The point is can he actually coach?

You've got to remember that Dean Bailey took this list to 8 wins in 19 games in 2011, of which one was against a non-expansion side. Neeld has won 5 games since the start of the 2012 season, 1 of which was against a non-expansion side. The list was the same for all intents and purposes last year with the added bonus of Mitch Clark for half the season.

We're talking about a guy who has a lower win/loss record than Peter Rohde and Damien Drum and Matthew Primus. At some point it is fine to recognise the lemon factor. Only one coach since 1987 has a lower win/loss percentage having coached more than 20 games, and that's Buckenara.

I think the jury is still out. It is a mammoth task in turning Melbourne around and I think people underestimate that. I'd be keeping him there until the end of the year, yet things would need to improve for him to be considered for 2014.

I think he'll fail though, not necessarily because he can't coach but because he has the worst assistants and the worst senior group of players in the league. He'll be a very good assistant coach, but he has been set up to fail at Melbourne.

I think Melbourne need to just accept that they will be going millions into debt again, attract a proven coach who they will probably have to overpay to get him there, surround him with good, experienced assistants and use them (and the space in the salary cap) to attract some senior players to the club. But at the end of the year, because frankly no one in the Melbourne coaching ranks at the moment is ever going to be more than a caretaker coach and it would be a waste of money that could be used next year.

I wouldn't coach Melbourne if they offered me a million a year.

Who could deal with that kind of pressure week in, week out? This gig must be taking years of Neeld's life. Melbourne need a complete overhaul in all departments. They should do everything they can to get talent scouts and development coaches from teams like Geelong or Sydney... How can so many top draft picks fail?

The problem is he has totally mismanaged it up to now. There are rumours around other players being shitty. We've had a Cam Schwab special with some of these trades. We've got the hardcore supporters now giving up. It's not just the here and now, it's that this whole idea has been sold to the supporter base five years ago and everyone so royally ****ed it up that they've somehow left us WORSE off, and people just can't deal with it.

The supporters need to be sold hope, simply to try and halt the freefall the club is in on all fronts. The only way that can happen right now is to sack Neeld. We've all stopped listening.

Maybe Melbourne are seeking to sack him Mark Harvey style, turning up for work one morning and his parking spot is taken, key card no longer unlocks the door, no one answering his calls......

But they way worse then when Bailey was there and much of it was his own doings. He wanted to change the culture, so he ditched the experienced and loyal players. Now he is in the same situation as GWS and GC were, only they don't have 5 first round picks to help get some talent there

Sure they've had picks in the past, but their development has been woeful. Just about all of their early picks are worse than when they started

And what Senior player will want to go there? The only type of player they can attract is a player not good enough at another club, or one they'll over pay as they were about to retire. No one that will help them get better long term

They're in a deep hole, but they only have themselves to blame. They didn't have to get rid of Bailey who wasn't that bad

Neeld strikes me as a lonely man, being let down by alot of people he needs to rely on.
Surely he must resort to desperation stakes now - Turn into a real hardarse coach and see who on that list is made of what.
He may as well sink or swim, because they are all sinking together at the moment. Whether it's public humiliation of players to spur motivation, shaming poor efforts in front of the playing group, 6am sessions at St Kilda beach or simply just getting the cinder blocks out at training.

He is a dead an walking at this rate. Somethings gotta change and he, as a man and a coach may as well go down swinging.

What's the point of keeping him if it means that there's a player exodus at the end of the season. Melb can't afford to lose Watts, Jamar, & Frawley. The best way to keep those guys is get the new coach in there and hopefully he can convince them its worth sticking around. That the club is going to change. Things will get better. Leave Neeld in and you can pretty much guarantee all those players will go.

They would probably lose those players anyway, even if Neeld goes tomorrow. There is little hope in the prospective caretaker coaches at Melbourne.

If they have a proven senior coach lined up Neeld should go, but it's going to take a lot of effort to woo one to come over and I don't think they will be able to do it mid season.

Even if Neeld is kept to the end of the season and is then told his contract will not be renewed, the new coach will still have time to convince the disgruntled players to stay. They also save a few bucks to spend on the football department personnel next year.

Strongly disagree, if they don't act soon they'll lose everything. Sack neeld, sign up Choco Williams. Jobs done.

Even Gary Ayres would be better than Neeld and that's something coming from a Geelong supporter.

And Choco will come midway through the season?

Not sure that he'll come so easily and Melbourne can't just offer out multi million dollar contracts mid season. There has to be a process as they are cruising for a 1.5 million loss as it is.

If they wait until the end of the year the debt will be just as bad and then they risk losing sponsors and members as well. Waiting for the end of the season is the kind of weak attitude that got them into this mess. Even if they just put in a care-taker coach, Neelds sacking will send a message to the players. As for Choco who knows what he'd do. He's only a development coach at Richmond. So he could move on from there very easily.

What message would it send that hasn't been sent already with the sacking of Bailey dismissing of a number of players?

Jesus mate, why don't they do nothing then. Sign Neeld up for another 10 years and just go along being a shit club that eventually fades away like Fitzroy  I hope the MFC Board and CEO aren't like you...as weak as piss that is.

I think the club can get a bit more out of Neeld. They havent exhausted every option with him in charge at the moment. Whether they make him sacrificial and he starts singling out players, at the risk of losing the playing group or whatever.
I think the squad needs to be put through the wringer with Neeld in charge as one last roll of the dice. If no luck, time to move on.
Should hold off on giving him the bullet for the time being IMO.

I'm not suggesting they should or shouldn't sack Neeld. I just think the justification for doing so because it "sends a message" is flawed. There are a number of much better reasons to justify sacking him.

They also might consider keeping him to soak up the negativity for the bulk of the year before dismissing him later. That way the enthusiasm and hope injected via a new coach might last to the end of the year.

The message that things could get even worse, which is a distinct possibility given the prospective persons who would be in line for the caretaker position?

Choco is in a well paid job with little stress and nice hours. To think he'll drop that for a basket case he has no affiliation to would be surprising. He will need to be wined and dined and i'm not sure mid season is the time for that. Do it properly and don't rush the process.

Seems to me he already went too hard, too early in an effort to do that. Came in swinging and lost the players before he even had a chance to win them over.

Any further public humiliation will just exacerbate the problem imo. He really is a dead man walking.

Yeah, there are not many around who are qualified to drag Melbourne out of this. A premiership coach is needed IMO - It is a big job. Roos is the most ideal, and you'd prob need to throw 1.2 mill a season at him. And if it doesnt work, perhaps the club itself would be in mortal danger.

The next rung down would be Ratten or perhaps Mark Harvey. They are good value coaches, but I dont think they have the tools to get it done at Melbourne.

Bottom line: If Melbourne wield the axe - they need to have a plan B waiting in the wings. Needs to be good too.

Maybe something crazy like a Ratten / Matthews co coaching setup. It is high risk though. But times are tough.

I have never seen anything like this at Melbourne. I was a bit young to perceive what was going on at Fitzroy.
Neeld really is ordering his last meal in his cell right about now. Whereas characters like Colin Sylvia skate along with little to no accountability and he still seems to look down his nose at his coach.

I would be riding Sylvia the hardest of anyone at that club and if he goes to water, so be it. At least he will have had his breaking point tested and any subsequent new coach would be able to assess whether he has the ability to contribute to a future revival at the club.

I almost feel like Neeld has to be hated by his players now, if he is to be revered / respected by them. He needs to be ruthless for the sake of the club, the players that will follow will follow and the rest fall by the wayside.
