How many of our players do you think would find a position in Hawthorns' team. I choose Hawthorn because they are rated 2. I can think of only 2. Brad Green and Aaron Davey which indicates the huge task that confronts us.

Really, this sort of exercise is futile in determining a player's/club's worth. There are too many variables to consider in deciding upon whether a player would slot in or not.

Imagine Bruce, for example, playing for Hawthorn. He would run around, making space, snagging 4 a game.

Its just such a difficult thing to compare.

Others that would be consider

Garland, Martin or Warnock as one the backs
Whelan but I think he play alot like brown rather than Guerra so you would think he wouldn't get a game
Wheatley could maybe come in for Murphy or Guerra
Rivers would get a game but he is so injury prone at the moment you can't actually rate him
Moloney would come close but they have some hard players


6 would (obviously some are injuried) and 4 others maybe... It is easy to look good in a great team(look at WC) but these players would get a game and the others would be on teams balance etc.

It is difficult to look at these situation because it would give the hawks over 80 players to choose from and two salary caps so all those players wouldn't be there

McLean, White (he would be in for one those two surely, just as relief), Rivers (if fit) Davey, Robertson. I would say Bate but i struggle to see his role with Buddy there.

Not that it matters. How many Hawthorn players 3 or 4 years ago would have got a run with Melbourne. Not many 5 maybe

True, I rate Davey.

He would play a similar role to Rioli and its hard to split them taking into accoutn Rioli's longer term potential.

Davey would likely displace Rioli at present on ability, even though Davey has had a down year this year.

Edit: Having said that Rioli has done a good job for mark of the year and goal of the year.

Agreed about Rioli... didn't really rate him until watching him against the Cats he was very good.... Davey would kill him though the only problem is davey is playing for Melbourne so they want him up the ground in the midfield etc etc if he was allowed to stay in the fwd line like Rioli can. Although Rioli will be a great player for the Hawks

Do you really think that? I reckon the hawks defence is very good, they are just short a second quality tall option and Gilham fills in pretty well. Rivers would be in their team to replace Murphy but Croad, Brown and one other tall would be plenty in most games. Gilham would be contesting very closely with Garland and Warnock and into the future Martin.

I didn't trash Bate. The posts are designed to show supporters wearing rose coloured glasses the difficulties we face in challenging for a flag. If you want to continue to accept mediocrity go right ahead. At the moment the performances of most of our young players who have been at the club for 3-4 years have been mediocre. viz Bate Sylvia Dunn Jones Bartram Bell. If you want to build a club around that fine. Have a look at the contenders. They have stars. Who are our stars. Do you think Bate will be a star. Another good ordinary footballer. The problem in the past has been an overating of the list. i don't want that to continue. Do you think hanging on to Yze,White, Robbo etc was prudent or on looking back would trading them have put us in a better position listwise. The same applies now. Who do you honestly believe will be a star.

Yeah, you're right on this one. This is light entertainment as opposed to anything of substance.

In saying that, you raise some interesting points in your last post Barrie. As a fan of a particular club, it can be easy to lose sight of reality and paint a better picture than the actuality.

The White, Robbo etc. talk may have some merit, but its all behind the club now. I suppose your point is to try to learn from these situations, but it is always difficult for a club to off-load loyal servants and strong contributors.

I also think Bate could be better than a good ordinary footballer as you put it, he has a number of attributes that are very impressive, and still has a lot of time to develop them.

In addition, Hawthorn enjoyed a long line of high picks when the system was still skewed badly. Melbourne has not endured that kind of sustained run of poor performance, hence the chance to find a star has been somewhat minimised. We have our chance this year though, in a deep draft with a number of top prospects, we could really enhance our future.
