Quantum of Solace....done watching it.

Yeah, that was not as good as Casino Royale. Some good scenes or aspects, but the downsides were......the seizure-inducing rapid editing, worse than a Michael Bay film which is saying something.....the nerdy villain who can somehow keep up a good fight against a more powerful trained assassin.....the film raced thru the story, not leaving much room for better character interactions and more espionage and double-dealings. Notice the film time is 1:46:00 which is a whole 80 minutes shorter than the rest of the Craig Bond films. Shows how much more they could've done with the story if they tried better.

Taking advantage of Disney +: 2.99 month.

Jungle Cruise- 7/10. Good chemistry from Dwayne Johnson and Blunt. Pretty much trying to rip off Brendan Frasers The Mummy, but there are worse films to try emulate.

Shang Chi: another 7/10. It's standard Marvel fare not one of their best but certainly an enjoyable watch. Nice to see Ronny Chieng make it to the big time.

Red Notice

It kinda just does what it says on the box. Reynolds plays yet another version of Reynolds (he hasn’t done anything but this for 10? Years now). Gadot looks great and they move around he limited capabilities pretty well.

Dwayne… he’s big (huge actually) seems like a lovely guy but he’s just got no presence on a screen, theyve also
tried to run him as the romantic lead in this in a twist so telegraphed it may as well be on the poster and he just caaaaaant do it.

It’s fine if you’re nursing a 4 month old the day of his vaccinations and wanna tune out if you’re after a good movie look elsewhere.

5/10
I disagree, I really enjoyed it.

Nice fun, mindless movie where you can turn it on, have a laugh and not worry about things for 2 hours or so.

Watched it today and enjoyed it. I reckon the casting was spot on. All the main actors have great screen presence and can deliver their lines convincingly. I agree a little about the lack of tension building. Events sometimes happened out of the blue rather than suspenseful moments leading to a surprise outcome. The soundtrack was mostly good with a couple of jarring moments.

All in all it was a good story well told.

6/10
Some examples of what i mean by the story/plot points suffering without a career-scriptwriter.....

-- the bounty hunter's presence was not explained at all, but it would seem likely that either the Governor sic'd him onto the gang because he was growing impatient with the police Captain's failures, or, the police captain hired him originally but because he washed out into drunkenness and procrastination he resorted to the plan B (brother). But in that characters existense in the story, a whole dynamic could've become a fascinating element adding intrigue and tensions. Whether he was hired by the Governor and the Captain didnt know, whether hired by the Governor and the Captain did know but wanted to one-up the Governor. Or, whether the Captain by his own volition hired him, and when the brother found out (after a much better bar room scene) it created an ongoing tussle between the brother and bounty hunter, and the brother and the captain -- impetus to see thru the Captain's promises and distrust him, the younger brother's fatality thus made to be a direct order from the Captain, not the Governor, painting the Captain even nore ruthless, but also making that ending pack a greater punch (message of forgiveness) when the brother helped protect the wife and not allow the Captain to die either. Instead, sympathy for Captain could be used on a tension with the Governor reharding his wife (see below)....

-- there seemed to be a possible thing going on between the Governor and the Captain's wife. Was it just that she was alone and lonely so much, nagging for homely romantic attention, and the Governor starting to hit on her, of the same class structure, or, was it perhaps they knew each other before she got married to the Captain, sweethearts in England before being shipped off to Australia separately. There was a whole dynamic there that could've been explored, added to the tensions between not just the Governor and Captain, but also if that Bounty Hunter was hired by the Governor against the Captain's wishes, so yet another intrigue added.

-- the younger brother was such an annoying character, all he did was scream and whelp the whole movie thru. Wasted character. Could've been written better, given some key part to the growing tensions. Perhaps he was happy to rat out his middle brother because he admited his older brother far more, idolized him for being such a nasty gangster, wanted to be like him, but the middle brother got in the way, trying to save him from that life against his wishes. So more tensions and intrigue between the middle and older brother when they finally cross paths again.

-- not enough of an indigenous angle written into the story. Something stronger could've been said in this movie of.the mistreatment of them in this period. Perhaps there were systematic killings of them going on, land also being stolen off them rich in iron ore etc, and the older brother -- shown as a horrific villain for much of the film -- is shown in the end as being actually the good guy, fighting for their cause, happy to inflict pain and suffering on the privileged upper class white folk of the town holding power structures.

Those things all mixed in to the story would've lifted The Proposition from a good Australian production to a truly great one, greatest ever, possibly even in a list of the best Westerns ever made from anyone.

Was a neat idea by a musician turning his hand to movie writing, but thus showing up his great limitations. Didn't push and develop the idea, the story, plot points to depths and areas of greater cultural meaning, but even as a story per se, so much more potential drama, memorable scenes, character interactions, lines, etc, that could've become potentially iconic

The Land of Steady Habits (2018, Netflix): A middle aged family drama starring Australian Ben Mendelsohn (who's great btw). One of those films you really enjoy but forget about once it finishes. 6.5/10.

Mudbound (2017, Netflix): Hits plenty of Oscar-bait beats - WW2 era, people dealing with demons after said war, Racial inequality, lots of narration etc. Personally it didn't fully hit. The first half seems turgid whilst the plot advances like well tread checkmarks that was predictable. There's also way too many night scenes where you can't see what is happening. Don't get me wrong it's good (well acted, impact of injustice hit hard, gritty setting was appreciated) but it didn't reach the lofty heights I was hoping for. 6/10.

Shang Chi and the legend of the ten rings
Mostly follows the marvel origin path but opposed to Thor (with real world
Norse mythology interwoven) this does the ancient mysticism of China in a way that’s really interesting and fresh. Simu Liu is physically capable of doing one shot martial arts and fight scenes so they are above the marvel grade imo. Really enjoyed it 8/10

A quiet place part 2

Jesus Christ the edge of my seat is ****ed from being worn out. They somehow manage to renew all the tension and add some new elements. 9/10

Might be controversial, Tom Cruise is one of the best actors of modern theatre. Very consistent and good quality movies and produced alot of films over a large period of time.
Agree but would like to see him take on an ambitious project soon that really flexes his acting muscles. He’s definitely capable, but seems to be stuck in the bankable action movie cycle for now. Which is fine, the movies are good and entertaining but it would be cool to see him in a drama film again.

I am a big Tom Cruise fan, this is spot on. He's great. The Firm is another excellent film he is in.

It astounds me that people still pay money for his films, knowing how much money subsequently goes to the Church of Scientology, and the atrocities that they commit.
That is a fair point actually. In a vacuum, Cruise is easy to love as an actor, and his films, and at least he doesnt ever seem to be subliminally spruiking CoS. But if we're to think about those sorts of things, same could be said with Tom Hanks who is worse, always subliminal s**t and has bad association with hollywood pedos etc. Same with Spielberg. If we start to factor all that off-screen stuff, we'd not want to support most or all of Hollywood movies.

He's nearly 60 so there will come a time when he can't do the action roles any more. He might decide to work with some left field directors.

You've got to love his body of work. Edge of Tomorrow, Minority Report, Oblivion, Vanilla Sky are all great sci-fi. I love both the Jack Reacher movies. Collateral is a classic. So many more.
