Review WA 2023 - Western Australia’s junior footy talent

Remove this Banner Ad

Out of that top 5 on the list swomovacrom put together would you expect all 5 to be taken?

I think so.

I think we all know this is a talented 2023 WA group despite the state efforts. GWS and Carlton weren't in great form at that stage either but now they look ok. State 18's is a small sample. It's important but it's not everything.

In fact, one scout told me that the WCE/FD don't mind at all if some of the WA players underperform at national 18's level and go under the radar. I don't know if that's true or not but he claims it is.

Definitely a talented year, i would not be surprised if a couple went in the next few years, possibly mid season intakes if there WAFL development excels.

Clearly non WA folks picked the three...otherwise Kayle Gerreyn would be selected. Worries me that the people that select these squads don't really have a current handle on things....those three selected (and no offence to them) are last year's state 16's stars and perhaps this year's stars but things change.

Van der struf is a big suprise for me here. I thought Bo Allan was solid for the 18’s this year and Champion finished strong in colts.

He isn't the best player, but clubs love speed and Van Der Struyf has speed, if they can use his line breaking it could be a useful counter attacking weapon, AFL Clubs love speed...

Perth through to the grand final.

EF put up a rather unexpectedly good season but Perth proved to strong.

Watched this game live at BOG performances were
(EF) Chad Dunscombe- Was a standout for EF through his hard running and fought with everything he had all day
(P) Noah Cachard- Always seemed to be dangerous and hit the scoreboard too. Was a big body mid for Perth who seemed to control the game at stages
(P) Elijah Scoble- Had the job on Jack Cocking and performed really well. Used his height advantage to outmark cocking and limit his influence
(P) Cooper Moore- Seemed to pop up when Perth needed him in moments of doubt to swing the momentum. Also kicked 2 goals

Noah cachard seems to have good numbers this year does he have pace and skill is he damaging with those numbers ?

Where is Lance Collard going to go where does he sit in relation to N Watson and Cohen I see he can kick bags and looks electric in the highlights I have seen.

Kudos to the Perth boys for gaining that remaining GF spot. EF did well to go as deep as they did....undersized side, with no out n out ruck or tall forward. Can only see Sanchez getting drafted, Cocking maybe, but TBH at 189cm he is not tall enough tp play as a KP or fast enough to be on a HFF. Be interesting to see who gets elevated to a senior spot....Cocking, Otto, Wills, Spadanuda, Campbell, Austin, Dunscombe and Petersen maybe?

Where is Lance Collard going to go where does he sit in relation to N Watson and Cohen I see he can kick bags and looks electric in the highlights I have seen.
Cal Twomey had him in his most recent top 30. He often knows something ahead of time.

I don't ask clubs anything. It spoils the fun. So anywhere between 25 and rookie.

10 goals in two finals games must have caught the eye of a fair few recruiters.

As for Noah Cachard, he's certainly got something. One of those players who has improved so dramatically that it caught me by surprise. Some of his midfield run and carry is elite.....along with some unexpected athleticism He might have left his run a bit late but not for those who do their due dilliegence.

My "Genuine" Draft Chances and their AFL Comparisons (My personal opinion) Obviously some of these players are genuine AFL stars, these comparisons are based on if these young boys were to reach their max potential with their personal play style, body, position etc. Also includes their rating from Futbolista. I've put them in the order of what I think they will be taken.

The Big Chances
1-Daniel Curtin (CL) - A bit stuck on this one, he's quite unique. Would love for him to take some more marks and be a highly versatile version of Steven May but as of right now I see a bit of Jack Crisp, he's slower than Crisp but makes up for it in how much time he buys himself. I went Jack Crisp partially for the versatility and also the fact that he's a bit more of a distributor rather than a lock-down or high-flying interceptor.

2-Mitchell Edwards (PT) (FREO NGA) - Tim English - Really good around the ground already with potential to be a better tap-ruckman than English.

3-Koltyn Tholstrup
(S) - Toby Greene/Jamie Elliott - Medium sized forward that can also play as a lead up and highly explosive. Bit of mongrel and grunt about him whilst also playing fair but very hard footy.

4-Riley Hardeman (SD) - Lachie Whitfield - Decently paced rebounding defender with lots of class in the way he uses the ball, often ends up sending it inside 50 similar to Whitfield. Both also have the ability to come up the ground whether it be on a wing or inside on the odd occasion.

5-Clay Hall (PT) - Tom Liberatore - Hall has such an incredible desire for the ball on the deck which makes this a relatively easy choice for me. So powerful and well attributed in contested situations. Hall can be a little bit of a hack at times but will fix that with his hard work.

8-Lance Collard
(S) (WCE NGA) - Shai Bolton all over - Lightning quick, incredible skills, electrifying game winner but can also go missing on the odd occasion, although Incredible upside.

The Middle range - Surprise chances:

10-Zane Zakostelsky (CL) - Mark Blicavs - What a prospect Zakostelsky is, may be a project player but at his size (196cm, but maybe even taller) he moves incredibly well. terrific athlete, can jump can run and can run fast. I see him being Blicavs 2.0.

9-Reece Torrent (PT) - I see him as a bit of Liberatore too but is also able to create so much time and space for himself whilst also having an undying hunger to crash packs and win the ball at the source.

6-Koen Sanchez (EF) - Sam Switkowski - It might be the curls but I definitely see many similarities between these two. Can always manufacture a goal when the side needs it and can also run through the middle supplying speed and burst inside.

2-Riley Wills
(S) - Zak Butters - Just so hard at everything, always seems to be running at 95%+ effort, both electrifying match winners that hit the scoreboard a lot.

12-Aiden O'Driscoll (P/PSA) - Errol Gulden - Both small, rapid players. Only knock is I'd like to see O'Driscoll get more of the footy, his speed is sensational and he is damaging whenever he gets the ball, just would like to see him get it more.

3-Joseph Fonti (CL) - Obviously a defender but the only way to describe the way Fonti moves through traffic and creates his own time is Pendles like. Fonti seems untouchable at times.

5-Oscar Hine-Baston (P) (WCE NGA) - Isaac Quaynor - Explosive speed, strongly built and both just play the same way. They'll beat their opponent 1 on 1 and then attack the game and break lines. Both brilliant, booming kicks of the footy. I think Hine-Baston is the most likely to be rookie'd out of the WCE NGA Boys.

Outside chance - Rookie possibilities

7-Coen Livingstone (P) (WCE NGA) - Tom De Koning maybe? - Probably a 60%FWD 40%Ruck type player at 200cm. Livingstone is hard to find a comparison too, certainly has a bit of X-factor (for a ruckman) as we've seen with some of the goals he's kicked. I'd take a little bit of polish off of Tom De Koning and add some real grunt and aggression. I do think Livingstone has a far higher chance/possibility of ending up on a list than the others in this grouping.

26-Ashton Ferreira (SF) - Nic Martin - Both skillful, attacking wingman. Ferreira proved he could accumulate at league level too, if not this year, one to watch next year for sure. Ferreira looks a nice size on the wing too.

11-Tyler Senge
(S) (WCE NGA) - Arthur Jones - I encourage everyone to watch Arthur Jones draft year highlights then watch Senge play. The move identically. From their running style, way they step, way they kick, everything looks the same. Both slightly built indigenous wingers. Although can't see it happening for Senge this year with Collard, OHB and Livingstone.

Like I said, this is just my opinion, if you'd like more comparison or analysis on anyone else let me know. I didn't but could have included the likes of Luke Kelly (Serong comparison) Evan Smith and Xavier Walsh (Naughton), Cocking (Undecided), Whan maybe as Freo's only real NGA prospect outside of Edwards, players who could all also slot into some of these categories.
GREAT group will add one other Xavier Walsh 195cm key forward
Very athletically gifted for a big guy very good speed and good belows his knee's is injury prone
But has gifts that would work at AFL level

WAFL Colts Grand Final Claremont v Perth at Optus Stadium, Sunday September 24, 12.10pm WA/2.10pm Vic

Hopefully it's a high standard game. As always in grand finals, Claremont appear to have a slightly better side on paper but Perth do play a nice attacking brand of direct football and they will have plenty of support from their diehard fans and neutrals as they haven't had a lot of success over the years. They are the perennial underdogs.

Coen Livingstone is under an injury cloud and probably won't play sadly. Apart from that Perth are at full strength and this team is seen by many of their supporters as the launching pad for future sustained senior success.

Claremont on the other hand have all their PSA players available. Those include Jett Sibosado, Bailey.Banfield, Sullivan Moody, Austin Van Der Struyf, Jaxon Douglas, Hamish Davis, Will.Hayes, Ashton Bryant and Aiden Riddle. Not to mention a host of former PSA stars like Daniel Curtin, Joe Fonti and Joe Matthews among others. In fact they've had to leave some out of the extended squad of 27. Curtin returns from their league team. What a player to bring back for a GF!

It might sound like a cliche but this really is a story of two vastly different zones (country regions aside) and metropolitan demographics. Albany Highway (P) and Stirling Highway/West Coast Drive (CL) - chalk and cheese.

Notable names
Claremont: Daniel Curtin (WA 18's/BF#1), Joe Matthews (WA 18's/BF#35), Kai Dehavilland (WA 18's/FP/WAFL/RMC teams of the year/BF#27), Bailey.Banfield (BF#16), Sam Van Rooyen (WA 18's/BF#13), Josh Howard (FP TotY/BF#40), Riley Disisto (WAFL TotY), Joe Fonti (WA 18's/RMC/WAFL/FP TotY), Sullivan Moody (BF#32), Zane Zakostelsky (WA 18's/BF#10), Austin Van Der Struyf (WA 18's/2024 prospect), Cody Angove (FP/WAFL TotY/2024 prospect), Jaxon Bizzaca (WAFL TotY), Hamish Davis (2024 Prospect), Jaxon Douglas (2024 prospect)

Perth: Aiden O'Driscoll (WA 18's/BF#12), Cooper Moore (2024 prospect), Jake Watson (RMC/WAFL/FP TotY), Kalib Dempster-Park (FP/WAFL TotY), Oscar Hine-Baston (WA 18's/RMC TotY), Noah Cachard (FP/WAFL TotY/BF#28), Cameron Hall (WAFL TotY), Elijah Scoble (WA 18's/RMC/FP TotY/BF#30), Robert Warrell (2024 prospect), Coen Livingstone (WA 18's/FP/WAFL/RMC TotY/BF#8), Noah Murray (BF#46), Ali Al Shuweli (2024 prospect), Michael Hall (3rd WAFL colts goalkickers)

Really keen to see ZZ go round in this one - the type my beloved Swans tend to need (and the Swans aren’t afraid to draft a Claremont product!)

He's going to get drafted by some club.

It's the same as last year in a funny kind of way. At the end of June/July Reuben Ginbey (EP) emerged. Despite what some might say he wasn't on national boards before that. Then Ed Allan (CL) started to get some attention. Toward the end of the season it was Kaleb Smith (EF) and then during finals word got around that clubs were looking at Josh Draper (PT). Although I don't ask - sometimes you overhear or just get told - and you can't unhear it.

There was a late buzz around Ryan Newick (S) but he didn't even nominate. Hats off, the big league wasn't for him and fair play to that. Christian Wilson (SF) went to the SANFL but sadly did his knee pre-season.

This year it's Zane Zakostelsky (CL), Joe Fonti (CL), Riley Wills (S) and Odin Jones (WP) - with Lance Collard (S) going much higher than we probably have him here. (that's the word around the place)

Let's see! It's fascinating one way or another.

Curtin warming up.....Dehavilland, Banfield, Angove, Zakostelsky, Howard good for the Monts.

Murray, O'Driscoll, Scoble, Moore hanging in for the demons. Free kick tally is 3 to 11 in favour of Claremont. Not comfortable with that from my view.
