Review WA 2023 - Western Australia’s junior footy talent

Despite the abysmal 4th quarter, Claremont deserved the win.

Zakostelsky probably the dominant player on the ground. Huge in the ruck & second highest possession count behind Curtin.

Curtin had a very good 2nd and 3rd quarter, before being pushed into defence as Claremont shut up shop and basically stopped to a walk.

O’Driscoll exceptional for Perth. Never stopped running and creating.

Sam Van Rooyen presented a strong marking target early but faded out of it. Beaten by Scoble.

Joe Fonti was steady and dependable at half back, but not dominant.

At first I liked Hall, but he's rather limited in his ability to play multiple positions.
He may struggle to get drafted. I used to get sucked into rating them highly.
Yeah he's no certainty to get drafted.

Having said that I've kept him in the top 10 based quite a bit on his performances at league level which were good.

He might not ever become an out and out AFL star but I reckon he'd be ready for AFL senior footy sooner than most of the other players on the list.

Hall can definitely find the footy. I think he lacks skill execution and defensive mentality, but still will most probably get drafted.
If we’re talking league footy. Curtain obviously averaging around 18 disposals at league level, he is clearly ready.
Another one is Ferreira. I think he’s averaging over 20 disposals at league level across multiple games. Rumor on the street is he got a state combine invite recently.
All in all I think the draft has everyone guessing this year.

I would be happy with Hall he can find the footy he likes the contest and has clean hands.

Did anyone watch the futures game before the GF yesterday? Just wondering how the WA boys went.
I watched it.

Bo Allan took some good defensive clunks. Starting to get a Daniel Curtin vibe about him as he appears taller and leaner and has gained confidence from playing state footy as an underager. Messed up a couple of times with his kicks though.

Austin Van Der Struyf was servicable in the backline. Showed some good poise, is a smooth mover, hits nearly all of his targets.

Malakai Champion had a busy game - probably 14-16 disposals. A lot of them handpasses to players running by. Didn't do anything magical but proved that despite his small stature he can compete at a high level.

Shame not to see Otis Harvey or Kayle Gerreyn play. Gerreyn would have been the best ruck/KPF in the game had he played and if I'm wrong we'll never know.

Hard to see a first round pick from WA next year sadly as the standard of the match was high. There are some really good players for next year from the other states and territories and our group isn't as good as usual I feel but hope to be wrong.

Van Der Struyf, I was hoping for a bit more from him.
I think the RMC report was on the money. Van Der Struyf doesn't seem to have the ability to get himself into a position to spoil in the aerial contests. I know he's a fine distributor of the ball and every team loves a defender who can open up the game with searching accurate kicks but maybe he is better suited to a wing.

He played wing in the last couple games for the 18’s. When he got it he used pace and skill by foot but didn’t seem to find too much of it

Mate cant see a WA pick in the first 20 next year looks a really poor crop for high end talent
Kayle Gerreyn looks the best and would be a 20 to 30 pick

I believe that also. Didn't help that he didn't get picked in the 17's game. He would outcraft ruck and forward those guys with ease.

The good thing is that there are a bunch of players in that 25-60 range and hopefully that's where we make up the numbers.

I'm led to believe that the WA state combine list has increased to 10.

I know of 8 of them. Jack Cocking (EF), Luker Kentfield (S), Odin Jones (WP), Joe Fonti (CL), Riley Wills (S), Oscar Hine-Baston (P), Sam Van Rooyen (CL) & Coen Livingstone (P).

Does anyone know who the two most recent additions are? It was mentioned here that Ashton Ferreira (SF) might be one.

Lawson Humphries is No. 10.

Ferreira and Humphries from Swans reserves.

Was at the Combine on Sunday to have a look very interesting day it was, Standouts had to be: Riley wills (S), Oscar Hine-Bastion (P) Joe Fonti (C) and Sam Van Rooyen (C) . Will be interesting to see who gets picked up from this crop they had about an hour in between their agility test and the 2km Time trial and Wills spent that whole time talking to multiple clubs coming up to him while a lot of them were sitting around has to be a firm chance any others you guys reckon have it in them at the next level.
