The spine. The key barometer for any aspiring football side worth its salt.

The question is, can it get any better than that at this very moment and into season 2005?

To my mind even if Neil gets a Lego Technics set for Christmas he'd still struggle to build anything as snazzy as the above creation...

Thoughts?

I dont rekon that is strong enough to beat most of the top sides. Not many there that can pull off a big mark regulary.

I like the key defensive positions;). Honestly our backline has great potential and if we can stay injury free there I think we could be one of the best backlines next year. Kenny, Truck, Bassett, Hart, Torney and Begley would we awsome back 6.

Midfield will still be a bit thin but if we can push Reilly and Johncock in there with some success we will be reaosnable. Again if we have a good run with injuries.

Now forward line will be intreresting. I still reckon Sarge will be around next year and will be our CHF. If Hentschel can beef up I think he can hold down FF and if he continues his rate of improvement he could be a 50 goal player from FF next year.

So I will say that this is probably the best we can come up next year:

FF: Trent Hentschel
CHF: Ian Perrie
C: Mark Ricciuto
CHB: Ken McGregor
FB: Ben Rutten

Er...Burton...kinda does it all the time in the forward line?

McGregor? Most consistent CHB in the competition?

Sorry - not a Burton fan - Squelshy must be our FF until we recruit or grow something else. Burton is an oxymoron in himself. His greatest strength is his endurance and so should play in the midfield somewhere - but his disposal is crap so he should be hidden close to goal so he cant f*** up disposals - catch22 !!! My concern is that if we put him at FF he will just keep going for the hangers all the time - at least Squelshy is a lightning lead. Others get my tick - I'm starting to favour the more modern 2 prong CHF approach. Rutten is the closest thing we've ever had to a FB and Kenny is the reincarnation of Peter Caveman - so I'm happy other than Birdman

Burton kicked 50+ from FF in 2002:confused:

He has kicked more goals in one season that Welsh has

Stifler... whisper it quietly, especially around some of the present company on these boards, but I reckon Trentschel - with a serious preseason or two of sensible bulking up under his belt - could possibly fill a Tredrea-esque dual-role of CHF/FF for us.

Chad Cornes = All Australian CHB

Easily.

Had McPharlin stayed fit for the duration I would've had him in the position however, with Studley on a flank. It will be interesting to see how the Chad backs up next season with the experience under his belt - certainly an extraordinary first-up tilt as a 'permanent' back by him though.

Scary thing is, he can only improve.

Agree with this set-up Stiffy, with Welshy also playing across FF with Trent.

Citizen Kane... you take my tipping pole position and now you spurn my tactical advances...

... 2004. the year my heart broke. ;)

Actually, Truck, Kenny, Sarge & Trent give us 4 KPP who all have good hands ... which is just as well, as our ruckmen don't.

Trent has a long way to go until he could hold a position which requires as much strength and endurance as that, but he's slowly and surely climbing up the ranks, which is a great positive for us.

I agree with Stiffy's spine. However I believe Scotty Welsh has been very serviceable in the second half of this year as a pure leading FF. In time perhaps Welsh will move into a forward pocket with Trent taking FF.

I've argued this before but I personally consider the ruck to be part of the spine of a team, more so than a centreman.
And that is Still a problem for us, even though I reckon Huddo will be next years biggest improver.
