

Gee i reckon 3 blokes who have actually played the game at the highest level this century and also been adjudicators in the middle or behind the goals might have some insightful knowledge, resources and suggestions on how they perceive and see the game and what parts of the games and it's rules that need attending to than some Joe Normal or archaic dinosaur behind a desk

So Steve is being celebrated for raising the scoring of the game by the media, although he’s only improved it since the lowest scoring seasons in over 50 years…

Those lowest scoring seasons that occurred after Hockings initial rule changes

So he’s implemented more rules to improve the scoring that he ruined with his rules in the first place but the scoring is still below the ave before he implemented anything
How anyone can say his changes has been a success is absolutely delusional

“The 2019 season was the lowest-scoring for a whopping 52 seasons, with the average team score a miserly 80.4 points per game. The year before it was 83.5 and in 2017 it was 89.5. At the turn of the century the average team score was 103 points per game.”

maybe if your team stopped doing this it'd help with those average scores

you realise Hocking played 199 games yeah?

OK so now it is a tiny rule change that could never end a dynasty.

But for months we have all heard that it is a genius tweak that has completely opened up the game, resurrected the careers of apparently washed up KPFs etc etc.

these narratives are all over the place again, where are we at?

I didn't like a lot of his rule management over the years, or lack of change to improve the game, e.g. we still haven't worked out HTB and for all his "praise" scoring has gone nowhere despite some fundamental changes to the game.

Still, there's no guarantee the next guy will be any better unfortunately.

Supporters from all clubs are expressing how happy they are he is gone and some Geelong supporters still think this is a Richmond thing.

It’s a Steve Hocking was sh*t at the job the AFL put him in thing.

Well Richmond supporters keep pushing their QAnon theory that Hocking was part of a conspiracy to bring them down so.....

Being Shit at job is one thing, part of a conspiracy man is another thing. I also think he was shit at the job, but I don't have any hopes that the next bloke from the boys club will be any better.

Love to see a stat showing goals scored directly from free kicks this year compared to previous years..umps seem to be paying a lot more soft frees in front of goals, scoring would be even lower without these cheapies.
More soft frees in front of goal = more goals = more ads = more ad $$$$$ = Channel 7 happy = AFL HQ happy

From The Age 3 hours ago:

"While scoring overall is not as high to this point in the season as it was in 2017 and 2018, it is not far off. It is also higher than 2019 and 2020 (although 2020 did have shorter quarters). On the celebration of the return of the key forward, there have been 35 hauls of five goals or more by a player so far in 2021."

.

I'm SHocked. All these rule changes and weird interpretations have done in increase confusion, slow the game down and force coaches to learn how to manipulate the rule changes.

If performance is the measure of the person, then SHocking is a total failure in his AFL role.

I don't get it, months ago when the Herald-Sun allegations came out, Geelong fans were all 'see, Richmond cheat on the mark, that's why Hocking had to make the rule change'

Now it's 'haha Richmond are delusional, rule changes didn't target them'

So which narrative are we running with?

Was Hocking's stand rule proof that Richmond are cheats?

Or are the Tigers fans just paranoid?

Or we go for a new convenient narratve?
Combination of all that plus loss of hunger and age. The way they’ve played the last two weeks highlighted that. Refused to pressure & refuses to chase. With or without those rule changes it wouldn’t have made any difference, especially against GC. All good sides come to an end at some stage but only great clubs reload and climb up again as shown several times by Hawthorn, Geelong & Sydney. I’d be more excited for a reload by the club than moaning about the fall back. You don’t want to do a Brisbane & be in the wilderness for a while. You all give to much credit to Hocking for your drop down which then masks issues going forward imo way way to much. Do you all think Dimma is sitting there crying into his cornflakes yelling “Hocking,Hocking,Hocking” like you all are? Nah he’d be planning the next assault as we speak.

Taking over from Brian Cook as CEO of Geelong... Not sure if his tenure would be considered a success.
Watched the "On theCouch" boys last night talking about Hockings legacy, those sycophants were saying how pro active he was in doing so much for the sport, to me his legacy will be the ruination of the sport as a contact sport, where above head excuse became an avenue to change the rules at a whim every year , the Statue rule opened up the game, true.
Funny we had to have a new rule to "open up the game"?
There is a list so long of changes under his name and a couple of others, that list is so long and I have written on BF about it many times, and complained and one major thing Hocking has done to wreck the sport is to allow the whistle to be the endless ruler, or stoppages, I don't remember that word , stoppages are what is killing the sport, no flow every contest can be a free kick , depending on how the umpire reads these unbelievable petty infringements that, this is the worst, make no difference but give advantage where there does not deserve to be one! And contesting and defending is killed.
And in having done that, Hocking has created a nightmare where games are sometimes won or lost on accidental or incidental infringement, many causing free kick goals, of which they are nearly becoming the majority.
I won't go on, any one out there who knows football knows what has happened to the game, the on going rule fiddling and changing has been a way to destroy our precious game and turn it into a muddle of confusion still packs forming, I saw a ball up over the weekend, in the centre that resulted in 4 more ball ups, one after the other
That is good to look at?????????????????????? You got to be kidding. Rules to suit 2 not needed extra clubs.
Hocking is/was a wrecker. Gone to Geelong thank christ he's out of the rules destruction office.
if anything can be said, the statue rule was good, the penalties attached to making a mistake with that rule usually by accident is so unfair and over the top, in fact the rules have become the perfect example of unfairness and confusion.
So you ruined the game Hocking you and yours thats your legacy.Healey Riewolt and Lyon, wake up to yourselves show some guts? I reckon Brownie wouild have said something last night.

Correct! He is probably a product of the money machine the AFL has tried to become, even Healey saying last night that advertising is the basis of the AFL , well football was once ,Dr Tigis , your comments are perfect!
Weird interpretations and absolute confusion, it leads people to ask , why!
Why the mass change. We've seen worse injuries in collision football, than someone being badly scragged around the neck.
Called head high, mostly its a finger touch, or a shoulder drop, where one individual has managed it to perfection to get free kicks. Opponents don't even know they've infringed, sometimes with a fingernail???

If this individual did not have a terrible habit that he himself has instilled into his brain, practiced to make it automatic when he's tackled well its cheating . If he didn't have that flaw he would be a tough champion , but he's not. He's from where Hocking is going!
That rule over done, has created this fellows practiced action, yet he gets away with it all the time, that is one, ONLY ONE, example of the many many terrible unfair and unneeded things Hocking and McGlachlan and Demitriou brought to the Australian Rules football and other rule change helpers. What they have done does not just make me angry, its turned footy into frustration and it is heartbreaking watching the kids get brainwashed into thinking this ocer adjudicated thing now is normal.
Will Brad Scott, be a sycophant of the AFL, who do not own Australian Rules! Lets hope he is a breath of fresh air not a money man!

Amazing how many Richmond supporters believe the AFL conspired against them. Like really believe.

No way could they let a 1 in 37 year premiership streak roll on

I think you have your head in the sand if you think this will change with Hocking gone.
You could be right, but if the game gets more and more non contact with less opportunity to contest or defend with strength , then the castration of Aussie Rules will continue, has Brad SCott got the testicles to say Hocking did some really destructive things to the game, and has he ever, before him even Leigh and Peter Schwabb were involved , how much of a salary do these people get to keep up the AFL propaganda, head high stuff hasn't hurt any one like heavy collisions , so what is the HEAD HIGH fear all about, Litigation??? Why not have a club/ player life agreement insurance, that both sides sign as a risk acknowledgement to play in the sport they chose.
Then litigation won't happen, if, a late stage brain injured player is looked after financially and health wise by the club for life?

Perhaps that happens now? Then why? Why kill off heavy tackling, hell, to tackle????? To bump ?????? players making decisions almost airborn at full pace, this is bulldust AFL, punching arms by players trying to defend, WHAT??? To create more goals, some players now witrh a diluted competition cannot kick anymore, even the "Couch" agreed with that last night.
Personally thats the best news I have heard of Hocking leaving, I just hope and pray some rules that we see now that are confusing and only picked out by umpire perception, grey rules kill off sport of any kind, that is Hockings l;egacy. Scott hope you have some courage.
