Wakelin is the one that always sticks in my mind. He was basically never beaten (apart from by Neitz who seemed to do well on him) but never got near an AA guernsey. Champion fullback.

But an alcoholic bogan sacked from two previous clubs for misbehaviour who was the equivalent of folding chairs at a wedding in terms of importance to the big occasion claimed he slept with the lights on.

Anyone who doubts how good a defender Wakelin was just needs to look at how our defence has gone since he retired. We're still yet to find an adequate replacement for him.

Yeah, agreed. He's like a headless chook, runs like the wind, but is unsure of where he is going and often his surroundings. Makes critical errors each game due to being run down or suffering from Dangerfielditis (running so fast all kicking skill is out the window). Don't get me wrong, I would love a player like him at our club who took the game on like he does, but it's high risk high reward. What you would prefer is guys like Hurn, Fisher, Birchall, Suckling and Mackie who get the job done defensively (most of the time) and they take the game on, not by running in circles, but by pinpointing high risk/high reward passes time and time again and being calm under pressure.

gopower, I'm quite surprised at how much you like him as a footballer since, in my opinion, a hilarious Bay 13 thread that you made: "Open letter to Chris Yarran" applies perfectly to Atley. (Can't find the thread as the new BF search function won't find any posts made on the old system)

I didn't make the thread. Would've liked to take credit for it though, it's a quality thread. Yarran's not a bad player though, he's just nowhere near as good as Carlton supporters like to think he is. I'd take him over Jacobs in a microsecond.

Atley's disposal has been quite good in the games that I've seen, although admittedly I haven't watched North that often (and stopped watching today about halfway through the first quarter).
