How do you get your steps up?

I used to average around 50,000 steps a week just walking to work, down to 25,000 a week now that I've moved and catch the bus in.

I'll resume evening walks with the mrs and our mt lofty walks on Sundays. Never felt the urge to run clicks because of the Fitbit.

Don't be embarrassed! I'm about 3 weeks ahead of you. That's all.

My running also started with getting a fitbit. My social indoor cricket side folded a few months back and for the first time in 25 years I wasn't playing a sport. I'd also gotten to about 10kgs overweight.

The fitbit was a huge eye opener as to how little I was moving around.

I went away to the Essendon game having had the fitbit for about 3 days, and it had dawned on me that without at least walking the dog, I couldn't get near the 10,000 steps target. I have a Facebook chat with a couple of friends I went away with where we discuss step totals, what we've run that day etc. It definitely helps feeling like I have to be accountable to someone.

It seemed like a good time to run when I could to get steps up, and my competitiveness means that I've kept it up. I started from very little fitness base. I've got a good 5km track around my house, dead flat. I don't think I'd go too well with an incline. I finished the first time I tried which was a pleasant surprise, but it was glacially slow.

After about 10 5km runs in 14 days or something, I tried 2 laps, which I finished in about 1 hour 2 minutes, and after a day off managed 3 laps today! 14.72km in 1.31.29, which I'm super proud of. I'd never run further than 5km before, and 3 weeks ago the concept of running 10km would have been laughable.

My 10,000 daily steps streak is at 17 days. I have walked around the house for 20 minutes after 11pm to get there a few times. I've dropped a few kilos as well.

Nice! This encourages me. We'll be wearing the shit out of our PI's in no time.

My 4yo daughter is STILL obsessed with that show.
If I ever read somewhere that the theme song was used at Gitmo to interrogate would-be-terrorists, I would nod knowingly and with much sympathy for those poor souls.

Is there anything better than not having to break in a new pair of shoes?

Long story after my old asics having two sole transplants thought i would go to the Athletes Foot and get a proper pair of shoes fitted, turns out fitzi was wrong and the pair they gave me were about a size and a half too small, bought a pair of Dunlop KT26 on recommendation from a user here (sorry i cannot remember who) they were good shoes but have worn out too quickly, now i have bought another pair of Asics and are a perfect fit. :thumbsu:

Dunlop kt26's. I threaten miss feels dad with these every birthday he has. "Getting old, almost time to start buying velcro sneakers"

I'll legit do it one day. However its been about 7 years of threats so far.

What's the brand name worth on a pair of $200 sneakers? $150?

Nah you generally get what you pay for.

There is a huge difference in comfort, performance and durability between a fairly standard $160 Nikedas and $40 Williams Lynx cross trainers

Yup. I've got flat feet and wear some pretty aggressive orthotics - my knee joints get cut to shreds if I wear anything remotely cheap. My body knows when I've skimped on footwear.

Definitely 100% correct... I never got expensive shoes when i was in school. The most expensive shoes my parents bought me were cheap $20-$30 from either Kmart or Spend-Less-Shoes. My brother gave me a brand new pair of Asics and they were the best damned shoes i have ever had and i haven't looked back since other than buying the cheap KT26's.

Dead on. My mum used to buy me $30-$40 Lynx cross trainers that lasted about 4 months before they were destroyed. The Nikes I buy might be 4 times the price, but they last 4 times as long as well.

not sure what they do at asics but geez they must employ the best 8 year olds with the sturdiest hands because their shoes last so much longer than any others i have ever had. they never fall apart they just wear out, and retain their comfort. every other brand of shoe i try has fallen apart, bits fall off, holes develop, all within a year, but asics last me 5 times as long, not sure why or how, but thank you asics sweat shop kiddies, good job, i ask for you to get a raise but, well, you know....
