The Suns have set on Dew

Who are his assistants? They need to carry some of that burden.

I agree, Dew has steadied the ship off-field and imo the suns are now a respected opponent even though they have ups and downs like any middle of the ladder team. They were a certified joke prior to Dew taking over.
One of Dews flaws is that he is threatened by good assistants. He is actually pretty insecure about assistant coaches getting more respect than him - that's why he got rid of Dean Solomon

Maybe they'll have to have a bye every week or they'll add another team not long afterwards

Participation on the Gold Coast is going damn well and their crowds have held up half decent for a team that has been s**t their entire existence.
Both the the Giants and GC are there to grow the game
The Afl doesn't just give up on expansion like that, otherwise We'd have no Brisbane or Sydney in the AFL cos they largely struggled for the first 10-15 years.

I'm always gonna call out other supporters suggesting that other teams (never their own club of coursw) should fold. It's shithouse

Correct.

expansion clubs are 20 year + investments and are about much more than just wins/losses.

yeah. Kinda sucks for Dew

they’re going to load up on genuinely elite kids this year and the next coach is going to look like a genius
You are forgetting the genuine elite kids that Dew has had drafted at the club in his time.

King
Lukosius
Rankine
Rowell
Anderson

Don't think another 3 was going to make a difference with Dew there

Correct, I don't think the topic has come up at AFL HQ, only amongst supporters of other struggling clubs looking to draw attention away from their own uselessness.
Hmm okay. I thought it was a universally accepted that Gold Coast moving to Tasmania was a topic of discussion myself. Im not shit canning them because they are down. I truly believe its a good chance of happening is all

Gold Coasts problems are far more serious than the on field team.

Hardwick certainly is a good coach, but he is going to fix the suns issues soon? no.
I’m not aware of their issues tbh. All I know of is their on-field issues in making finals.

The way I see it, things can change rapidly. Essendon is an example of this IMO. They were a shamble off the field during the supplements saga and at the end of last year. Provided they make finals this year, they’d have made finals the year after being a shamble with some off-field changes. Same thing happened after the suspensions.

Essendon made it because their list is decent. That’s how I see Gold Coast right now. Hardwick knows what he and Richmond did to get our players mentally strong enough for the season. I think he’ll be able to do the same for them and get them to finals within two seasons.

Well at least that’s my opinion on the matter. Hardwick will have some input into the list decisions as well, so we may stop seeing them stuff up so badly in trading/drafting.

The cynic in me is wondering if the timing is by design as most teams have a little boost around coach departures and interim replacements.

2 weeks ago they were 7-7 and in contention for finals (hence the public rhetoric of "full support of the Board"). 2 bad losses and it looks in jeopardy again so make the announcement now in the hope it ellicits the extra 10% to get some wins that might sneak them in.

(Remembering, that this is from the perspective that Caro's mail was correct and they were intending to move on from Dew regardless and the above circumstances simply dictated the timing of the announcement).

If it is by design then it says a lot about the unfilled potential of the playing group.

Im not necessarily against the decision by the timing is poor to say the least. Their list management has been just as bad and should cop the same consequence.

It's zero chance of happening, Tasmania will be the 19th side, followed by a new 20th side.

GC never recovered from knifing McKenna for Rodney Eade(lol).

McKenna was on track to make finals and 'supercoach' Eade just ruined them.
Fairly superficial take.

McKenna might have been "on track" on the surface, but the cultural issues in the team were immense. He had to go, and it's not surprising he hasn't landed a big gig since. They were getting by mostly on talent and the unbelievable play from Ablett more than anything Bluey was doing. "Give the ball to Gary" seemed to be the only instruction. Eade was never a supercoach, though was absolutely the wrong choice.

I wonder if Robbo will be giving an unequivocal apology today on 360...

He will be drunk as usual , apology unlikely journos on the AFL gravy train are never wrong

I don't think there are that many issues right now tbh. It's just on field. Players are signing up in record numbers for the GC, they have new facilities right next to the stadium, There's not really been many internal leaks to the media until very recently, and clearly we can now see why. Overall the culture seems quite good. Dew was part of that, no doubt, but couldn't translate it to onfield success.

I don't think they are that far away and I think that's why they've done this. Dew had 6 years and essentially in each of the last 2 or 3 they've had several times looking like they were finally arriving only to flop under any expectation.

Their list management has been atrocious since their inception.
It was always going to be downhill from the start when they first appointed Scott Clayton way back when.

Yeah, as much as I think Dew's time had come, you have to feel for him when there were so many poor list decisions.

You can't hide behind the "not a destination club" bullshit either, because there's no reason the Suns couldn't be a destination club. You can't tell me that when you put the Gold Coast and Geelong side by side every single bloke under 30 wouldn't pick the Gold Coast.

Not the first time she's broken a story, been slammed from all parts, then proven right. Must be satisfying.
Well when she has gone for him for a few years now she was going to get it right once I guess

thats not the decision these players are making though

400k / year at gold coast

OR

200k / year + $1 acreage packages and free surf coast pubs at geelong

I know what you mean. Geelong kids often dream about playing in front of 12,000 mostly opposition fans at home games. Every footy player under 30 would jump at that I'm sure.
