The Port Adelaide Football club actually won the license for the AFL in 1995 but weren’t able to join in 1996 because a team had to give way so in 1997 Port Adelaide moved from the SANFL to the AFL because Fitzroy left a vacant spot or something to the likes of that.

The SANFL asked for any interested parties to submit an application to bid for the 16th AFL licence (once it became available) in 1994, by my recollections there were 3 organizations that were tendering for the licence. The Norwood FC and Sturt FC were going to merge if they were awarded the second South Australia licence, a cartel lead by Woodville- West Torrens Eagles FC, Central Districts FC, West Adelaide FC and Glenelg FC (IIRC) (and I cannot remember how they were possibly going to make this relationship work this) and of course the sole entry by the Port Adelaide Football club.

As we now know Port Adelaide Football Club were awarded the licence in 1995, the name and logo of the Port Adelaide Power was registered in late 1995 or early 1996 and played there first official game in 1997

Not quite correct. The club was formed in 1996.
No, PAFC was formed in 1880 or thereabouts. This is the club which now has the nickname "Power", and which now has a team entered in the AFL competition. The AFL wanted a traditional SANFL club to join the AFL in 1997, and that was exactly what happened.

The club that was formed in 1996 was the "Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club" (PAMFC) which played its first game in the SANFL in 1997.

As a Crows supporter, why do you assist in enabling their false history? The club they have in the SANFL was formed in 1870.

It's like the local nerdy kid telling everyone the big bikie down the road is really a great guy, just so he we will be left alone by the thug.

That is not correct.

The club that is playing in the SANFL is the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club, which was formed in 1996 and first played in 1997.

WTF?

Lets just stick to the facts, hey?

AFL invited a traditional SANFL club to join the AFL in 1997. There was a bidding contest amongst the SANFL clubs at the time to get that license. Port Adelaide Football Club (PAFC), established 1870, won that bid and got the license.

As a part of what they bid, they promised the SANFL that they would establish a new side to play in their place in the SANFL. This they did. The new side was Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club (PAMFC), which was established in 1996 and first played in 1997. The new club (PAMFC) was based at Ethelton, and the PAFC (now with a new nickname "the Power") was based still at Alberton, just as it had been for many a year. These are all plain, straightforward simple and easily verified facts. Why would anyone even contest them?

It is like the situation with "Western Bulldogs". On the back of their jumpers, one can see the letters "FFC". Those letters stand for "Footscray Football Club".

No-one disputes that the "Western Bulldogs" is a nickname for the Footscray Football Club, and that this is the same club (then called "Footscray") as played VFL for many a year past.

What is so hard to understand that "the Power" is a nickname for the Port Adelaide Football Club, and that this is the same club (then called "Port Adelaide") as played SANFL for many a year past?

PS: Having said all that, I note that the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club on the SANFL website:

http://www.sanfl.com.au/default.aspx?s=genericnewsdisplay&kw=66&aid=98130

... claims the Port Adelaide Football Club's history as its own. No wonder people are confused. "Port Adelaide" (whoever they are, and whoever they claim to be) deserve all the abuse that they cop on this issue, pulling stunts like that IMO.

Can we please not start this again?

I know where my team came from, it's history and boy have I got a lot of enjoyment out of it over the years because I have actually lived it.

You can go on about history all you want, but am sure most Geelong, Melbourne, Saints, Bulldogs, and to some extent Collingwood supporters going around Bigfooty would much rather experience success than reading about it. Port Adelaide supporters have it and will continue to have it.

Just out of curiosity, how did Gavin Wanganeen get aligned to the PAMFC when he returned to the Power ? Considering that the PAMFC was a 'NEW' entity, shouldnt Gavin have gone in the 'SANFL mini draft' that year ?

It happened for the same reason players on the PAFC list for the 96 season were on teh PAMFC list for the 97 season. The PAMFC took all future SANFL creditions off the PAFC when they were formed BY the PAFC.

Port Adelaide Football Club-Est 1870.

Port Adelaide Power-Est 1996, entered AFL 1997.

I think that's about right.
The fact that you think it doesn't make it right. I can't see what is so attractive to Victorians to attempt blatant history revisionism on the acts of South Australian footy clubs.

Here are the corrections for you:

Port Adelaide Football Club-Est 1870, entered AFL 1997 and made to change nickname to Power and made to change club colours in order to appease Collingwood.

Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club-Est 1996, entered SANFL 1997.

I don't need any protecting, thanks anyway.

Apparently, the simple truth does need protecting, however.

FINALLY! There is a Crows supporter on BigFooty who knows our true history, not this BullSh*t that stubborn ass Cows supporters have made up.

To everyone who continously try to rubbish Port's history and make your own, how about checking some sites like these:

www.portadelaidefc.com.au
www.portmagpies.com.au
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Adelaide_Power

They all clearly state how Port Adelaide's history goes. If you can't understand that, or believe it's a load of rubbish, then you have serious problems.

ok.crows, full props to you man. I've finally seen a respectable Crows supporter here on BigFooty.

The SANFL agreed that to continue the tradition of the PAFC in the SANFL, the PAMFC were to share the records of the PAFC up to the PAFC entering the AFL.

Silly decision.
