Unfortunately we get the ‘media’ that we deserve.

If Ppl stop clicking and consuming (and believing anything and everythin) it might change. But because ppl won’t, the media won’t change. It will keep getting worse. There are some balanced stuff/ reporters out there btw.

I don't think they have the answers or any plan - and if they did they wouldn't give it to us anyway.
TBH we have played pretty poorly all year. Never put any sides away. Even vs the worst teams we have just squeaked away with the win after a scare.
It is greater than injuries and a new system it is an overall funk that sits over the whole joint.
IMO. #donate to the flight plan (the avionics are shot!)
I just don't think they have anything to say.

Our media representation has gone to shit since the saga, where we only output what is really needed to the bare minimum. Rodski has moved up the chain from General Manager Comms and Digital Media in 2013 to now be Cheif Commercial Manager. When Essendon was up and about, we all knew who he was, he was in everything; front and centre. You couldn't not see him, as he built his own brand.

Apparently, now we have the lovely Alexandra Stewart. Never seen her. Couldn't tell you what she looked like. Don't really know what she does. IMHO - the really poor aspect of the 'communication' is that we are hearing the same "what is this crap" from Lloyd, Watson, Connely et al - rather than the people whhoi matter most, being the club.

It doesn't help that there was reports out of the tail wagging the dog, where players were baulking at the game plan and changes being made. I wonder if this is where shit like McKenna banging on about wanting to play forward... when he hasn't really comprehended on how to play defensive at yet.

Rodski was your older style of media manager, ie a former journalist. So he probably had a few ideas how the media worked plus producing reasonable content.

Nowadays you have more and more career “media managers”, in that that’s all they’ve ever done. They’re career PR managers because there simply isn’t any jobs in journalism. So PR is their discipline, it’s all they know and you get a PR approach: say as little as possible (preferably nothing).

I know they’re light on because of COVID - Conor Walsh hosted a lot of the video stuff and is gone. But I think it’s more than that. It’s the whole approach.

Surely we deserve better from the club?

Worsfold has long been a poor communicator in public but it’s gone to a new level this year, which of course leads to the conclusion he’s simply checked out.

So maybe it’s Rutten, I dunno. Maybe it’s Richardson or one of the assistants. I don’t really care. But the club needs to enunciate SOMETHING on strategy, on how we’re trying to play, and how it’s going via updates.

It’s simple to do and could just be a weekly spot. It’s done in-house by the club so can be planned without having to worry about what questions journos are going to ask.

It’s not 1995. People expect and deserve better than a weekly selection announcement and a “we’re disappointed, we have to improve / we’re really proud, great effort” after the game.
I wish it was 1995. We were half decent.

Imagine if we did one of those netflix series where you give full access to a camera crew, the coaches box on game day would be a hoot. I wonder if they ever ask questions like should we man up the loose or should we tag Neale or Macrae?
Like 'Sunderland for Life' (which is a great series btw)?
Then ours would be 'Bombers 4 lyfe'.... Which probs would end up being a bit repetitive

Does anyone think the club will fold and put up Rutten for the pressers this year or is it to remain Woosha's domain?
I don't think they can, unless Worsfold takes the night off and Rutten is officially the stand-in senior coach that day. Contractually obliged to make the senior coach available, not any old pleb from the coaching department.

I hope not, if only to troll the shitty football media.
It will be interesting to see what happens. There may be agitation with the current messaging from behind the scenes. Most supporters don't get info from places like this - they get it from media or the coach after the game and There's some WTF is going on at Essendon talk in the media.

You don't win premierships without a sound defensive structure and defensive game plan. So no problems with the coaches taking time to implement one. Ball movement comes after the defensive set up is sound.
The frustrating thing is for a few years Woosha was telling us they are putting a defensive structure in place and then along comes Rutten and now they are learning a new defensive structure. So we basically treaded water for about 3 years post 2016, after the Saga, and are doing again so now.

You do not get an appreciation of Richmond's defensive strategy from TV, you have to see it live and from where you can view the whole ground.
They have tweaked it since 2017, and particularly this year, I think due to the shortened quarters and the addition of Lynch forward with Riewoldt.
The whole Richmond defensive structure is likely an upgrade/incarnation of Clarko's cluster from Hawthorn's premiership years earlier in the decade.

In 2017 they basically had Rance at fullback and Riewoldt at FF, a ruckman, and everyone else was a running player.

Defensively, they have 4 lines of 4 players, (with Rance at FB and Jack at FF making up the 18). The lines work both vertically (up and down the ground) and horizontally (across the ground) but they do warp and bend depending on where the ball is (you can see this mostly at stoppages near the boundary.)

When a player has to 'go' to attack the footy/contest, a midfielder does not have to run 50 - 80 m to cover defensively like in the old days or 1v1 defence, he just fills a slot in the grid and the whole grid shuffles to accommodate the player/players at the contest. Ultimately this is less taxing on the player group over the course of a game and season, and should leave less 'holes' to be exploited by the opposition when they are attacking. When it is understood by the playing group and they have practiced and practiced it, they get better and better at it, until you get to Richmond levels of 2017, 2019, where it appears seamless.

It relies on all players understanding and fulfilling their part and having faith and trust in one another that they will do so. This relies upon a continuity in the playing group. My biggest worry for us to implement a similar plan and to be successful with it is we need more running players with some size and aerial ability. We also need 'buy in' from all players. This game plan relied on Jack Riewoldt relentlessly smashing packs up forward and bringing the ball to ground, or 'squaring' or 'halving' contests when he was outnumbered. I can remember him sooking it up in 2016 as he adjusted from being the goal kicking superstar struggling with the team who was struggling with the game plan (much like our forwards this year) to a dedicated team player 'filling his role' as the forward battering ram.

I doubt it and what will it really achieve to be honest. He will say the same as Woosha as far as performance goes and dodge the hand over questions. He is not going to stand up there and say this bloke is crap or we are only going bad because our B grade players are injured and we have to play the D grade set.

"Learning to defend" is code for we thought we had a good forward line with Joe and Raz and Walla and Stringer leading the way but now the forward line is ****ed and full of spuds so we can not kick a score.

Thats is what you have to do when you don't have Cox, Kerr, Judd, Cousins, Embley, Fletcher and Braun in the midfield.

I see two paths depending on results for the rest of the year. Plan A - If we put in ok performances for the rest of the year the current set-up will remain in place.

Plan B -we take repeat smashings and Woosha disappears like the shield on a space shuttle reentry. And the club serves up Rutton to sell hope to the members for next season...

They could at least sell the youf, improvement of individual players or what worked/we hope to build around. Hell even have a shot at the martians or the oppo's basketball tactics to write your own headline that isn't a reference to how piss poor we are. Sheeds was the master of it. Even when there wasn't any progress the message was that there would be soon enough. The playing a dead bat and watching them outside off talking about invisible learnings does nothing to offer hope to an increasingly restless supporter base.
