In the peak fortnight of the outbreak to date (25 August to 7 September), the COVID-19 case rate among 2-dose vaccinated people was 49.5 per 100,000 while in unvaccinated people it was 561 per 100,000, a more than 10-fold difference. The rates of COVID-19 ICU admissions or deaths peaked in the fortnight 8 September to 21 September at 0.9 per 100,000 in 2-dose vaccinated people compared to 15.6 per 100,000 in unvaccinated people, a greater than 16-fold difference.

Look they can be excused one by one but taken collectively, along with the unnecessarily brutal treatment of some by police etc there has been a breach of trust which goes a long way to explaining why a percentage of the population don’t buy their bullshit.

Yeah protesters were brutalised by the police just like Joel Selwood got hit high.

You learn a little history.
I want my state and country not to become like that emerging market country your wife is from.

History, from where? dubious youtube sources?

You want a government who declares a national emergency and urges all the citizens to take action to negate the emergency as much as possible.....unless they don't want to?

The government told travellers to self isolate . Some of them went to parties.
The government tried to force quarantine in hotels. There were some balls ups , but also travellers doing anything they could to try to escape and spread the virus.
You had all sorts of socialising going on when we were all told to isolate. Then we complain the lockdown is going on too long.

They've been soft as s**t, and you are going around acting like its some totalitarian plot.

He want's Tucker Carlson to tell him what to do.

Interesting fact coming out from Omicron, in effect the virus has caught the common cold making it less potent for illness.

Omicron symptoms are mild, particularly in non-vaccinated.

Lateral flow tests are effective when used > 1 day after infection.

Omicron in South Africa has gone from 0.9% in October to 96.3% in December. This will happen across the globe.

There has been a small increase in hospitalisation. But the vast majority of patients in hospital who have tested positive are there for some other reason.

Why are you replacing things I have written with alternatives that you find easier to rebut? It’s pretty lazy.

You don't want your State / Country to become like a country that didn't do enough to deal with the pandemic, whilst simultaneously complaining the country did a lot to deal with the pandemic.

Is there anyone with expertise here who can comment on the likelihood or orherwise that Omicron may provide protection against Delta and other variants?

I think it's too early for anyone to tell for sure

Great if it works out that way.

What do you mean by protection?
I think I heard that Omicron will be more widespread than Delta but being milder will cause less sickness. Perhaps it will help the vaccinated person to resist Delta.*

*It’s late and I’ve just watched the Stars snatch a win and I’ve no idea what I’m talking about :$

Yeah, it's just that protection is open to interpretation. ~99% of people recover from covid, so we have "protection" already. If he means those susceptible to death from covid, that's probably going to be an impossible question to answer as there's too many variables.

I mean, by getting the Omicron strain, ones chances of getting a more dangerous strain such as Delta are reduced.

One of the original observations about the omicron, was that it was a significantly different mutation. There was a concern that the immune system wouldn't work with the same antibodies as other covid strains.
That might mean that you could catch Omicron after already having had Covid19.
The opposite might also be true i guess.

They don't know yet.

When you say omicron is mild in non vaccinated you need a link and context
Eg do you mean mild relative to delta in unvaccinated
Or mild in unvaccinated compared to in vaccinated (which would’be bs but is a way of reading the unattributed sentence)
Hospitalisation rising in South Africa but likely due to rising cases alone ie not yet seeming more dangerous

You make very good points.

PCR tests are very unreliable. The rate of cases largely depends on how many tests you carry out. Not all labs can distinguish between the different strains and in reality people might have a mixture of different strains and the lab finds the one they are looking for.

As regards hospital data
In City of Tshwane Metro (where omicron is centred), from 14 November-8 December 2021, 1,633 admissions and 39 deaths were reported from the public and private health sectors. Among patients who already had a hospital outcome and were no longer still in hospital, during the early second wave 66% of COVID-19 admissions were severe, during the early third wave 67% were severe, and during the early fourth wave, 31% were severe. It must be noted that severity data has several limitations at the early phase of the wave when numbers are small, mild patients are more likely to be admitted as a precaution, patients are diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 incidentally when admitted for other reasons, and because there has not been sufficient follow-up time for severity and outcomes to have accumulated.

So it appears that there is currently less than half the severe rate of cases than during the second and third waves. And if mild cases are being admitted as precaution there might be more reason to be optimistic.

The number of Covid hospital deaths in Gauteng have gone from 2.5 in the last 15 days to 4.2. Nothing to panic about, but early days.
