The 2017 Ridiculous Trade Thread - Now with extra Nuff!

I'm not a B Hill fan. Him and Shoenmakers - can't stand that soft turkey.
I like Schoenmakers, admittedly as the underdog tough luck story; the little fullback that could. Got bags kicked on him all his career but with his indomitable spirit works his way into a flag side.

Hill is very meh though. Looks good in the Hawthorn system, but in a struggling side like Freo where he'll have to do some heavy lifting I think he'll go to shit and be shown up for the strictly outside, 'good in 30m of space where I can run' type player that he is.

At some point people are going to realise what should have been obvious for quite a while. Hawthorn are rather shit at developing players. Guns at trading though.

Your right look at how they developed Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Roughhead, Buddy ext......... oh wait

Past tense versus present. Very little to talk about from the last decade.

I'd say Dureya, Smith, Gunston, Breust, Stratton, Shiels, Puopolo and Rioli have all developed pretty nicely...

That's the cyclical nature of football tho, when you're up the top of the ladder for extended periods of time, you get little access to the true top end talent of the draft, and even then, there isn't much opportunity for them. Hawthorn as exhibit A, Geelong exhibit B. The latter, I suspect, realised this last year, so went after every experienced player they could to stall their decline. Of course, now because of it, when it comes, it will be epic.

Sydney is the exception of course, tho aided by their academies, they've still managed to draft some good young kids, and then have the luxury of giving them plenty of time to develop in the twos.

Smith was a mature ager who was nearly what he is now from day one. Gunston poached from the Crows and had already shown a lot. A couple of the others are just average role players. They've developed **** all in the way of talls or mids since they had those great drafts all those years ago.
It's going to suck when they get massive overs for average players in trade week and bring in more players from other clubs. Hopefully won't be enough to hold them afloat when the old blokes retire.

It's partially that but even including the years we were run by complete derp we've got then covered outside of first round picks.

I hope they have a huge dip when all the old boys buzz off but I respectfully disagree with you re development of those blokes.
Mature age or not, they still had to get Smith up to speed at AFL level and Gunston was still young enough and nowhere near the gun he is today.
Stratton, Breust, Rioli, Shiels are all bloody guns.

I reckon if they could work magic on Smith over one preseason and turn him into an immediate gun they would have been able to do it more often. Rioli's a freak. Reckon Breust is going to flop badly once traded north.

Yeah fair call on Breust, probably one of those blokes who's a better player for playing in a good side.
I love Stratton though and Dureya has turned himself into a bloody good footballer.
Shiels very handy too.

I must admit that Hawthorn intrigue me. Given that both Mitchell and Jaeger are worth a reasonable 1st minimum I fail to see how they satisfy both the Swans and GC.

They have to give up something. If Vickery is matched by Richmond it'll be even tougher.

And despite what Hawthorn supporters say, Litherland isn't worth a 1st.

What I think will happen:

Port receive pick 14
Gold Coast receive Hartlett + Hawthorn 3rd
Hawthorn receive O'Meara

Sydney receive 2016 Hawthorn 2nd, 2017 Hawthorn 1st
Hawthorn receive Mitchell, Sydney 2016 3rd.

Not bad.

I know they don't have a strong bargaining position but Gold Coast would want some more quality in terms of a pick though, surely.

Hawthorn can develop players, they've just been fortunate enough to be (and still are) a destination club, where they've been able to trade in their desired players. When they eventually dip (though they'll never reach 04 to 06 lows again) I have no doubt that they'll be able to develop players and playing finals again in no time.

I thought this was the ridiculous trade thread - that's way too sensible.

Duryea and Stratton are players of average talent who've been developed extremely well, love to watch them both. Shiels too, actually. Gunston came premade though. Puopolo is Australia's best downhill skier since Lydia Lassila.

Agree with most of that except I don't think Puopolo is a downhill skier (at least not as big of one as others in the league or that Hawks side; i.e. Brad Hill, Isaac Smith), more the benificiary of having a very specific (and pretty limited) role in a great side. He's just got to be a pest in the forward line and put pressure on the opposition defence coming out. Not a particularly hard job for someone with his skillset but he does it well.

Bit harsh on Poppy so we'll have to agree to disagree.
Go Hoges.

Isaac Smith isn't a downhill skiier. Was BOG for them in some of their shit ones. Really stands out and is a weapon.

I'm sorry but you've lost me.

How can you not like Benny Hill? His theme music has got us through many a dark hour on Gameday.

Oh you meant Brad Hill, carry on...
