It don't matter who we play forward.

If we continue to bring the ball forward at a snails pace and expect our key forwards to consistently mark in situations where they are outnumbered we are set for a looooong season.

It's an interesting, but incorrect, observation. Drew works very hard - he does a stack of running. The stat about Hansen and Majak covering more ground in a quarter has been pulled right out of the clacker.

Drew's problem at the moment is not work rate, it's not holding marks and not converting. Two outta three ain't good.

I work very hard to please myself, doesn't mean anyone would want to pay to see it happen or that I can call myself a professional.

A professional is someone who is effective at their job, not just a hard worker. Ineffective hard workers are called amateurs.

So there is effective workrate and there is ineffective workrate. Hansen works hard and gets in good position to take intercept marks, and he takes tons of them. Petrie often works to get in a position he is not a realistic option for the ball and is expending a lot of effort engaging with the opposition which under 2014 interpretation is almost free license to scrag.

He needs to work harder at losing his man on the move before then making a strong hard presentation for the ball. He does it now and then but not often enough. He spends a lot of time outside of the forward 50, that might be working hard in someone's definition but if you the full forward you need to be inside the forward 50 and deep, so when you make your lead you are at a reasonable range from goal.

More importantly, if you only get a few chances per game you have to make the most of them. Wright didn't get the arse because he was no good defensively or because he couldn't find the ball, he was given the arse because he failed to kick those momentum shifting goals from dead in front and Drew is in the same position. We just don't have as many forwards as we do mid sized flankers.

I have a feeling that Petrie's form will turn around when Tarrant is back or we bite the bullet and play Hansen as the third tall. He gets no support whatsoever from Currie or Daw. Understandably the opposition puts no time into them. I'm not even sure that Daw could mark it if he was just left to roam free. We had plenty of opportunities to win that game on Sunday. Has bugger all to do with the balance between defence and attack. The problem was we squandered most of them on Daw.

Daw has no confidence and is afraid of the ball. He's happy to attack a marking contest or a player with the ball but apart from that he's pretty much running away. Needs to start assuming some responsibility for what happens around him.

HAHA, yeah look I got the gist of the post myself, but again and am unsure how many times someone needs to say this, he's only played eight games and probably between five and six full ones.

Am not sure how many players of his size have come in and dominated from day one?

You watch him at VFL level and there's no doubt he's more confident.

Scared is the wrong word, lacking confidence is probably closer to the mark, but again most eight game players lack it.

I'm confident we'll have a very good 2nd ruck/slash fwd for many years.

We need to play to Majak's strengths and boy oh boy his strengths are strong.

taking ten metres of the kicks in his direction would be a great start.

I wonder whether if it would be worthwhile swapping Hansen and Petrie in periods of games where required. eg) Gold Coast.

there's no doubt Hansen is a great mark, and while he has his confidence up, I think it may be prudent to send him forward when required.

Hansen is not a great mark as a forward though. He is better dropping back and sideways and has been since day 1.

He is playing well in defense and is not the answer to our fwd woes, which in fact are more to do with our gameplan than the fwds themelves (IMO)

3. He is choosing to engage the defender rather than backing his judgement of the ball or timing on the lead.

4. He has lost his speed. He has about as much get up and go as a Volvo, has completely lost his intial burst which means he is getting no seperation from his opponents.

5. Agility is dwindling. Previously it wasnt tht bad but as soon as the footy hits the deck nowadays you can pretty much rule him out of the contest.

I don't think he is physically impaired since 2012. He hasn't had a year off so probably doesn't feel as fresh, I think there are a lot of contributing factors to him being no good, most are above the shoulders and problems with the game plan and generally poor amount of ball going forward and poor standard of delivery.

I think he needs to fix the goal kicking, I think if he nails a few shots early he will have more spring in his step. Confidence players who miss usually go down like the Titanic.

I put his poor form down to a severe lack of quality inside 50's and opposition defenders have figured out how to nullify his strengths.
Drew has had it pretty easy up forward forward for the past few years, relying on his freakish athleticism. He now has to use his head to rise up to this new challenge. I believe in him and think he will be able too.

This thread is a disgrace and the title of it being continually on our board Is absolutely disrespectful to a club legend.

Our new gameplan generates some of the worst ball movement going around, especially into our 50.

It's absolute chaos down there, with crumbers flying for marks, mids blocking space and Drew getting mobbed by 3 defenders each time.

Of course you are going to
lose a bit of touch.

We really miss Brett Allison who is a forward through and through and understands how a forward 50 should run.

I'm genuinely curious - why is his run up so short all of a sudden? There is no forward momentum at all and you could just tell he is going to miskick it.

What gives? I don't think it has always been the same.

Must be low on confidents, never seen him juggle the ball so much. One stage the ball was kicked in his area and instead of attacking the ball he was too concerned to wrestle his opponent.

I actually think that the players don't line themselves up properly with the centre of the goals and I think that is part of Drew's problem. He kicks very straight through the ball so if he is off on an angle from centre it's always a chance to miss before you factor in all the other variables in goal kicking.
