Review The Pre-Season Report Thread (Requests, reports and much more!)

I was at training today for a short period of time and only got to see the lads doing a full length field training drill which was some sort of drill to get the ball out of the back line, and more or less using the avenues down the boundary, barely went through the guts.

- stand outs were Jones (used the ball well), Macdonald, Trengove and Howe drove the ball deep out of the half back flank very well, also thought Tynan and Taggert impressed with good aggressive intent on the footy. Troy Davis spoiled well, and looks a lot stronger and bigger

- Morton was terrible at it, got lots of the pill and butchered it terribly, couldn't hit a target, either got smothered or kicked it out of bounds with a dribbler (to my amusement) looked out of sorts

hopefully someone was there to fill in the rest!

Thanks for the write up. Seems we are going to truly model Collingwoods game plan playing contested footy on the wing. I hope Neeld knows what he is doing because we a are a light weight team to rely on a contested footy game plan ... But then again the running game plan didn't work for us with Bailey. At least it answers why Bate is training with the Midfeild group... Hopefully Sylvia is up for it too. Exciting time ahead.

We're a bit light, but not THAT light.

McKenzie, Jones, Sylvia, Beamer (Viney next season obviously), Bate, Tapscott, Trengove, Grimes

Got no queries whatsoever about those guys going in for the footy. Obviously we'd want to see more bulk from guys like Blease, Trengove, Gysberts but we aren't as slim as some are making us out to be.

Hell, there would be few teams that could outmuscle a midfield of Jones, Beamer and Sylvia. That's without even mentioning Stef Martin who has really shown a bit around the contest, as has Watts (not a big guy, but compared to most midfielders is still big). Jamar is one of the bigger rucks around too.

Where I think we have an advantage, potentially, is our mid-sized marking players. With Clarke, Watts, Trengove, Petterd, Sylvia, Jurrah, Green, Howe we really should be trying to exploit our more than decent ability to take grabs in the air. Contested marking in one on ones isn't our strength, but running grabs should be one of ours considering our personnel in the forward half.

If it means Green gets less kicks directed at him on the lead, I'll live with that. I'd much rather us taking the best option and trusting one of Sylvia, Howe, Clarke, Watts, Petterd, Trengove or Jurrah to take a grab. They're all usually at an advantage against similar sized opponents

Anyone care to have a ping as to how Melbourne will line up on the 25th @ Metricon Stadium?

No training tomorrow unfortunately; there's one at Casey Fields on Friday but I'm working.

I'll try to get down next week.

As for the lineup.

FB: Bartram Frawley Garland
B: Grimes Rivers Bennell
C: Nicholson Moloney Jones
F: Howe Watts Green
FF: Jurrah Clark Martin
R: Jamar Sylvia Trengove
Int: Gysberts Magner Petterd
S: Blease

I imagine that we'll get a lot of rotation through the cup.

I am very concerned about our forward line, very tall.

Is Davey injured or having a full pre-season?

No doubt it's tall, but Martin wouldn't be a permanent forward.

Not sold on Davey at the moment; plus I think playing the GC gives us a chance to try some things.

Not sure hes even training, almost no info on him from posters who have visited training & haven't seen one pic of him put up by the club.

Where is he??

Flash has been doing the majority of the training.
-He struggled in running drills but we all know he is not an endurance athlete.
-He has been training with the forward line group with a view to playing as a crumbing forward.
-His footskills are still elite judging by what I've seen in drills.
-His voice and committment at training have been excellent.
-Write him off at your own peril.

Aaron Davey: Aaron has had a slow start to the pre-season, due to an operation. He is progressing well and settling back into the main group. His skills are as good as ever. - Leigh Brown
Wonder what the operation was?

Re: MFC trying things, I would expect Bate to line up in the midfield.

Wonder what the operation was?

Broken leg of some sort. He went in to that St Kilda game with it. (We all know the one.) Flash didn't play for the rest of the season. The operation was why he was a bit slow getting into preseason, and low on fitness.

I don't. The second half of 2011 doesn't exist...

Thanks 39, the highlighted points are exactly what we want to see from him.

I wonder if it was related to the fracture he got against the hawks in late 2010. Maybe never recovered properly.

Obvious exception of Sylvia being suspended

I wouldn't be expecting such full-strength teams for the NAB Cup games... a lot of the kids will get a go, like they do every year.

Unless you were talking about Round 1, in which case, carry on.

bingo ;)

All I want to see in NAB Cup is our new players getting a run including trying out new positions (like Bate in midfield, Grimes in midfield) plus all the lads with injury interrupted preseasons... oh and Clark :D

Got there yesterday to see the last part of the session, a couple of observations are that Bate has really changed his body shape with his increased fitness level & don't be surprised if Garland is in the leadership group next year, he is as committed as they come & sets a great example for his team mates...

In the gut busting repeat sprints, the last men standing were; Jones & Garland, those with still plenty to catch up; Davey, Gysberts, Watts & Howe really struggled... Mind you it was
great to see Davey helping out Garland by volunteering to do some extra reps with Garland as he had burnt off the others in his group & got good encouragement to keep going from Davey...

Jones just kept getting faster as the session progressed & I reckon a running coach has spent a fair bit of time with him, as his action is very smooth & economical, now I just hope the coaches can get his disposal to the same level...
They have finally got the camera working after 7 weeks (located behind the goals yarra end), this will really help the coaches with their teaching of positional plays & their version of the press (whatever that is). A great initiative by the club...

Looks like I got one right for a change...

Hows the preseason of Jack Grimes been compared to his last few years? is he finally fit and what role will he play? Rebounding half back flank as usual or a midfield role with the loss of scully and Davey getting old. Not to mention you have loss some old generals the past few years in JMAC and Bruce.

Meanwhile, out in the Twitterverse ...

"Mike_Sheahan Mike Sheahan

Never mind missing out on leadership group. 2 senior Melb players (not Green) yet to prove worthy of a game. Coaching staff unimpressed."

Might need to revise that team sheet above. Davey and Rivers out anyone?
