With that other Simpsons thread going, I just had a thought.

How big is the Simpsons really?

Most of us being Gen Y- we have grown up with the yellow family a constant fixture on our screens. I for one can't remember when I started watching it, it just seems to be there. My dad always joked that I've probably seen more of the Simpsons than I have of him. Which could possibly be true.

If you make a reference to the Simpsons in daily conversation, I'd wager that 8 out of ten people would immediately know what you are saying and where you took the quote from.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Where do you rate the Simpsons in terms of things that have made an impact on society? I'd almost go as far as saying the Simpsons have been one of the biggest influences on modern society and culture, not just on TV but across all media.

it's the single greatest pop culture phenomenom in history IMO.

I think it's amazing- TV shows come and go but this one cartoon, simple as it is, has shaped so much of our culture.

Big enough that I have never seen an episode in my life, yet I can name some characters.

Simpsons >>>>>>>> daylight >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the rest.

easily.

its the best show ever and where i get all my quotes from. never lets me down

I love it but I never feel the need to quote it in my daily conversations.

Love it...

Would watch religiously and will still watch it now if it's on. Not as funny as it used to be but has its moments.

In terms of pop culture relevance it's on about a par with Seinfeld. Those two are far and away ahead of the rest.

The epicness of seasons 1-7/8/9 is matched equally to the shitness of seasons 10-20+.

I hate this argument.

Season 1 and 2 are shit. Seasons 19 and 20 are great. Not sure about 21 and 22 because I havent seen them all, but from season 19 on (the 'classic era' crew came back) it's a definite return to form.

I exaggerated that part. Still, when I make a joke in conversation it is often a simpsons reference, and people get it right away.

yeah, that's likely not true. :thumbsu:

Simply a phenomenon. Regardless of how good or shit people think it is, or whether it got crap (which it definitely did), or when, the impact it has had on society has been immense. It single handedly paved the way for animated comedies centering on dysfunctional families, with hundreds of attempts to copy it reaching various degrees of success, but never quite matching it.

A cultural behemoth.

Ha it wasn't really directed at you. There once was a thread on Media & Entertainment that came close to 1000 posts, titled 'Simpsons references in Daily Conversations' or something.

EDIT: May have been closer to 400 posts.

I remember when Dinosaurs came out and trumpeted itself as the "Simpsons Killer".

When new shows are coming out and claiming to be the slayer of another show, it shows the other show is damn huge :thumbsu:

Also, some of season 2 was quite good, though most of seasons 1 and 2 were much less funny than the decade that proceeded them.

Not the momma!

I'll usually watch 5 or 6 random episodes a week, and am watching one now.:) I've seen some episodes well over 10 times, but still laugh at them now.
