I'm sorry. I'm compelled to post the following image. It has to be done because simply a picture is worth a thousand words. At least it will turn Ohhh Errol on. :stern look

I am reminded of how we scapegoated Pratt and Simpson for the chicken "sexual exploitation".

I just hope that in future with incidents like these we support our people in the face of the AFL and media if their whinging is unjustified, which is most of the time.

I think the club probably know this as indicated by the defensiveness with Majak, but you've gotta find a balance between satisfying the media and supporting your guys. The key IMO is just to be honest about a situation and secondly have a response/punishment that is positive, informed and fair.

A couple of interesting tid-bits i picked up from Demetriou on Fox's 'On The Couch' last night:
- He said he categorically played no part in Rendell getting sacked/resigning......What rubbish, when he said in a media conf the other day (and he knew it was Rendell at that time) that the Recruiter better look for a new job.
- He continously said Misfud instead of Mifsud.....obviously 'Misfud' is an important person to him

That's patently obvious from your comments.

One of the annoying things about BF is that people feel they have to pass judgement on matters about which they have insufficient understanding.
Fair enough, but are you suggesting you have some more inside knowledge than what has been already portrayed in the media including last night, which I watched by the way?

I hope you do if your going to call me out on it.

I pass comment simply on what I see in the media and draw my own conclusions from that. Yeah its likely to be a slanted view, but I've seen this sort of thing play out plenty of times, indeed often in day to day circumstances (there is a large indigenous community where I live) and Rendell, although he strikes me as being well meaning is again typical of Baby Boomers in his general attitude towards many things.

Watched the interview and found myself silently wishing when Caro was basically calling him a liar that Rendell would turn around and call her on her shoddy journalism.

No inside knowledge, just following the media (maybe a little more closely than you, maybe not).

Unlike Caro and (seemingly) yourself, I'm not willing to allow Demetriou's demonstrated dishonesty to pass as the facts in this case, when the full context was plausibly explained by Rendell and my judgement is that his version is the true one. He's clearly not racist, and in context, neither was the comment. If you're prepared to swallow the AFL propoganda that he is racist, then good luck to you. You already demonstrate a flippant prejudice with your Baby Boomers generalisation.

For what it's worth, my view is that Rendell is the only one who can hold his head up in the whole affair. Demetriou and Caro come across as low-life hypocrites (i.e. stayed true to form), Trigg is obviously a pea-heart, and I'm puzzled by Mifsud's disappearing act.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not all fired up about this, and I'm not trying to get stuck into you. What I do hate is the artificial empire-building agenda run by the AFL executive, perpetuated by cynical manipulation of facts and blatant misinformation when it suits them. I hate it because clubs like ours are the ones on the wrong end of it, as they pander to the big and powerful clubs.

Honestly LTK I have no idea why your pontificating over this so much.

Whatever the context of Rendells comment, it was still stupid. Especially given the current political climate around racism and especially given the AFL's stance and the subject.

That is the only point I made and the only point I really give a shit about in this whole mess.

He got canned in the end because he was a dumbass. The AFL only care about their image and if he was to stupid to realise this then it was only a matter of time for him anyway. He is better of out of it, and it seems like he agrees going by his interview last night.

This is one of the things that pisses me off most, the fact that employers/clubs are now scared to back their own employees/players because of the political fallout and public perception from what is reported in the media, whether it is warranted or not.

I was also reminded of it by this article yesterday.

I wish Adelaide had shown as much loyalty as the CBA.

To thicken the plot a little, it seems, if what I heard on SEN this afternoon is correct, the discussion between Matty and Mifsud took place some two months ago and yet only came to light now. Why???? Why so long????

I think it is an absolute disgrace that a good man like Matty Rendell has been crucified like this.

^^^^^

He made the comment in January. There was some as yet unnamed AFL official in the vicinity but Matt R can't remember if he was there when the comment was made.

Mifsud repeated the comment recently when prompted by Honest Andy. After Hird and Roos predicted draft difficulties for indigenous players, followed by the Jurrah business, Andy was after other examples of difficulties faced by indigenous players and Mifsud volunteered it.

Rendell was dumb to warn Mifsud of the possibility of race-based selection without making his own position crystal clear (as Husk says) but I don't think he was being a racist.

Cowro and Fat smelt blood in the water and the facts became irrelevant to them and Andy was free to hang Rendell out to dry. Andy seems to love to make an example of someone, anyone.

While I agree Vlad and Co. have been far to heavy handed in this, Rendell basically comes across as a bit of a dumbass IMO.

No doubt his comment was off the cuff, but the fact he would make it given the current climate of political correctness speaks volumes of his stupidity, and perhaps a little of his generation and their lack of understanding and empathy.

Pretty obvious too, that the reason his explanation was so long winded was that no matter how you spin it, it sounds bad. Would he have said it in the presence of an indigenous person? I doubt it.

Sorry Husk but I think you're off the mark here. For starters Rendell and Mifsud ate mates from way back and he was making a point to his mate. If anything he is trying to help the indigenous cause but fat cats like Dementriou saw it as an opportunity to further their own agenda and this isn't the first time Dementriou has done this.

Secondly Mifsud is indigenous so he did say it in the presence of an aborigine. What irks me is the third person who came into that meeting late took offence at the comment when he wasn't even present for the whole conversation so he missed the whole context. But hey he was offended and told Mifsud he should be too so another wanna be trying to force his opinion when clearly Mifsud wasn't upset by what Rendell said but when fatso Demetriou also weighed in with his hidden agenda, all of a sudden it's an issue.

The facts are that the drop out of young indigenous players is too high and must be addressed and sometimes you need to smack people right between the eyes to make them listen.

Bige you are spot on, thank god for sanity and seeing the situation as it really is.

I personally have known Matt for many years and believe me he is an honest and caring man who does not have a racial bone in his body.

I am utterly appalled by Wilson, Smith and Vlad and many others in the media who have completely taken out of context Matt's desire to stress the urgency of implementing programs for indigenous youth so they stay in the AFL system to have long and successful careers.

Talk about taking things out of context to suit your needs. And as for those who pass an opinion on the matter without having listened to Matt's version of events in entirety, I am flabbergasted for words, because how can one give an opinion, on anything, if one is not fully informed.

Talk about bang your head against a brick wall in frustration, this is enough to give someone a heart attack, Vlad is out for his scalp and has got it.

If you have not already done so, please take the time to read Mark Robinsons piece on page 78 of today's HS, it sums up the chain of events very succintly whilst indicating sinister undertones.

For goodness sake Matt is not ignorant of indigenous matters but he has highlighted the ignorance of Vlad and his awareness of indigenous and other matters.

If dear Jim Stynes had not lost his battle with life today, I think there would have been much more to come out of this matter.
Vale Jim Stynes, a life taken far too soon and suffered far too much.

Life is precious, celebrate each day, especially if you have good health and always learn and give something back to others.

If you want to blame anyone blame the media.

I doubt anything would have happened if they had not got a hold of the "story".

Many of us footy tragics watch and listen to everything footy related. Unfortunately sometimes it includes the AFL's own mouthpiece Harpy Wilson. At least you know with that Gargoyle that there's an agenda behind it's hollow eyes. Talk about heartless tonight..............I was hoping Matty Rendell would leap the desk when he was becoming fired up and yelling at her.

Perfect example how this woman works is for all to see in this segment of the show.

After how Matt Rendell goes through with intricate detail how the events happened (January 2012) well before Roos´s interview with Jim Hird on TV I may highlight.

The 1st question wilson asks Rendell why did he say it ?? I nearly fell off my chair when she asked it!! She is no doubt in my mind that she is employed or is some how being paid in some way from the AFL. Or at the very least some deal is struck where she has a "headsup" well before other journos in Melbourne on certain topics.

In finishing up it will interesting to see later on down the future where clubs will be frightened not to draft indigenous players for the fear of bad press. Or dare I say it follow Sth Africa´s policy early on in the selection criteria with their cricket team. Where theyre forced have at least one indigenous player in the team.

Most people are racists in some form they may not know it and have good intentions etc but there is something that is instilte in most of us on this planet. As I stated earlier Rendells comments weren´t in the nature that demeans the indigenous player of past and future.

Trust me people I have lived and worked in other countries and people unwittingly and without knowledge that theyre actually doing it. Do it.

should be ashamed of how disgusting she's just treated rendell.
As usual, doesn't listen to the facts, just grovels around, hissing truffle-hunting pig style, looking for a sensationalist angle. I will never watch that show while she is on it. Makes Thomas likable.

And while we talk about the racism of Rendell, we do not speak about the non-suspension of Jurrah which has suddenly become yesterday's news.

Simply strategy, when attacking one of the clubs which is AFL friendly for inaction on a player open a diversionary topic on an interstate club.

And everyone is happy ever after. Pass me the valium.

Strange how Andrew Lovett was sacked after being charged.........career over.then eventually cleared in court.

Then we find Jurrah charged..........guilt or innocence yet to be established........but in this case, no reason for him not to play.

Obviously, race isn't an issue in why one is treated differently to the other. But the inconsistency is odd, surely?

If Rendell's account of the conversation is correct, then all of the above comments would follow naturally.

However, everyone seems to have taken Rendell at face value.

There are good reasons why Rendell would bend the truth to make his comments seem innocuous.

The only person who could categorically put an end to the ride and annoying speculation is Misfud.

However, given he and Rendell have been mates, I don't suppose he will want to give his version of events publically.

For mine, the fact that Musfud has even gone to Demetriou tells me that Rendell's comments were slightly more nefarious than he made out on the tele the other night.

Caroline Wilson is beside the point. Save the murderousness for the dons.

Peace!

That's my take too. I don't know any of them and I wasn't at the meeting. But the fact a guy is passionate in his own defense doesn't carry any weight with me - and I seem to be one of the few who didn't think he made a good case.

I've worked with people who weren't at all vicious but could say seriously offensive things. This is not about worthiness of character, but appropriateness - and alignment to your employer's policies.

Having said all that, I'd have thought counseling and education would have been a more appropriate response than sacking. As someone said yesterday, they wouldn't be allowed to run a process like this with a player - back room staff should have the same rights as employees, to measured disciplinary action, where sacking is a last report for repeated infringements.

I say horrific stuff at work all the time.

I'd make a ripping case for myself if required.

Counselling can't stop you believing what you believe deep down in your soul.

Your mates are right. They're clearly too good for Big Footy and so are you. We are humbled that you graced us with your royal presence this once, but now understand that you need to leave to resume your lofty place in society, ridding the world of evils with your high quality mates. No doubt there's still room right up there on their high horse for you.

We lower human specimens are better for your visit and will always speak fondly of the day you graced our board. It will be difficult, but we'll battle on without you.
