they'd be losing a shitload of money on that, and how do they make it up? By gouging supporters even more for the next popular players personalized merch.

Pretty much. Welcome to the world of sports merchandise. The clubs wouldn't do it if it didn't make them a lot of money.

The clubs don't do anything.
This is an AFL initiative.
And this has as much to do with justifying 'fact finding missions' to the various sporting events across the world for AFL executives as it does for any real benefit for the clubs.

So now that we've been welcomed to this world of sports merchandise, could you please enlighten us to the various revenue streams available to the clubs, and even the whole supply chain. I know a little about the supply chain and the benefits to clubs, but unfortunately my knowledge comes from real world experience, not some press release from the AFL.
To be honest, I think you're drinking the Kool-Aid, which is an expression over here for someone who believes what they're told and goes along with it, without questioning the details, assuming those in charge know what they're doing. But fight the good fight if you must. But you will find if you ever actually research it that clubs would make more from increasing membership by $5 each than they would from this initiative. Not that the AFL cares whether clubs make money or not, they care whether the AFL makes money. With the money, comes the power to do whatever the hell they like. Look at the Bulldogs and North, they've strangled every realistic way of making money from them, and now they live on handouts from the AFL. Handouts which come with complete acceptance of any conditions the AFL choose to lumber them with.

I thought Collingwood's would be the easiest to read. Turns out I was wrong.

I am now against NOB of jumpers.

Given all of that, I'll reverse the question. Why are the AFL doing it if they won't make any money?

More guernsey sales overall means more people to wanting a slice of the pie, which means more manufacturers want to offer more money to get involved, which means more retailers are displaying guernseys prominently in their stores which again means more sales. Everybody wins apart from the consumer who gets what they want anyway.

The AFL is doing this because it will generate money. If someone can give me an alternative reason they are doing it I'm all ears.

They will make some money out of it, no doubt.
My position is that the amount of money they make is a pittance compared to the numbers floated by people with no real knowledge of the business.
And that includes the merchandise dept of the AFL.
The number of additional jumper sales is only on the players who change club.
So GWS supporters with Taylor Adams jumpers, Essendon supporters with Crameri on their backs, they're the ones who buy new ones.
I'd say they might make $2 to $3 k out of it a year.

I honestly believe this is as much about justifying trips to Europe and the US for Vlad and Gillon the Villain as it is anything else.
They go to the Super Bowl, spend thousands on hotels and grog, then come back and say "we've decided to do whatever they do, it was ace".
The AFL is doing it because it's a boys club filled with people with little to no idea of what to do, so they copy what other people are doing.
Problem is, our competition is nothing like the market of the any of the sports the AFL tries to copy.
That's why Meatloaf appears at the Grand Final, that's why we have the top drawing teams all playing each other twice per year, meaning the lower drawing teams play each other, on Sunday nights, with no-one there, and end up having to go cap in hand to the AFL because every avenue of making money on their own in kept from them and given to someone who doesn't need it.
That's why we had Heritage Round for a few years, until it became obvious clubs were losing money buying jumpers they could never sell, all based on the success of Throwback jerseys in the NFL.

Do you know why MW Jumpers are now bidded on and more expensive than other MW Jumpers?
Its the Names. The AFL are making a profit of it because the fans like the names that's why they bid more money on them. A normal Cox MW jumper is $200-$250. The MW with his name is $500 and to go more.

Here's what I think should happen for teams with initials or formed dates.

In the SANFL, the South Adelaide Panthers have the year that their club was formed on their guernsey. Not on the back but on the front. Where the 'AFL official tag' on the bottom left side of the jumper would be if they were in the AFL.

1876 clearly shown. It should be there.

'But what about the AFL official tag?'
Here's what I'd do. Go from this:
AFL tag Current.png
To this:
AFL tag new.png
Mainly because we know that they're in the AFL, and there's already an AFL logo on the right breast.

And where the Blades logo was, we shall promptly replace that with NMFC.
And as North Melbourne has the majority of their AFL tag outside the stripe, then the NMFC will be blue on a white background.

So from this:
AFL tag Kangaroos current.png to this: AFL tag Kangaroos.png

They're really bad photoshop jobs...but you KINDA get the idea..

THIS will leave the back to be much more free-er for a wider and bigger name.
AFL tag Cunnington.png

P.S. I reckon the AFL are using Haettenschweiler as a font.

No, that's because it's a one-off.
Cox might have a dozen MW WCE Home jumpers over a year, no-one really knows.
But the one from Round 5 with his name on it is the one from a particular game.
Essendon and Collingwood have the same success with Anzac day jumpers when their team wins.

Yeah, that's because this is a one off. If it was a regular thing, it wouldn't sell that high.

On top of that you can't even bid on normal jumpers during the year, WC sell MW jumpers for 1k framed or $600 (iirc) unframed though.

And the proof that this is just a complete waste, Lewis Roberts-Thomson has this on his back:

The numbers are like three quarters of their actual size now! I've just about gone full circle with these names on backs. I initially hated them, then when I saw the photo shoot I warmed to them, now I've seen them in action, I hate them again

The top one is a copy of an actual design from the Collingwood club and the bottom one is how I think the AFL should apply the names. Personally I don't like names on the jumpers but if they are going to do it, it needs to be done correctly. The texts need to be bigger and more loose than what we see. If you compare named jersey's or shirts from other feild sports....the AFL seems way off the mark.

This round has been a massive failure in regards to the names on jumpers IMO. Thoughts?
