More variables at play than simply 1 v 1. Last I checked it was a team sport so a 550k pay difference matters.

Not to North it doesn't. They have heaps of cap space to spend, thus North offering large deals to players.

They don't want pea heart back flippers like Gaff anyway.

They want hard nosed, head over the ball, loyal one club men like Polec. I mean he looks like Mr G from Summer Heights High FFS.

Anyway, Hickey... yay? Pick 39 and some 4th round pick swaps isn't the worst deal in the world. He's no start (nor is Vardy, nor was Lycett) but St Kilda weren't about to delist him.

Extra cap space doesn't give you more players on the field. Gaff is better but not 550k better, maybe 100k. The difference was more as he was a free agent. That money can be used to improve another area of the field.

Wins all round. Except west coast whom now have hickey as a starting ruck...

Gaff is only $100k better than Polec but you offered him $550k more. Great stuff.

Hickey is no star but your ruck is 31 next year and you are going to trade your back up for Melbourne's 7th? 8th? best midfielder.

Quit while you are a long way behind.
Free agent vs. Contracted. Tough to comprehend I know.

Goldie will play for longer than Hickey - that's a fact. We never have ruck issues and can use Daw or Xerri if needed. Not to mention any one of our mobile talls (Brown, McKay, Durdin) whom would all offer more than Hickey around the ground.

With Naitanui injured and Lycetts departure West Coast couldn't afford to stuff around and desperately needed a ruck man and got a ready made, even if only a B grader. As we have seen with many ruck man at new clubs he could improve to fill the gap for a year, Just like Lycett did this year and showed in the GF against the best ruck man in the league

In: Pick 20, pick 60, Saints' fourth rounder next year
Out: Pick 39, Eagles fourth rounder next year.

Tips it in our favour.

You needed a ready made ruckman to partner Vardy until NicNat gets back. You got one.

The picks don't really matter unless you are going to pick another ruckman with one of them.

So you pay a $450k premium per free agent huh? Good thing you have that war chest. We have 5-10 premiership players getting paid less than $450k.

Ah yes, who could forget the young up and coming Daw who is the same age as Hickey and a terrible ruckman, and the noted ruckmen Durdin, McKay and Xerri. If Ben Brown is playing as your #1 ruck you will challenge Carlton and Gold Coast.

They strengthen our draft hand which was looking pretty thin coming into the trade period.

Reminds me of when we brought Jon Giles in. Not the greatest of players, but will be serviceable and is good insurance to have. Good move by the Eagles.

Who said Daw was up and coming? Guess you missed the games he played down back this year. 2nd to McGovern in terms of stifling oppositions attacks.

The point is North don't play with 2 rucks. Goldy is good enough to carry the load. Worst case scenario we still have options and all of those options are still better than Hickey.

Daw's defensive prowess is wonderful but not relevant to your ruck stocks. Brown is an excellent key forward, but then so is Kennedy. Should we have held off on Hickey and just gone full Wallsy?

The point is that Goldstein is your only decent ruck and is 31 next year. You are looking to trade out your only back up for yet another mediocre mid 20s midfielder.

As Hickey's new #1 fan as of about an hour ago having heard we acquired him I'll back him to a better job for us than a collection of names you cobbled together.

Durdin 9 games, 4 hitouts
McKay 1 game, 3 hitouts
Xerri 0 games

Hickey 2018 13 games, 14 touche, 24 hitouts, 4.5 clearances a game. He'll do.
