That is just taking one stat and using it as a deciding point. Auckland has the major NZ cities and Melbourne a similar distance to Sydney away. Honolulu has the 2 other main islands (pop 100K + cities) and then its Southern California as far away as Adelaide is from here.

There are no other cities at all close to Perth. Nothing. Bunbury at 70K is the only population centre of note. Then its is Adelaide. And nothing.

There would be less population within 3 hrs flying time from Perth than any other city in the world.

Honolulu to LA is nearly double the distance perth to Adelaide.

sure, but "the most remote capital city in the world" doesn't exactly set any of your arbitrary parameters either.

fyi, the nearest mainland airport to Honolulu is San Fran at 3855km
almost twice the distance of Perth to Adelaide, and at least 200km further than Perth to anywhere else in Australia

I can understand the attraction to Melbourne, its an amazing city, always buzzing - attractive spot for all the hipster pseudo footballers types who like to be seen out and about etc. Perth, even though it's changing, has never been on the same level as Melbourne and probably never will be.

However, having football training in the cold weather?! Surely you'd have to get sick of that.
Over the last few years how many Vics have we lost back to Melbourne, once they are here they love the place. ( and yes I have been all over Oz and many other places ). Perth has many great things going for it, but if your friends and relations are not here why would you leave Melbourne

nitpicking here, but this is actually a myth.
if you're talking about proximity to the nearest major city (500,000+) Honolulu (population 950,000) is easily more remote.
then next in line is Auckland (2155km from Sydney) narrowly pipping Perth (2131 km to Adelaide)

Good. I'm glad to hear it. For some reason it's always bugged me that I live in the most isolated capital on the planet. Now I know that it's not true I feel better about it. Strange but true.

But as far as being a 'major' city we are probably most isolated.

Auckland is not that far from Wellington - another 'major' city, so whichever way you want to fry an egg, we're still a fricken long way from anywhere...

i think the real kick in the guts is that our nearest major city is Adelaide

We are "the most remote continental capital city in the world". Surely that matters?

We are also the furthest place on Earth from the Bermuda Triangle. So at least we're safe from that.

How can you forget Matthew Pavlich?

He is unforgettable. How could you suggest I forget him???

We have a great record at retaining non-WA players we draft - once they get here they love it and are happy to stay. But for whatever reason, lately Port particularly have had a good record in getting SA boys to 'come home' and play for them, and they have all added something - Hombsch, Monfries, Polec... they've even got a bloody WA boy in Ryder choosing them over coming back here.

Still think we should have got our indigenous brothers (present and past) to get together with him (Ryder) and tell him how good Freo is. That's apparently what swayed him to go to Port, a yarn with Pickett, Neade and Wingard about how inclusive the Port Adelaide culture is for its indigenous players. Stuffed that one up by the looks of it.

Clarke is two years younger than Ryder and about 5cm taller. I don't think young Zac has peaked yet. The more I think about it, the less I'm inclined to move Zac on, I think with a full preseason we'll see some amazing form.
If we rotated the rucks between Sandi, Clarke, Hannath, or Griffin, like we will rest Mcpharlin for some games, would keep
all of them on their toes.
I would like to see at least one ruck moved on, for a second or third round pick, Apeness ia a forward/ruck option.

They have never played finals and don't even have a coach yet they can still snag an All Australian!!

I'm sure it is the 3 year deal that got it done. Not to mention Gold Coast would be a pretty nice place to retire.

Yeah, I'd say the 3 years would have been a pretty big carrot, I reckon a lot of clubs would have stalled at that - but don't discount the good old $$$$. For at least one of those years, GC do have an extra $400k to play with remember as part of their expansion allowance.

Malceski would have been on unders in Sydney. Didn't want to finish without be adequately compensated. Off to Gold Coast for the Golden Handshake.

We have a great recent record for retention of our imports but they have to come here when we draft them. After a couple of years of making friends, getting to like the pace of things and developing a sense of loyalty to the club they are happy to stay but as has been pointed out by others, when the world is their oyster and they can just move across town and probably not even move house its a whole other story.

Yeah, though I don't think he'll be up there just for the sun and surf. He's a consummate professional player and I think he'll do a lot of good for them.

Though he's on the older side, he's still playing top shelf footy, he's not particularly injury prone so there's nothing to say he's not got at least 2 good years in him, the third is a risk, but for GC, it's not a big one. Great pick-up for them.

With GAblett back to his "best of the best" form, another 1 more year maturity into their young guns. Now with a seasoned player with all that finals experience coming in to give them run and control off the back-line. They get the right coach and look out rest of the league.

Agree he will be good for them, but he is 30 and has done his knee 2-3 times.
