It's actually incompetent.

Imagine our list with Kelly and Pickett on it yet we went both Gorter and Burrows.
We missed and passed on both in the Rookie Drafts....... numerous times.

I've said it before O'Brien and his cronies have a "certain type" of player, that the go for and whilst in the main its been successful, their aversion for proven, consistent WAFL player who play in a position of need has been IMO a Real Concern.

It pains me, to think we may well be ponying up two first rounders for Kelly and then having the opportunity to get " his poor mans alternative " Pickett the last two rookie drafts.:(

We do some things exceptionally well as a Club, but we also have some alarming drafting misses from right under our noses in the WAFL.

It could be worse. Our type might be the soft, white bread nothing type private schoolboy footballer that ends up at Melbourne. Happy with our type, but we miss a few every now and then for sure

"Look I think it was more important that we keep McInnes for his 15th year of backup to the backup 3rd reserve ruckman and get Josh Smith for a year or two of completely mediocre seagulling WAFL games instead of drafting a Pickett type. If you look back at our draft history we haven't really missed any. Hindsight etc etc " - Bond & co.
Felt like we kept Fmac around just so he can be a leader for our reserves team in their debut season. Huge waste of a spot if that was actually true given that we could've drafted Pickett instead, but who am I kidding, we'd probably have picked up some obscure player that would only spend 1 season on our rookie list.

Pickett was a hbfer i thought up until a year or 2 ago when he moved into the midfield

Very different levels of quality but I would like to see Watson forced into an on ball role to see how he goes. He’s hard enough and has good evasiveness and run, which we lack in the middle at times.

It does seem odd that he hasnt been played there despite us having a cole, nelson and rotham all hanging around the backline

Our biggest issue this year was the loose ball gets . The other contested ball measure next to hard ball gets (clearances).

Ranked 18 for loose ball gets .

Need to get the boys hunting the ball again like 2018 .

I like this because I think Watson’s disposal is far too hot and cold to play in the backline.

I like this idea.
Can see some similarities in the way they lope around the field. So maybe we did get a Kelly/Pickett type early in Watson.

What would Watson be like if left in the WAFL til 26.
Likely at peak by that age and prime for a mid season draft coup by someone.
Well, we got in years earlier. (Hopefully)

So who are the mature WAFL blokes under our nose that we should draft this season?

Not just ranked 18th but also way way behind GC who was 17th

So who are the untried guns at WAFL level that can go through the midfield? Not talking about Kane Mitchell, Horsley or Bolton. I’m talking the next Pickett or Kelly who haven’t previously been on an AFL list.

Honestly can’t think of any standouts from the few WAFL games that were telecast this year that fit the untested criteria.

EDIT - what liam123 said above. Sorry, didn’t see your post before I posted the above

Everyone getting excited about Pickett's performance like we missed a star.

Maybe just temper that with the fact that gws had as much pressure on Richmond in that grand final as all our grandmother's could have done.

He's not been drafted for many years for a reason.

It wasn't a monumental "miss" by our club nor the other 16 clubs.

I’m more excited by his WAFL performances for years than his work yesterday. He’s a really good player.

I’m biased but I don’t see why Cody Leggett doesn’t get spoken about more. Big bodied mid with a huge thumping kick.

Michael Sinclair a little bit older but a very good back flanker who could play at a higher level.

Disturbing thing about Tiges win yesterday is 3 X Ex GC Suns players picking up medallions (Prestia, Caddy and Lynch) makes the 'go home' factor even more attractive to current Suns players. Moreso Prestia and Caddy got no 2.

After thought comment - Player retention at GC just got a whole lot harder.

Really?

He showed more in one game than most of our HBF's TBH.
You think Nelson would've played that well yesterday?

"Not drafted for a reason"?

You mean like Tim Kelly?

We had Kelly on our draft list in 2017. As it turns out, Geelong got to him first, and we ended up with Brander, Allen and Ryan. That's an awesome draft for us.

In all possibility, in 6 months time, all 4 including Kelly will be at West Coast.

In terms of Pickett, he was never going to be an Eagle. It is necessary for the club to be risk averse in their player selection. It just is what it is.

It is a great story for Marlion, and the game.
Why is it necessary for us and it doesn't seem to be necessary for the reigning premiers with Pickett and Stack?
