HELP ME! — Sinking Selwood

Ranking points: 95 (Lowest since debut season)

Disposals: 23.1 (Lowest since debut season)

Kicking efficiency: 58.2% (Lowest of career)

Uncontested possessions: 10 (Lowest of career)

Clearances: 7.2 (Highest of career)

Contested possession rate: 57% (Highest of career)

Hard to argue with the article looking at those numbers. Basically he's getting the ball for himself and for others, but less is coming his way via team mates. Then there's the fact that he's being scrapped while our other mids are seemingly unwilling to assist and get physical. We also lack a tagger with any physicality besides an arm across the front of body.

2016 Nice to have midfield - Stanley, Selwood, Dangerfield, Blicavs & other HARD body (tagger / ball winner).

Its clear Sel needs help. And if you look at the injury list there is a lot there.
Stanley - A ruck who can feed him.us the ball.
Bartel - A clever MF who while losing a bit still knows his way around the contest and the guts.
Kelly - See Jimmy.
Caddy - Not giving enough clearance stuff out of the middle to give opposition coaches need to target him instead.
Bundy - Liked him or loathe him now - he added to our MF group in and under.
Guthrie - Still getting a grip on things in the MF.
Duncan - enough said - probably our best MF next to Sel.

That is a LOT of missing talent.

But Caddy and Guthrie aren't missing.

But Caddy and Guthrie aren't missing.

In terms of their full potential compared to a Bartel and Chapman as examples of the level of MF's we have had before them, yes they are.

Im not knocking or criticising them, but opposite coaches had to prepare for a lot more in our MF in years prior. Now it is a different group with the same expectations and something has to give. And we see that - losses to Melbourne's MF.
In listing Cads and Guth im just saying that they have more to give as they get better as players.

Guthrie is not an inside midfielder, not sure why anyone keeps suggesting he is? The guy is clearly playing out of position ATM.

People might need to point that out to Chris Scott then. He's been playing as a midfielder for all of last year and all of this one. Last year he averaged more clearances than Caddy or Horlin-Smith. Whatever we may think, the club seem committed to putting him there.

Not necessarily. Guthrie started 2015 in the middle, but the club pushed him back and put Duncan in there, which was VERY effective for the team until Duncan got injured. Guthrie was not only being beaten severely by his opponents, he was struggling to get his hands on it against good opposition. He went back in once Duncan came out.

Caddy and Horlin-Smith have only really ever had part time roles in the mid-field in previous years, Guthrie was obviously seen as the one most likely to improve considerably in 2015, which hasn't happened. Again, this is why GFC are persisting with him, they see Guthrie as a midfield leader and star perhaps? Whether that happens or not remains to be seen. I'm of the opinion that the role is beyond him, physically and talent wise. Better fit for half back.

you have been very vocal about Guthrie and while I do not agree with you, your opinions are certainly not wrong either.

One facet of his game is his explosiveness. We are fairly one dimensional in the middle right now. Not many line breakers and that is an area in which Guthrie has helped us to some degree.
I cannot see what else we can do unless the club were to finish very low this year and secure a host of first round draft picks. A couple of highly rated midfielders and only then, can we possibly climb back up the ladder in the coming years.
If we don't take a nose dive, I think Guthrie, Horlin-Smith and Jansen will have to be persisted with no matter what.

Or are you putting all your eggs into the jay Clark basket?

Selwood mentioned it unprompted on the FootyShow also.

The fact that the club has not made a statement isn't a good thing, they obviously want to get Dangerfield and will do what it takes, I've seen nothing to suggest that this is more than the senior players crying about an external earning more than they are.

My initial point that Selwood's opinion on this will only do this deal harm is valid. He should be keeping his trap shut and doing what he's employed by the club to do, play footy.

Id say Selwood does plenty of playing footy.

As for the overall pay structure, they can still do a deal over 5 years that pays him 800k per year, front loaded like 1.25 x2, 3 x 500k to break the RFA match possibility and still get it done.

To be fair it's obviously not one poster's loony opinion - the article states it quite clearly. Whether it plays out like that remains to be seen, but we scream for evidence on this forum and a link to a news article is pretty clear as far as that goes.

Has it been reported accurately? Maybe, maybe not. That's a different issue. What can't be argued is that it has been reported like that, because it obviously has.
