In that case it's now a pretty easy decision 👍 Tigers miles in front of both in terms of building a flag list
You might be right. Richmond got lots of draft picks 2 or 3 years before Tassie comes up.

Richmond nailed most of their early picks from 2006 to 2009 before the 2010 draft was dominated by gold coast.

We all know what Richmond did from 2010 to 2020.

No finals in 2010 to 2012.

Finals in 2013 to 2015.

No finals in 2016.

A 4 year contenders window from 2017 to 2020

I would genuinely say we are much closer now than this time last year simply because of the fact the draft will be compromised in 2 years time. We’ve loaded up in a super strong draft so it’s a huge lottery but a damn good start. Still have this funny feeling that the Blues with their top end talent could bounce super hard next year…

Easy to answer. Essendon won one in 2000 with arguably the best singular season team I've seen.

Both clubs (like the WCE) absolutely nowhere near winning another one.

Essendon realised 12 months ago it couldn’t win a flag and have started to try to build the next one.

Carlton haven’t had that realisation yet so I’d say they’re further away.

They’re hanging their hat on yet another messiah, as they do, in Graeme Wright. That rarely ends well.
How exactly are we doing that?

neither really be another 10 year say mid 2030s if they are lucky.
both i think need to go through extensive rebuilds which could go on for say 5 years.
need a start a fresh from the ground up.
with that expect fans memberships dropping off.
once big great clubs just a shell of themselves
its going to take alot of time
i can see both bottom 4 in the next 3-4 years to be honest

You'd have to merge these teams and give them a clean bill of health for them to be a chance at winning the flag.

Something like this:

McGrath (E), McKay (E), Ridley (E)
Redman (E), Weitering (C), Saad (C)
Martin (E), Cerra (C), Acres (C)
Langford (E), McKay (C), Curnow (C)
Williams (C), Wright (E), Caddy (E)

Fol
TDK (C), Cripps (C), Merrett (E)

I/C
Draper (E), Walsh (C), Hewett (C), Parish (E), Caldwell (E)

How exactly are we doing that?

It’s been pretty obvious to anybody watching Carlton play that they are a mess and have been for months.

The players aren’t interested, the coach is totally disengaged and literally trying to hide at the back of the coaches box.

Nothing has been done, no decisions made.

Except one - Wright is coming and we’re going to bring his start date forward.

It’s quite obvious the whole club is on standby mode until one bloke arrives to make all the decisions.

That’s not healthy. One person isn’t going to change everything.

Right... So are we meant to just sit by and accept we're shite instead rather than have another 'messiah' ?

I would have thought bringing on a new CEO to make changes to the footy department and bring in people who can do the jobs required would be exactly what we should be doing no?

There’s some facts here.

As much as Wright coming in will be a positive, more is needed

Best he’s not seen as another messiah

Yep, seems we are going to properly bottom out and get a genuine top end pick and not some mid tier 5-12 that the old regime loved to trade out
Maybe the blues are now looking at 2026 as the bottom season.
2027 onwards is when they’ll want to start seeing improvements, with window opening from 2030

I wouldn't agree with that at all. I've been impressed with the performances of the younger players at Carlton in recent weeks.

Essendon have some decent prospects in their team that have been showing up well also. Both teams have been riddled with injury problems this year as well.

Isn't making the key decisions the general remit of a CEO?

It's a bit weird listening to an Essendon fan go on about messiah complexes, when some of them want the prodigal son himself James Hird back as their coach.😄

Granted i've advocated for Ratts having a second stint as Carlton coach, but Ratts wasn't the one who presided over one of the biggest scandals in Australian sporting history during his tenure as coach!
