Didn't know the guy. Never met him. I wasn't his biggest fan. I must sadly admit to cursing his name a few times over the second half of the season. In saying all of this, I feel absolutely gutted. I can't even imagine how his family, friends and teammates feel. RIP JMac.

I've gone from shock, to being absolutely gutted, to on the verge of tears all day.

Yeah. I had to hold it together at work all day but had a fair cry on the long drive home.

It just seems so surreal. I keep looking at photos and video and think 'nah, surely not?'.

I never met him so wont pretend to know him or anything, but im very gutted by this. Its heart breaking. Its a tragedy that the football community wont get to see the improvement he had in him for 2013.

Terrible news for all those involved. I'm genuinely saddened by this so couldn't even begin to imagine what those close to John must be feeling/going through right now.

Just want to say that the way Port Adelaide as a club have seemed to handle the situation thus far has been very thoughtful and respectful given the circumstances.

So several AFL clubs and people close to those clubs, as well as several local footy clubs will be feeling the families loss. So I can see the AFL industry getting behind some tribute.

I had no idea of his family AFL pedigree. The reason for the long delay in releasing John's name to the media were because they were trying to locate Matthew in Ireland.

We loved J Mac at the Pies and were thrilled that Port Adelaide gave him the opportunity to show his talent. He was held in such high regard that many of us monitored his career with you guys. I fully expected him to be a long serving player for the Power.

Not often a player is taken, I can't believe I won't see him running around and that it's happened..
