the midfield group still goes missing at times/workrate drops off and too much is left for watson to do. less so than in previous years but still too often for them to win the flag this year.

It's less the midfield that was the problem last night (fashionable opinion though that may be) and more a forward line who thought the goals were located around about the MCC toilets.

61 inside 50s.

6 goals.

Says it all.

any team that loses to the worst side in the comp is not winning the flag, doesn't matter how poor you played and Essendon's weakness was highlighted when Crameri is stopped, Hurley is a quite frankly an average player.

Pears is not big enough and Fletcher is old and slow.

Bad luck Essendon as I tipped you would start losing soon but didn't expect it to start against Melbourne.

Actually it's been done more times you can probably count.

Played teams 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th for two top eight wins. Hardly an endorsement of an alleged Premiership contender. Massively overrated.

Yet good enough to be 8 goals ahead of you guys 1st half, with a few players out.

Never thought we'd win the premiership this year, that's silly. But we're as good as most sides in it.

So in your eyes Richmond are not a premiership contender? Scratch that, so West Coast Eagles last year were not a premiership threat just because they finished last the year before?

Please use your think brain mate.

I very much doubt we will win the flag but if we make the top 4 with a fit and healthy list then who knows, especially this year where there aren't really any powerhouse teams. The loss to Melbourne was disappointing but still we are 8-2 (the same as the rest of the top 4) and the world hasn't ended due to 1 loss. I think also the people saying that Essendon are overrated because of our easy draw are going to be disappointed when we prove once again that we tend to do better against decent sides not worse.

FWIW I think our main aim should be to win at least one final this year. If we can achieve that at least, I'll be happy that we are still heading in the right direction even if we can't take out the premiership.

Overrated because we've beaten the teams put in front of us bar 2?

Makes sense.

3 of those teams are 4-6 and only 2 games outside the 8. And the way this season is going, who knows what will happen with those teams.

8-2 with a losing average margin of a whopping 3.5 points. People seem to forget we were 14th in 2010. Jumped 6 spots in 2011, and have shown continued improvement in 2012. I don't think any Essendon supporter is bullish about their chance at the flag in 2012. We'll give it a good try in 2013.

not if Fletcher retires. The others back there are spuds and Pears is not big enough. You also have no genuine power forward apart from this untried Crameri who's totally unproven and will be tested in finals unlike some who have at least two or three genuine key forwards who have proven themselves. Oh, and don't tell me you got Hurley because he got offended by Jack Watts on Saturday and is the most overrated player next to Rioli.

Well we've had the 2nd least points scored against us after 10 rounds. Must be doing something right down back, right? Pears is horribly out of form and needs a good run in the reserves. Fletcher is not a worry, we've got Carlisle as his replacement already playing some fantastic football.

I'm sure why you are comparing Hurley to Watts or Rioli?. A little confusing.

Hurley has been pretty average this season to date. No question about it. But at least he makes a contest and brings the ball to the ground even when he is out of form. Would love a stat on his score involvements/assists (anyone). Ideally if Gumbleton's form continues in the VFL in the next month, I'd love Hurley to move back & Gumby to play forward

The only way for Crameri to 'prove' himself is actually play finals first. Were Hawkins and Pods 'finals proven' players leading up to the 2011 finals series?

so how you feeling right now Essendon fans!!!! You dont want to lose this game against the Swannies because your top 4 chance looks as shifty as your predictions.

I don't think many people seriously thought the Bombers were a genuine top 4 chance despite their strong start to the season? Or did people genuinely believe they were?

IMO, they are definitely a top 8 side but IMO top 4 is out of their depth at the moment.

Sure, they have convincingly had some terrific wins against some of the premier sides and they have done incredibly well with what they've got and lets be honest here, they aren't the most talented list in the competition or even in the top echelon of talent either but Jimmy Hird has them functioning at a competitive level weekly which is a real credit to the entire group. They get a relatively even spread of contribution from everyone which keeps them in most games without that genuine star power.

The problem with that is though, that eventually, that "peak" so to speak will waver and at times fall away.

This is when the "stars" would pick up the slack and carry you over the line but at Essendon Jobe Watson is the only genuine superstar they have which makes it incredibly difficult. Need to find a couple more genuine superstars. Have a couple of super young players developing really well i.e. Zaharakis, Hurley and Ryder but they need them to reach that next level quicker to support their champion captain.
