Agree, never said it did.

To be honest, I am losing interest in Kelly given what he is going to cost us at the trade table. Cogs has to be the primary target. The fact we dont have to pay anything trade wise is the cherry on top. He is also so much cleaner, better skilled and defensive minded, which is rare for a quality mid. I'd be willing to overpay to get him because that sort of player is rare. If it means we lose a fringe player(s) on 300k then so be it (like Tigers did to get Lynch).

This the barrow I've been pushing for a while. It all hinges on the actual contract and potential trade vs what delusional fans on the internet think. $7-800k a season and two first round picks for Kelly? **** that. As the hype grows the gap in potential outlay between Kelly and Coniglio shrinks, and Coniglio is a much better player with a much bigger sample size. Kelly was tagged once and got 9 touches. Coniglio is tagged regularly and has had sub 10 disposals 3 times in 124 games, each time when coming on as a sub and the last time in 2015.

Sounds like the ideal solution to our HFF woes.

Unfortunately the Claremont indigenous boy in Liam Henry is a Freo NGA member and he is super silky. Really undersized but has some tricks.

Sounds like the ideal solution to our HFF woes.

The solution to our HFF woes is the return of Willie Rioli and Cripps extracting the digit.

Our forward line last week produced the least productive collective effort you are likely to see. Geelong's worst forward was better than our best.

Grian Myers had 20 touches and kicked 2 goals. Cripps had 7, Petruccelle had 6 and kicked 1. That's work rate.

Didnt help that the ball was hardly in our front half at all .

Kennendy on a bad day can still kick 3 goals without you noticing . He also draws the best defender .
Flags come around very seldom .
Im happy to keep JK for another year to have a crack at another .

Maybe JK should go out on top , we have done ok without him and I think it changes the dynamics of the fwdline ..
Kennedy has been a champion for us and he may still contribute next year but I’m just thinking bigger picture going fwd into the future ..

Sharp is my main hope. I saw him at the WAFL level against Claremont and he was one of the better Sharks.

I see him as a 10 to 20 range pick which feels like he may be there for our pick.

I would be ok going Jackdon with Sydney’s pick provided we address the need for 2 genuine mids that can play inside with our first and second picks or if we trade and get a genuine mid

If within the next two years, i can see the club persuading bunga to retire just short of 300 so Rotham could get a regular gig.

Hope we don't and Bunga becomes the our first 300 gamer.

Also very interesting that the 2 300 gamers for Freo and Bunga are all non West Aussies.

Could Jack Darling be the first 300 gamer for a WA club that hails from WA?

With the new kick in rules guys like bunga and jetta are worth so much more . You can launch quick deep attack from the defensive goal square .
Only when they become a defensive liability or their bodies arent holding up anymore should they retire.

Jetta may be getting to that point .

Hurn on the other hand is still good defensively and durable.

Rotham will be happy to wait . I also see him more of a sheppard type player using his run and playing third tall role rather than designated kicker .

It would be great to pick up jeremy sharp in the draft as a hurn replacment

Sarcasm. It's still annoying we didn't take him. I think he's well above ALL of our selections.
Debatable that he would’ve had the same impact if he stayed in WA. Must have been some pretty bad offield stuff if every club passed on him in both drafts. Is still disappointing seeing guys like him and Kelly tear it up early in their career when we should’ve been all over them. We tend to wait for confirmation before paying up for players rather than try and pick a bargain. Case in point Ryan and Kelly. Don’t really mind how it’s turned out really (we won a bloody flag with our list management) but when you think we were tracking both of them the year earlier and could’ve had them as rookies + whoever else we wanted with the picks used to get them later on (26 for Ryan and whatever we give up for Kelly this year). It’s not the absolute worst list management but there’s not a lot of risks taken and it’s frustrating when those same risks work out for opposition, especially when there’s people on here picking these players years earlier.

Anybody could kick the ball out from fullback landing it on the half back flank every single time to a pack. No point having Hurn and Jetta unless they're going to keep the opposition guessing and attack at least a few times a game. Can not remember the last time we scored from a kick in.

Probably a bit of a guide to the whole team and problem at the moment. Playing risk averse footy, and kick ins are no different (I don't know the stats on short kicks from kick-ins, but gut feel is we would be high compared to other teams).

Taking risks will burn us sometimes, but not taking risks is allowing our opponents to get their setup in front of us exactly how they want it.

Time this week to break out of the rut. Do the basics well which will pressure GC enough (particularly on the scoreboard) to open up the game a little and allow us to take higher risk/reward options.

Ok re Kelly or Cogs this is the plan.

We get both. Tim now and Cogs in two years.

Cogs signs a similar contract as Josh Kelly just signed. Two years plus options. In two years he comes to us as a RFA for free apart from $. In two years Hurn, JK, Masten, Jetta and Schofield will be retired opening up cap space.

We land Tim now and can squeeze him in with some back loading.

Winners!!!!

Starting to see Sharps name a bit now, looking fwd to the champs to get a good look a him. Same with Jackson, but like you really think mids should be our priority.

I read something earlier this week, Knightmare and a few others had Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell as better prospects than Sam Walsh. Anytime I watched Rowell last year he did star as an underager. Love to trade up if possible.

Man when I think about it I kind of think our next generation of mids is pretty average.

Ah Chee, Venables, Ainsworth, Brayshaw, MAllen, O'Neill, Foley

I know you can't write any off by a long shot but the lack of proven talent makes me think we need to consolidate this part of the ground.

It probably makes the potential signing of Tim Kelly or Stephen Coniglio a little bit more important.

alec waterman has nominated for the mid season draft hopefully we can sneak him in later in the year if he doesnt get selected.

can we select him as a father son again?

Is he worth picking up again - how has his form been and his body (size wise and injury wise)?

Tpday I watched "On The Couch" from Monday night and they brought up the measure of Post Stoppage Contested Possession Differential. The term is apparently been around about 18 months and starting to gain in traction.

The top 3 clubs of Geelong, Pies and GWS are rated top 3 and we are rated second bottom. We expereinced first hand against Geelong how that works as the clean post stoppages are generally ending up in fast ball to the forwards and high conversion rates to 6 pointers

Clubs that do very well have inside bulls who get first hands on the ball and then inside mids who can accelerate away from the stoppages . We basically have 3 in Rioli, Yeo and Shuey, although we are trying to use Yeo as an inside bull and Rioli is out of action so limited.

Melbourne have been caught out having too many inside bulls (Brayshaw and Oliver fighting over the same ball).

When you have endurance runners who are not fast but can run all day in the likes of Hutchings, Gaff and Masten plus Sheed and Redden, it is not suprising we are struggling on this measure. And I suggest that if we could improve in this measure will take personnel changes.

What does it say to me?
No tag target no Hutchings.
Only one of Sheed or Redden in for clearances.
Gaff definitely to the wing and not inside.
Masten either develops as a HBF or pisses off.
Perhaps Cole could be brought in to midfield as he played this sort of role in U18.

When I see some analysis, it can be insightful to use that to look at team balance and performances against it.

For those wanting Venables to the midfield, he is neither a bull nor does he possess any speed away from teh contest. Foley runs all day but not very fat however O'Neall my fit the bill.

Ideally we get Coniglio but failing that I like Sharp and there are other mids rated around the 10 to 25 mark that would be worth honing in on.

It’s also worth noting that of the three top sides in ‘post stoppage contested possession differential’, we beat two of them convincingly.
