I just saw this on YouTube, the legendary Brian Clough voicing his thoughts on the football media in 1980.

It just struck me how much of it applies here, on the other side of the world, 35 years later.

I'm pretty disaffected by the media and have found myself avoiding it almost completely now, and I imagine much of you are the same. STFU and let us relax with the game.

The worst thing I've found is their bullshit is now sneaking into matchday coverage. You can avoid the rubbish tabloid shows if you like, but the match should be sacrosanct.

There was a time when I would constantly be checking The Age and Sun sports pages, would religiously watch Footy Classified and The Sunday Footy Show. Now I boycott both papers and couldn't care less about ANY football related TV show.

Can't say I'm enjoying football that much anymore as it is, but I have realised that most 'news' is sensationalist crap designed to fill this ridiculous 24 hour news cycle that appears is our new norm.

Media has saturated the topic to the point of exhaustion. For every footballer there are now 3 media personalities.. crazy stuff.

Game has got some very big issues to face right now.. and heaven help us if they think Gil is the man to lead us forward.. he was a main architect of many of the problems plaguing the game.

Feel exactly the same. I still know whats going on and who players are, but I can't be stuffed reading articles anymore.

The media have saturated basically all aspects of footy to the point of exhaustion.

It's become an industry in its own right, and an incredibly self serving one that is predicated as much as anything around justifying its own bloated existence.

Ironically this spiel from Clough in the modern environment would get so much media it wouldn't be funny.
A dog like Barrett or Wilson would be so incensed that they were being addressed in this manner, they would lose their shit. Caro would throw the misogynist card in for extra leverage and outrage, refusing to simply acknowledge that many people view her as a dead set campaigner independently of her genitalia.

Oh the irony !

Hearing a lecture from Brian (Bungs) Clough. Actually the most interesting thing from that video was Clough discussing Trevor Francis. One of the earliest English players to play in Seria A for Sampdoria. A gifted player.
