By no means next to nothing Groggy. Certainly his defensive pressure can marketdly improve and a weakness of his for quite a while has been his agility.

Really needs to work hard in that area just to add another dimension to his game.

That's my worry in trading for him. If he's having a shit game, there's no Plan B with him.

You could argue he's an upgrade on Edwards but the only thing McKinley has over him is kicking at goal which has been poor this season. Not sure what's happened since 2008 but maybe a different environment can bring it back.

Warren, Edwards and McKinley is unlikely to work in the same forward line. I do feel with Warren though, with his huge tank and willingness to run his arse off, he could be moved on to the wing at times.

Not keen on him but would not be devastated if we do bring him in.

He was good for East Perth this year.

11 Games
140 Kicks
45 HandBalls
72 Marks
39 Goals
27 Points
21 Tackles

Career at East Perth - 58 Games (124 Goals / 105 Points).

East Perth has probably better users of the ball in the middle. :p

Not so harsh in your assessment this time Benno? :p

I'm a bit biased knowing and having played with Ben, but I know for a fact that we will not see the best of him until he finishes his Law Degree and is back in Victoria.

Take it how you will, although I know for a fact he has been courted by clubs over the past 2 years, namely Carlton and Essendon, although West Coast aren't fans of dealing with the Blues. All players have their weaknesses, who doesn't, the fact of the matter is we aren't getting Chris Judd or Gary Ablett. We're after a player that may blossom or may not. #69 is not much of a risk

Sorry to keep sounding like Negative Nellie, but could he (i.e. is there a slight chance that he will) blossom into a Brian Lake, James Hird, Chris Grant-type or is the best we can expect another serviceable to good player like Azza.

In other words, are we giving up an opportunity to fluke an A-grader for the near certainty of getting, at best, another good ordinary player?

If so, I'll take the longshot every day of the week.

Melbourne has baulked at several offers from Vic clubs for Adam Maric. Could be part of Hale trade half a minute ago via web

Found this above posted on deepthrots twitter page two minutes ago.
and this below off the Melborne website

A third-year player, Maric is another youngster the Demons will be hoping can develop in 2010 and have a better run with injuries. Played six games between rounds 6-12 last year and went back to the VFL where he dislocated his shoulder and missed the second half of the season. Smart mover in attack and will be looking for more senior opportunities this season.

Draft history: 2007 NAB AFL Draft 2nd round selection (Melbourne) No. 21 overall

When was the last time we fluked an A grader with any pick?
Champions at pick 69 are a thing of the past with that much science going into the draft research.

I'd be happy if Maric was included in the hale deal. Liked interested in him in 2007.

The writing has been on the wall for Maric for a long time.

Plus he wouldn't go well under Brad's no drinking/ultra-professional environment.

HH#3 has sold me pick #69 do it he is a good player.

Anybody that has kicked 40 goals to me is better than someone who may kick 40 goals.

Reality is for what Hale really offers in the ruck and around the ground at his best he is a 40 goal full forward player who can cost goals when rebounding and we look like getting good compensation for him and replace him with pick 69....l like it.

42 goals a year ago is top 15 on the goal kicking this year and a long way up on what we had this year. Thomas with 28 may have got that many if he continued to play the year out but only when he became the focal forward did he really start to look likely (Freo/Carlton).
That wont happen when Petrie is back next year....do the deal for mine

Let me get this straight.

McKinley is a great grab for his size and can take a shot on goal with an accurate boot from the 50/55mtr range. He is slow, lacks defensive pressure and offers next to nothing if the ball hits the deck. Essentially a forward player who has next to no potential of playing any other position.

This about right?

His defensive pressure is much better than that of Warren and Edwards - our primary medium forwards. Averaged more tackles than both of them this year, and has markedly improved his defensive pressure.

People keep imagining this kid in the mould of Warren and Edwards, but because he isn't on North's list, he is 'worse'. He can take a grab, can kick goals (potential for big bags, which I haven't seen from Wazza and Azza), he isn't overly slow like some would suggest; I would say he is average pace, maybe even quicker on the lead. He is certainly no slower than our two medium forwards. In addition people seem to think he is so impossibly slow that he can't tackle. See my above point, he averaged more tackles than both of our two medium forwards, despite West Coast's lack of inside 50s. Also, people seem to think that he isn't talented and has reached his ceiling. He is extremely talented as he showed with his bags and goal tallies in his first few years, he just haven't been given an opportunity this year, despite his form in the WAFL.

This kid is far from 'slow', he is far from 'extremely limited' and to be quite honest, just because he isn't on our list doesn't mean he is worse than our two medium forwards, in fact, I'd back him to kick more goals than the both of them playing in the same positions.

He ain't crap and he ain't limited. Pick #69 is an absolute bargain for a kid with that talent.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm sick of people calling this kid crap just because he hasn't been on our list from day one and they haven't seen much of him.

McKinley must have got on the wrong side of Woosha this year as he was consistently better than Lynch who was in our team most of the year yet he kept getting dropped.

McKinley is the second most goal smart forward on our list(behind Le Cras) and manages to get goals by great position. He is strong with the ability to keep his feet and great mark on the lead.
Let down by his speed, becomes a bit of a liability once the ball is being rushed out of defence. His endurance appears to have been lifted since he was pushed into the midfield at East Perth.

If NM can get him for 69, they should take it and run. Worth far more. Blows my mind that people think your going to even pick up a mildly capable player that deep into a compromised draft...

Winner winner chicken dinner.

I wonder how many of these neigh sayers have actually seen Ben play a full AFL match.

Good post.

As I have said, I would state that he has an extremely good knowledge of how the forward line functions, whilst possessing good goal and positional sense.

Essential for a forward, and Brad would love a player who plays to structures.

I'm trying to find out if we are the team most likely to secure his services.

I'd guess Carlton will maybe hit up Spangher and/or Gamble, excluding McKinley.

I'm worried the Dogs are going to trump us with a bid for McKinley.

Jesus christ were going to have a lot of Bens on our team if we make that deal..

Speight, Cunners, Ross, Warren and now we may get another

Yeah my questions about the kid were formulated from a multi quote post by Ohhh Errol from earlier in the thread, as I haven't seen enough of the kid to make any judgement calls.

I don't think anybody has really called him crap per se, tbh. Just some genuine concerns on whether he would take our list further forward than a late pick in the draft.

By the sounds of it he most likely would.

Nice rant though.:thumbsu:

haha, "don't shoot the messenger"

I went across to the Melbourne board to see how they speak of Addam Maric. It's not pretty. Could do another ripper multquote post. I would spew if we can't get our hands on pick 12. ...at least now that Hutchy's gone and planted the seed...

you got to acknowledge Melbournes use of the draft in recent years, PP's, offload a train wreck for pick 11, and now that the draft is a shadow of it's former self they opt to trade in players and trade out their 2nd rounder. "You can have our 2nd rounder, too bad it'll probably be worth pick 35." FFS.

McKinley was down on form this year but still managed 1 more shot on goal than Azza in 4 less games. Seems to be Cloke-like with his accuracy the last couple of seasons (46.42 in 27 games) but can his 42.20 in '08 shows he can kick straight & I love how comfortable he is roosting shots from 50m. He is 2 years older than Milky, 3 years younger than Azza & averages .6 goals per game more than both of them.

Definately worth #69.
