Won't get any disagreement from me. Just wish they were emergencies for our main list. Hope we don't get 2 late withdrawals from the team! Otherwise, no real suprise that we are using the same line-up.

More of a question than a comment.

If there are late withdrawals from the team through legitimate injury, can you replace them with any player from your squad or must they come from the named emergencies??

Anybody know??

I am pretty sure it has to come from the emergencies if you don't want a $5000 fine. The only "legit" way that you could select unnamed player is if one or more of the emergencies are injured and you have someone else pull from the side. I think thats the only way you can go without being fined.

Goody looks set to play but in case he misses out Gags gets a chance. If anyone else pulls out we are in strife!!!!!!

Whats this with trying to convert Schell into a backman:confused: He is a softy. Any half decent AFL forward would kick a bag on him and have a BIG day out!!!!!!

Possible Matchups

Backs
McGregor v Riewoldt - Need someone with height & strength. Will be a good test for Kenny.
Bassett v Hamill - Hound is a great matchup for Hamill, as they are both hard at the ball
Hart v Milne - Need to put a smart & quick player on Milne. Would prefer Stiffy a go, but he has been named on the bench.

Midfield
Stenglein v Hayes - Hayes is probably more of a danger than Harvey.
Goodwin v Harvey - After a quiet game last week by his standards, confident Goody keep Harvey in check, whilst doing plenty of damage himself.
Reilly v Ball - Would be great to see 2 of the best young midfielders on each other.

Forwards
Stevens v Penny - Will be an interesting to see how Penny copes with the responsibility after crossing from the Bullies.
Carey v Koschitzke - Would be a great battle assuming Kosi is fit. Better than Polak at this stage of his career.
Perrie v Hudghton - Can't see Maxy holding Sarge. They may need to shift Gehrig back to cover our 3 talls.

Correct, you can replace someone outside the emergencies if you are willing to pay a fine. On Schell, it doesn't really matter what we position he is groomed for as the biggest conversion problem is into an AFL footballer fullstop! :o

I think Daniel Schell deserves another chance

He dominates in the SANFL and should be able to convert that in the AFL

He needs confidence and to attack the ball harder

He has had nowhere near the same amount of chances as Marsh and I think its unfair he's put in the same category.

None of our other key possie players did much on the weekend excepot Hentschell and I think he may be given at least half a season with the Eages before being considered.

Fair point about Schell not having had the same opportunities as Marsh.

BUT if he ever does get another chance, then he MUST attack the ball harder. He was very soft last year, and it is this aspect of his game which gets him lumped into the same category as Marsh.

Exactly right!!!!!!

In all honesty, Schell is capable of taking some very good marks. He can take a high flier as he did against Melbourne last year over the top of Birdman. One BIG problem with Schell is he doesn't go in hard enough. I think last year Schell played 2 solid games for us, against Sydney and Brisbane. Personally I liked his Sydney game better because he was hard at the ball. When Stevens got polaxed early in that game Ayersy threw Schell at CHF and left Fitzy in the goal square. Schell presented himself very well in that game. He took 7 marks, 5 of which were contested and kicked a goal. Thats the Schell we like to see. Schell that rocked up for the Brisbane game wasn't bad either. The problem is he doesn't do it on consistent basis. Also he is very suspect on ground level and what Kerls calls "quick reflex stuff". He also doesn't chase and harass defensively. His kicking depth also leaves lot to be desired. Hopefully he turns into a solid tall defender as I don't like his chances as a forward, maybe as a pinch hitting forward at best.

I've been close to writing of Schell but for two things.

1. His game against Brisbane last season was a major factor in our victory that night.

2. He was pretty much taking the number one or two defender. If he were to play in our current line up, he'd be taking number three at best. He also tends to play taller than his 191cm suggests.

I'd be willing to give him another go.

As for Marsh...

I would be prepared to perceiver with Schell for another 1 or 2 years, granted he was a bit on the soft side when attacking the ball last year & showed very little in defensive skills, but as has been said he's been playing down back for the Bulldogs so far this year & again is named in defense this week, if Ben Marsh can be given 10years to reach his potential then lets give Schell a fair go as he can take a good pack mark & is a fairly accurate & long kick for goal,

lol, i like ur signature!!!!:p

James Gallagher is making his way over to Melbourne to possibly replace one of the Crow's running brigade.....KG suspects either Mattner or Goody.....he's a smart fellow.....I don't think we lose a hell of a lot in any switch, though Goody is a class above most others....if he misses it will give the Saints a lift, but will be a good opportunity for one of our other less established midfielders to maybe get some decent match time.

I have a funny feeling that Goody is the one to miss. While Gallagher is not in Goody's class he is a VERY good player. Last time he played against saints he got 3 Brownlow Medal votes and was easily BOG. This might just be the opportunity he needs to grap his spot. Hopefully he is given a faur crack at it.

On another note, Reidy didn't give much away as to who will match up on Milne but reading between the lines I think it will be Hart.

Whilst you prefer to have all your players fit, it may be a great opportunity for Gags to play whilst he is fit & in form. If he plays, I would like to see him get plenty of minutes to remind us of what he is capable of.

Not suprised the Hart will have the job on Milne. None of the other defenders named to start are well suited IMO. Would like to see Stiffy though given the challenge like Mattner last week was given Medhurst. Need to find out younger players capababilities now rather than in finals.

Is it just me or are Crows appearing to blood Mattner as a defender to take over from Smart at the end of the year??????

Personally I would start Gallagher on the wing and give him freedom to run all day. He is one of our fittest players and dare I say it one of our more skillful players on both sides of the body.

No doubt Ayres is blooding young talent - ie. Mattner, Reilly, etc. Nothing wrong with that IMO. He sent the runner out to Mattner numerous times last week & persisted with him, even though he got a bath. We need to see what these players are capable of & whether they learn from their mistakes & develop into better players. However, having said that, if Mattner regularly gets beaten, then he should head back to Sturt for further development. I like the kid as he is hard at the ball & there is a role for him in the future.
