Like Tippetts big contract?

Qld boy went to Sydney

Naughton isn’t a fantasy
We had COLA, players didn't lose out as much on accepting comparable money to come to us. We also didn't have to overpay to retain as much. Tippett also had family in Sydney. Did I say Naughton was a fantasy?

It's hard for me to give beatson credit for logan. We shouldn't have Him.

North's incompetence meant they didn't realise not bidding in Campbell ensured we got 2 players inside the top 5 and one of those for free.

North should have bidded on Campbell given we had the very next pick, they didn't which meant we got logan and Campbell.

Pure dumb luck on our behalf

People are happy to judge recruiters when other factors conspire against players post-draft, so while we had some luck, he still made the pick, an early pick, which some seem to think he isn't as good with.

We also don't know North's thinking. Maybe they genuinely rated Phillips first, maybe they thought we might baulk at 4 for Campbell, maybe they thought Logan was a flight risk.

Phillips will be a gun , killed us the other.

Will Logan actually be a KF you build around , I’m not sold on that. Not saying for a second he won’t be good and is good now but I see him a lead up forward similar to a Gunston and ( crows ) lynch type.

Will Phillips in Round 10 2023 NM v Sydney had 16 disposals of which 14 were handballs.
He also had a NEGATIVE metres 'gained' of 16 metres. The only player other than the subs to have a loss in metres gained. He played 77% of game time.

I'm not sure than equates to 'killing us'.

Plenty of those handballs were to the free Roo pushing up for the rebound. Richmond's mids used to do this with Houli, Short, Baker etc.

It's good clearance work.

The club would have a fair idea by now if Stephens is staying or not.

What to do with him depends in part on form, but also on the likelihood of him staying.
At least he'd be servicable while giving a spell every third week to Gulden and Sheldrick - which is how we should be playing them sto they don't hit the Hanners career wall way too early. Personally I think Stephens has untapped potential that our team hasn't utilized, even if we are trading him on, playing him where he could be effective will boost his value.

We weren’t getting buddy either

I think you can get McKay
Not sure we'd want a forward that can't kick a goal. Certainly not for the draft capital we'd be spending. I'd literally rather try Buller for a year than spend a first on Mackay.f

Basically the rumour is that we massively overpay for Carlton's backup ruckman who is out of contract and give away our All Australian Small Forward who is contracted for another 5 years.
Such a load of crap. In the time since Carlton last played finals, we've been in 3 GFs including last year. And that finals appearance was a technicality!

How are we still not a destination club? Even Brisbane attracted Neale and Dunkley.

Phillips will turn out fine but there's no way he has a higher ceiling than McDonald.
He's played 24 games and McDonald has played 33.

The talk of players' "ceilings" makes no sense to me with young players.

There are just as many players who never live up to their "ceilings" as there are players who end up exceeding their "ceilings".

Who even knows what any of their ceilings can be or will be.

Players that are handball first and don't kick goals tend to be thought of as having a low ceiling in modern footy.

Looking at the Eagles makes me think we should absolutely not give Reid another year .

We need blokes on the list who actually play

If you carry too many blokes that don't play it can turn ugly real real quick.

How many high risk players can we carry?

Our reserves side is already full of top-ups.

The Eagles keep handing out contract extensions to old blokes who never actually set foot on the field

And it's hurting them badly

Was once said about Franklin too

Do you think we are not attractive enough for them?

Money?
Yes, money is a big part of it. We have to pay overs to retain, and if we offer similar to a club from Vic, or someone's home state, why would they take our offer, when they get more value elsewhere.

Draft picks too, we often don't have the greatest selections, so unless we're going for a free agent (Buddy) or delisted/PSD (Tippett), we face an uphill battle.
