This is his final dig at reviving his test form. A quiet series against the Aussies at home could be the final nail in his international career.

On the current matter though, the greatest ODI player of all time for mine. 18,500 runs at just under 45 and a strike rate of 86 opening up. Insanely good record.

What a superstar. :thumbsu:

He'd certainly be up there! I find it hard to go past Gilchrist though. His average/aggregate may not have been as high but I think he'd be first chosen in about every Best Ever ODI XI.

Without doubt one of the finest cricketers ever seen. Will finish on an incredible 198 tests if he retires in the series against Australia.

Sad to see great players like him and Ponting retire. These are his stats and they still amaze me every time i see them:
Batting and fielding averages
Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 4s 6s Ct St

463 452 41 18426 200* 44.83 21367 86.23 49 96 2016 195 140 0
We'll miss ya buddy.

The best of the best a true champion and I was privileged to see him live on a few occasions. Those stats are amazing and I still think he could have played ODI's for at least another year.

Hope he plays on at least another year in the test arena, I am guessing it will all depend on the Australia series.

Will miss him, he has been a part of our lives, modest on and off the field, great champion.

What a star. In saying that, I hope he retires from test cricket too. Don't want another Ponting vs South Africa scenario for Sachin where it's obvious he has to retire and he does it mid-series. What a gun, he and Punter are two of my favourite batsmen

As much as a player career shouldn't be about protecting an average, I hate to see Sachin end the same way Ponting did.
He is though, since the beginning of 2011 he has 1 century and is averaging 35.9, with the last two series being even worse NZ ave 21 & England ave 18 . It is a shame, but unfortunately that is what makes you relise that you are past it.

There have been similarities in the way both Ponting and Tendulkar have started this season. Ponting made scores of 85*, 162* and 60* for Tassie in the Sheffield Shield before finishing with a poor average against South Africa. Tendulkar also averaged poorly against England after having made 137 in a first class game for Mumbai.

The most outstanding mark on his ODI record is the 200* in Gwalior at 37 years of age. I didn't see it coming and it was fitting that it was him that finally achieved it.

Shame Bangladesh hadn't set a few more runs for Watson to chase down in the game where he smoked them from pillar to post.

+1. Reminds me of Gilly in Hobart against Zimbabwe. Someone's going to cream the record one day.

I think Gayle will get one before he retires. Pretty sure Zimbabwe tour the West Indies next year, I assume there will be some ODIs, could be a massive chance if in form.

yeah he's basically been retired from odi's for a couple of years now - it's just now official.

the australia series could be his last in india as most of their cricket is now away for the next 3 years (only west indies late 2014 at home and a pakistan home series if they can sort themselves out - then nothing till late 2015 in india).

i hope he plays 200 tests. his number of tests/odi's..amount of runs in both forms and averages will be hard to surpass.

He's been semi retired from ODI for a long time, always picking and choosing the games he play, and he doesn't play that many

Hope he gets to 200 Tests, can't think of anyone that would break that for a long time

Cook's on 87 tests currently and he's only 28.
