In all seriousness, I couldn't believe that, at rookie draft time last year, we failed to pick up a backup KPF/ruckman, such as Cam Conlon. And this was because we promised Sam Gray a rookie spot, ostensibly to keep him with the Magpies, and had only one live pick in the rookie draft, which we used to pick Sam Russell.

Now Gray has made the most of his opportunity and played more AFL games than he could have possibly expected, but has he improved our side? I'd argue not. Russell had a bad injury that has kept him out for half the year, and may well turn out top be a good player but did we really need another half back flanker in November last year? My opinion was and is, NO.

We are currently paying the price for a poor drafting strategy that failed to extrapolate the current situation and make contingencies.

For some reason Kern doesn't like playing him up fwd.
In the last year I've seen him down back for the Power and in the midfield for the Maggies.

BUT he was up fwd vs the crows in the NAB cup this year.

If we need a backup on the rookie list it should be a backup for Lobbe (ruck, possibly Baulderstone) and an experienced backup for Impey (Krakouer)

When Westhoff gets a mark in the back 50, kicks to Schulz on the lead up the ground and suddenly our forward marking targets are Chad Wingard and Angus Monfries with no one crumbing except the opposition, I feel kinda vindicated in my stance that a third damn tall forward is necessary.

At no point was I even mad about Saturday night, I was just sitting in my seat going "well, this is going exactly as expected."

Oh god totally man, we are paying the price so hard! You know, sitting third on the AFL ladder in a season where no one predicted us to make the 8 with a list that is 3rd youngest in the comp. Only just in front of the expansion clubs. 4 losses, 3 of which have been less than 5 points, which could have very easily put us at 14-1. God this is such a disaster of a year and we should just give up now! Pull your friggen head in.

Yes. Westhoff is not a fulltime forward, more casual than part-time. Makes sense. That would mean that a second tall forward would definitely need to be a dependable mark and kick.

I remember this was Neil Craig's excuse for not picking Taylor Walker. It was a load of shit.

Cwaigy's non selection of Walker ( or more to the point 1 or 2 games and your out ) was baffling, he had an AFL ready body from day 1 and was probably a better kick then, than he is today. ( resident grammar nazis please note )
He used to tear most SANFL fullbacks a new one everytime he got dropped, I reckon I saw him kick multiple goals against the Maggies on at least 3 or 4 occasions.

Shaw is a bit different in that he had to waste most of last year searching for mammoth remains in the permafrost at noarlunga for the south siberian magoos.
He is arguably the best test case of all the Power players who have had their AFL careers put on hold by being picked up in the mini draft by a SANFL club who didn't want them anyway.

His improvement this season has been simply `mazing ' and he has to be a chance for an AFL gig even though the coach and Burgo have both suggested the club will be conservative with him this season.

That aside Butch is probably still the front runner for a call up due to his AFL experience.

Im genuinely getting pissed off with the lack of forward line height, has been sticking out like dogs balls for weeks. and id go as far as saying we would have won at least one or two of the cows, ess or syd games with an extra forward line tall.
The midget group isnt working, the favourites continue to get a game.

You can structure a forward line however you like but if not enough of them are presenting on leads it's going to fall apart, particularly in slippery conditions. Essendon's forwards got set shots on goal because they took marks on the lead, while ours seemed more intent on sitting back and trying to take mark of the year on just about every forward entry. Schulzy's as guilty of this as anybody.

He is versatile to go fwd and back but he doesn't go fwd at all now.

In the roast video about who would you want kicking for your life, Trengove said Stewart just infront of Schulz. I'd love to see him get a run up front instead of S. Gray. Provides great pressure, has a good set of hands and a good kick
