Pittonet is very underrated. Once he gets consistent games under him he comes good. Staying on the park is key for him

DeKoning has been in the system since 2017, is about to turn 24 and has played just shy of 50 games. I've seen enough to believe that he won't make it in the AFL as a #1 ruckman.

Needs to reinvent himself as a 3rd tall foward that does some occasional backup ruckwork. Will likely get the rest of the year in the VFL to prove he is capable. Prior experiments playing him forward have been a disaster.

I think a late first would get it done, but can also understand people saying early second. His value is pretty hard to nail down.

If he is average this year he will be average for the length of his career.
Only a handful of players have been average for their first 6 years then taken off.
Sure he can still fill a hole or be a role player but it’s a fair chance that’s his ceiling.
Going rate for those types is a second rd pick onwards depending on need, capital and the rest.

The casual TDK observer gets enamoured by the highlights package and physical attributes, but I see another name added to the list of phyically gifted big men who don't make the most of their ability. No doubt he will get plenty of chances, starting in the forward line in Carlton's VFL team, and then likely at another club in 2024 in every position possible.

The reality is that TDK cannot get a game at Carlton ahead of Marc Pittonet or Jack Silvagni. Just let that sink in for a moment.

I expect the deal has already been done. If not TDK's manager is a fool and has cost his client a fortune.

I was going to make a counter arugment about rucks taking way longer to develop.. BUT then I looked at career stats of a few other #1 ruckman in the league.

Tim English took 5 years in the AFL system to put it together and start playing consistently good footy.

Jarrod Witts and Sean Darcy took 4 years.

Todd Goldstein and Reilly O'Brien took 3 years.

Rowan Marshall, Max Gawn, Brodie Grundy took 2 years.

Tom DeKoning is currently in his 5th year. All this tells me is that if the penny hasn't dropped by now it probably won't.

His value will not diminish regardless of whether he plays senior footy again this year or not, you don't lose ability or potential because you are in the VFL. Besides, the only reason people are suggesting otherwise is because they hope their club can pick him up for a packet of peanuts.

Let's get it out there now, a handful of clubs will come for him AND they will be offering him a big salary too (whether he is worth that sort of silly money is a completely seperate discussion). Therefore, if an opposition club wants to offer him say ...... five years starting at $800K per annum then the trade price is two first rounders and that is just the opening gambit.

The bigger the paypacket offered, the bigger the trade price and anyone thinking differently has no idea at all.

His value is 100% dropping, becuase without a doubt teams will be dropping out of the race for him after realising that hes not actually very good.

Even at 800k per year, no club would ever ever ever give up 2 first rounders for him. That is absolutely ridiculous!
