I'll confess - I don't know what makes a good actor (or at least better than average). But I can tell a bad actor or performance when i see one.

Most good/bad acting performances are based purely on the quality of the film. Rarely do you hear an actor praised for their work in a rubbish film. When the Oscar nominations come out, the best Actors, supporting Actors, directors, cinematographers all come from the same few films.

When making a quality film:
1. get the best writers.
2 get the best director.
3. Get the best set designers, photographers etc - the guys who create the 'look' of the film.
4. get the best actors.

To make a commercially successful film.
1. get the best-known actor
2. Get the cutest supporting actress
3. Get the writer etc.........

OK, let me rephrase that, Bale is an amazing actor when looking at 2000-present. Personally I think Bale is a better actor than Robert Downey. As for Di Caprio, Rockwell and Norton, spare me.
