I just hope it means more targets inside 50m so we can kick to hit up a target instead of bombing it in long to our small forwards. There were times that really frustrated me this year.

RTB and the selectors will have the basics to take the next step and improve the team and game plan IMHO .
Hawthorn showed us defensive pressure mixed with scoreboard pressure is a great combination and that is where we have to improve .

The players we have recruited in Sylvia and Gumby will if they are fit enough and learn the RTB game plan \structures to get into our top 22 will improve the performance of the team as a whole .
Hawthorns ability to get the ball off the opposition and keep it makes them the team to beat even without Franklin .

Pavlich needs help and Keps wasn't there so now with the addition of Gumby and or Keps we will be a better team .

Long term we still need to recruit a KPF and a KPB so we must use the draft to recruit and develop our own not for the short term but for the long term as well.

Too many time this year we wher coming out of defence and only had Ballas and Walters to take the big screamers against taller defenders so when our new duo are ready to play this is rectified .

Ross Lyon has proven he is one step ahead of the game in regards to his game plan. Regardless of who we trade for or draft there was always going to be some sort of change to the game plan. Obviously now that we have gumby is means a mix up of the forward line structures along with Sylvia coming in.

Nothing too major will change just some subtleties to keep ourselves ahead of the curve

He missed round 23, as did most of the team. He kicked 1.1 against the cats

Often at times with only Sandi deep forward, we tend to bomb in hope he gets a mark on one of the unsuitable defenders. Having Gumby and Pav allows Freo to be more accountable and hit the targets. Mayne will benefit hugely, Gunston plays on the 3rd or 4th defender and takes the pickings every time Hale/Buddy/Roughead got the best defenders. Don't think the pressure will change too much.. Mayne, Ballas and Walters are the main guys that do those acts. Lyon has regularly stated he wants to average higher points scored as 12th isnt as great when it's Melbourne, St Kilda, GWS and Gold Coast below Freo on that account.

To be fair, SonSon was clearly not 100%.. Wasn't as fluid and slipping pass his man like he did against Sydney two weeks later. Mayne also only kicked 1 for the day (such a crucial one too). As a matter of fact, did Mayne get a goal against Sydney?

No but he scored one of the most unco points in the history of our club, when Walters kicked it into his lap unattended in the goalsquare and he dropped the ball over the line.

Crowley has a rather impressive miss against Hawthorn in Tassie too when we were making our charge, think he linked up with Ballas and he missed from virtually inside the goal square.

Yeah I wouldnt mind that either. I wouldnt mind Sylvia kicking 25-30 goals rotating from the Foward line and midfield. Fyfe, Barlow and Mzungu are capable of kicking 25-30 goals as well.

As for Gumby... With all his injuries, I can hope he can kick 40 goals. But lets be realistic, Freo paid bugger all for an injury prone forward. I would still be happy if we get 30-35 goals and 15-20 games out of him. I dont expect him to kick 4-6 goals a game. But If he kicks 2-3 goals and we still win, we cant complain can we?

Freo have a good forward structure now, its not about the Pav kicking 60-70 goals a year, It about Mayne, Walters, Ballas etc all kicking 30-40 goals each.

When watching gumby play for essendon it seemed like if gumby didn't take the mark then it was a turnover. He was terrible once the ball hit the ground. One wonders whether this will be different because of freos forwards compared to the bombers forwards or whether gumby will improve at keeping the ball in the forward line once it hits the deck. Maybe this is what Lyon was referring to when he said you had to give some to get some.

Sylvia seems a bit forgotten in all this. He could actually be amazing for the team as a whole. His attacking nature will complement our natural defensive style. Much in the same way that danyle pearce's pace complemented the rest of the midfield even though his individual game wasn't exactly sensational. We will be a more rounded team rather than having to sticky tape things together and rely on a supreme defensive effort and small forward line.

Don't get me wrong RTB is the best coach we have ever had in our entire history ,but the support staff MAY have let him down in the grand final and I know he will fix the problem .

1 : Deboer had a melt down in the Sydney game and Neale showed his poise when he came on in both the Sydney and GF games , so he should have started on the bench as a rotation and Dedoer as the Sub in the Grand Final
2 : Ballas within the first 10 minutes should have been sat on the bench to calm down and been spoken too about cooling down and play his normal game assistants Sumich or Kirk one or the other ,who ever responsible needed to act .
3 : Clarke should not have been subbed in the Grand final but thrown up forward to help Pav IMHO.
RTB may have been asked but we may never know if the question was asked of him or offered as advise
This should have been screamed at him by Suma and we won't know if it was till the book comes out.
As I said he will learn and so will the Club as they did for the Geelong game and hiring the charter flight which is what every body said at the end of last year and the 2 Steve's did so HATS OFF to them.

Read through the posts on this thread (as well as others) and the words everyone keeps repeating are OPTIONS and FLEXIBILITY. Frankly I think this is what our new recruits will give us next year first and foremost.

I've read more than just a few credible (and potentially successful) new game-plans on this board that have only emerged thanks to these new additions, and I think that this was part of our problem. Despite RTB talking up our team's versatility last year, I personally don't think it panned out that way - RTB could only wield so many changes in the team at any one point in time as we would end up robbing Peter to pay Paul.

For example, Fyfe's marking power would have been very welcome more often in the forward line last year, but it would have left a big hole in our congested possessions mid-field. I note this only really started to happen more regularly towards the end of the year once Neale started to rack up more inside possessions. Ross wants Son Son in the midfield (a sensible move) but last year having him there cost us a lot of scoring power. Again, this only seemed to happen more frequently once Pav came back into the side and started kicking a few. (Granted, I may be wrong in the above observations - I haven't looked at the stats to see if they support my perceptions or not. I'm speaking more from memory than anything.)

All the above notwithstanding, A greater ability to move players around means far more opportunity to engineer and exploit mismatches around the ground. Assuming both Tabener and Morra also start to come good next year, then that greater depth and flexibility makes it much harder for other teams to both plan for and play against us.

I'm not convinced by your arguement due to the fact that De Boers performance in the Sydney game should have been caused concern about his mental state in a big game and his dealing with his nerves as it was his 100th game .
Ballas doesn't have a great record of playing in Melbourne .
When he started to run harder and try harder it was obvous to anyone at the ground he was going too hard and needed to sit down and calm down .
If the runner hadn't been able to get him calmed down and play to the RTB game plan then the forwrd coach ie Sumich should have taken action and not have him continue to play . He should have been benched so that Suma could get in his ear .
Neale showed as that he is very mature and he handles pressure better than most .
In both finals games when he came on he stayed with the basics and didn't get phased by the ocassion
Clarke was not having a good day is the ruck but when Clarkson subed his ruckman and we were strugling up forward thats where Clarke should have gone to help Pav by getting between him and Lake

I'm not saying that RTB should take all the heat on this one but SUMICH should as the forward coach .
