Glen Jakovich on SEN just made the point that Melbourne ought to sign everyone on 2-3 year deals at a minimum..players and coaches. Keeping the club stable isn't the worst idea I've heard.

can't just blanket it though.

'yeah lets just extend Cam pederson for 4 more years'

gotta be selective about who you actually want around. Plus you have to make a minumum of 3 list changes a year, every year.

Neeld obviously has pictures of somebody, doing god knows what to someone or something, that is underage......

Right decision for mine. A coach can only do so much, it has to come back on the players and their lack of desire to do the hard things. 9 Players had 2 or less tackles in the game. 9. Nearly half of the side struggled to get more than 2 tackles (Watts had 0!) when the opposition has around 100 more possessions than you. I means seriously, it's not good enough.

Injuries have also played a part, Grimes, Clark, Viney, Byrnes and Tom McDonald all out with injury, whilst Syliva is suspended. Put those guys back in and at least the talent goes up, and this is a club that can't afford to lack talent on field.

For mine, it's not Neeld, there is an under current of stench at that club, and bumping Neeld simply protects those that are happy to wallow in the cesspool. Back the man you put in, let him play out his vision for another season, then make the call. Let's be honest, they are going to get a crap draw TV wise anyway even if they win 4 or 5 in the home stretch, so suck it up and see what he can do next year.

Their draw post bye isn't too bad.

Dogs x 2, GC, GWS, Saints, Lions all to come.

They could let Neeld take another belting against the pies, then the new coach can come in and if he can galvanise the players he could win 3 or 4 games at the back end of the season.

The delay in sacking him could also be to give them time to bring someone from outside the club in rather than one of their pus assistants taking the reins.

We keep getting soft draws and I don't think it actually does us any good to be honest.

According to Caro, the board wanted Neeld gone today and replaced with Craig, but Jackson said it was financially impossible for them to sack him. So they kept him. For now.

She's basically suggesting they'll try to broker a deal with Neeld to walk in order to avoid a $600,000 payout. Why would he do that?

Just keep paying him but elevate Craig. I mean Melbourne has a successful AFL coach right there, if he wants to keep coaching and wants a senior position then they don't need to look any further. They could increase his contract by a few hundred thousand and change coach and use Neld some other way until his contract expires.

Hey Mark, bring the fun back

Jon Anderson IN an open letter to Mark Neeld, Herald Sun football writer Jon Anderson asks the Demons coach to bring some fun back.

Mark Neeld's best hope of keeping Melbourne job is winning back the players

Dear Mark,

Despite all the predictions of gloom surrounding your coaching it might just be a little brighter than most reckon. In fact winning six to seven games this season isn't out of the question.
But it won't happen unless you bring some fun back to the place. And it needs to happen now.
Since you walked into that club 20 months ago with both guns blazing you have adopted the my way or the highway approach. And clearly it hasn't worked.

They would have to increase Craig's pay, and still pay Neeld at the same time. Which they don't have the money to do.

Neeld will be stupid to quit, he won't get a payout. Imagine hoping to get fired at your job so you can get 600k rather then quitting and getting zero.

He wouldn't, because she is making it up. Stop wasting your brain power on it!

Someone (can't remember if it was Robbo or Mark McClure) was crapping on last night about how the Dees have failed for 20 years (they actually played finals in 2006 and a GF in 2000) and got it wrong hiring a rookie coach to change their culture etc. and that Neeld essentially had no pedigree etc. to become a senior coach.

While I am highly critical of Melbourne, isn't this what Hawthorn did with Clarkson? Richmond with Hardwick? St Kilda with Lyon? Essendon with Hird? Bulldogs with McCartney? Since Daniher left you could argue they've got just about everything wrong (drafting, development, coaching etc.) but I don't think the 'pick a young coach from a successful program' method was the wrong way to go about it, even if tweedledum and tweedledee picked the wrong guy(s).

what if craig is on more coin than neeld already?
Then that seems like a poor way of running a football club.

Almost every club goes with the Rookie coach strategy and hope for the best. the Scott brothers, The Golden trio, Clarkson, Mcartney, Dimma, Longmuire. Cheaper salaries I would think. But there are plenty of quality ex coaches out there that would probably serve Melbourne better.

Terry Wallace turned the also-ran Dogs into a top 4 side. He went to Richmond as an experienced coach and was a failure.

Malthouse has gone to Carlton, and while it's early days so far they don't look any better than they did under Ratten.

The less said about Blight at St Kilda the better...

Hiring an experienced coach is not a fool proof plan.

And to throw a rookie in is better? Bailey was a Rookie, Neeld was a rookie, They've tried Rookie coaches, I Think they must give someone with experience in the top job some thought.

He's entitled to defend his position at the club. They signed a contract with him - they have to honor that contract.

It was Alan Joyce that did that! Took them to their first consecutive finals series since their premiership year. Then Terry Wallace (an assistant at the time) decides to stab Joycey in the back by organising a players revolt, and during his coaching stint decides to reap the rewards for Joycey's hard work. And of course, when Wallet's awful list management decides to catch up with him, he decides to run off to Sydney. Terry's tenure at Richmond shows what kind of coach he really was, given that he had Danny Frawley laying the groundwork. And still he manages to leave Richmond in a worse off position than 2004.

The common element is Melbourne.

Whatever they fail at, someone else succeeds in doing. :(

Looking like the second 90+ loss in a row despite a marked improvement in effort from the players... I don't know what to make of this. Is it just a lack of skill, lack of execution or just a terrible game plan?
