"Dream" outcome that is at least a remote possibility is Aish at 6 and then Scharenberg sliding to 10 due to clubs being wary of his feet. Give it a few years and a SA State of Origin side would be the Collingwood show!

Given that the above combination is unlikely, I also like the sound of Scharenberg at 6 and Salem/Bontempelli at 10.
Of those two, I'm currently slightly favouring Salem due to the reportedly elite foot skills. McCarthy looks like he has a very high ceiling but I don't know that the untried nature of his game warrants sacrificing the tried and tested class of the
mids that look likely to be around. Would be funny if someone else took him and Caaaarlton missed out again.

Scharenberg just sounds like he fills what will clearly be a hole, both positionally and in terms of backline leadership. Reid, Brown, Keeffe, Frost, Williams, Scharenberg, Sinclair, Sidebottom and the luxury of a swingman who happens to be an AAA... Not bad.

I'd be very happy to see us hand Thorp the lifeline at 67. Super impressed with the way it sounds like he's reinvented himself. Plenty of ability and now has the maturity and leadership to go with it. If you don't think that some blokes just take longer to get their head in the right space to maximise their potential, just ask Chris Tarrant what he thinks.

If not Thorp then I'd like whoever Hine thinks is the best available. Preferably not a KPP... 2014 is the year to load up on talls, plus it sounds like Darcy will be a pie.

Not normally into the commercial stuff (but what the hell, it is draft week).

It's good but below your usual standard.

I've always enjoyed your brushstroke (someone will pay me back here:p ) but this is lacking a little flair, where is the aggression?

Overall I think you need to go back to your original brush flair plus the passion man! Where is the passion!:p

Artistic freedom out the window. Commercial pressures & time frames have severely impacted my ability to be one with the canvas.
I should never have sold out. My hand is rigid & the creative juices ebbing away.
I need a couple of years in a cave in Bhutan.

Agreed. Two best players in the draft after Boyd. Kelly there abouts also.
Salem is as good as Sheed (quicker, better kick).. they are both so balanced they glide over the ground like a Cullen.. anyway we can't go screwing WC after they gave us their pick 6 o_O

Sheed will be the higher disposal getter when he comes to the real stuff against men imo. Sheed also a better leader..

three guesses who this is reminds me of scharenberg in some ways..

Given that over the years maybe only half of the first round picks turn out to be solid players can we only expect 3 out of our 6 first rounders over the last 2 years (I include Adams) will turn out to be successful?

No, because teams like Melbourne regularly screw up all of their first round picks, meaning that to even it out, some teams get all of them right ;)

Obviously what is a solid player is subjective but on a games played basis for 2001 to 2009 (giving more leeway for later years as they haven't had same opportunity to play lots of games) there are 162 first rounders and about 44 duds which is 27%. Drops to 18 of 90 duds (20%) for top 10 picks.

I think Grundy & Adams have shown enough to be solid or better (barring injury) and I'd be confident that from Kennedy, Broomhead and 6&10 we will add at least 2 solid players.

Interestingly Carlton 0/9, Saints 0/9 & Eagles 0/10 are best at avoiding duds (if you don't include Hampson (63 games and still going), Clarke (85 games), Sampi (78), whilst Freo 4/8 and Swans 4/7 are worst.

Pies are 3 duds from 8 picks but have done well with each of their last 5.

What do these figures mean?

1st figure is number of duds picked in 1st round, 2nd is number of 1st round picks the club has had.
Ok, so on those figures neither Carlton or Saints have picked a first round dud?
Interesting, what do you call a dud?
Matthew Watson?
Kane Lucas?

X Clarke?
R Clarke?
T Lynch?

Dud was probably not the best choice of words - look back at the context - it started with Neilk commenting only about half of 1st rounders turn out being solid players, I used dud out of laziness but it's stronger than not being solid.

I then talked about 2001 to 2009 (which excludes Watson drafted in 2010) as I was trying to avoid the subjectivity of player evaluations by basing it on games played. Obviously there is still some subjectivity with 2008 & 09 players as they haven't had the same opportunity to play lots of games as those drafted earlier. Lucas has only played 35 games in 4 seasons, which isn't what I'd want from a 1st rounder but with him still on the list it's probably unfair to call him a dud.

Xavier Clarke managed 106 games, again I'd want more from 1st rounder but by no means a dud.
Raphael Clarke managed 85 and was mentioned in my 'disclaimer'.

Lynch has only played 29 games and has gone to Adelaide but those 4 goals against the Pies this year sticks in my mind enough that I'm certainly not going to call him a dud. Young enough at 23 and with 17 games this year that he has plenty of time to carve out a decent career.
