Hawkins right to go for pre-season cup semi-final

GEELONG has laid to rest any lingering doubt about the fitness of Tom Hawkins by declaring him a certain starter for next Saturday night's NAB Cup semi-final

very good news....hope he can do enough to sure up a spot and get some pressure on Longers as that 2nd tall.

Smart move after Roughead monstered Carlton's defenders yesterday on the way to kicking six. The Tomahawk is more likely to do that than Lonners. I just hope he just goes back and has a shot rather than trying to pass it off, like he did a lot last season.

Nowhere in the article were there quotes saying he'll play in the NAB game. The same quotes,by Ken Hinkley, were in yesterdays paper and it said "He'll play saturday".The VFL are also playing saturday at SS.

Thompson mentioned last week he will play two NAB Cup / practice matches in the AFL and then it depends how he goes to whether he plays Round 1. (AFL or VFL)

Having said that though, it is strange the article isn't on the website, yet the articles about Mumford and the draftees are.

I would think if he was going to play at all, he would play in the AFL not VFL.
They can manage his minutes just as effectively in a NAB Cup game and it puts him at the highest level to see where he's at. And gives Lonergan a break.
Either way...he'll play when he's ready and not before!
I saw an interview with Bomber where he said they don't expect him to dominate his position in the AFL for another season or two. That is entirely realistic IMO. He ticks all the right boxes...size, athleticism, skill, football nous and most importantly...desire.
The final ingredient will be confidence and Bomber has a fantastic record of bringing elite players to fruition gradually...see Ablett and Bartel.

but it's not a quote,it could just be the Addy getting it wrong and guessing and not realising the VFL also play saturday. The same quotes, minus the "He'll play saturday",were in yesterdays Sunday Hun.

I'll believe it when I see it ...and when I see him demonstrate that he's not affected.

I remember only too clearly how the club strung us along for the first 1/2 of last season re: Otten's foot.

Given Hawkins can be subbed on or off - if he is not injured - it would be great to see him play some game time against Carlton. There is little doubt if he can make steady progress over the year he could become the second tall forward.

I can understand Geelong supporters wanting to see him out there on the park. I am sure many of us want to put last year behind us and see what the present and future holds for season 09. Many of supporters think they can judge 'raw talent' when we see it. Its all part of the pre-season routine for many avid Cat fans.

If by "raw talent", you mean being able to tell whether one guy can mark overhead and one can't, yeah you bet I think I can see it.

I find it hard to say I have seen enough to be totally confident that he will be there at the pointy end of the season - but I will say from what I have seen - I see 'raw talent' in the lad too.

Given Egan's situation any foot injury would surely put Geelong's coaches in a very conservative mindset re him playing too early this year. We may have to wait a little longer yet to see his talents on display, unfortunately. He really did not have a full season of football last year - and that might also contribute to him 'coming on' a bit more slowly than Geelong supporters would hope this season.
