For those old enough to remember, the AFL actually used this measurement for determining the ladder in 1991. They called it "Match Ratio". They have never officially gone back to it, even though they use it in almost all American sport.

I remember it. It was the reason I hated staggered byes.
 
I actually like it. Just a personal thing; the accuracy of it. That's the whole point of a ladder - to determine accurately where teams stand at all times.

No point with even numbers of teams. When we had 15 teams it was necessary. People can work it out for themselves.

It doesn't determine the strength of teams played vs those remaining so accuracy is in the eye of the beholder anyway.
