Just on this one (and it may be pure myth).

I think I read/heard that Port had a little interest in Varcoe but baulked at our asking price.

A lot of that was because they were committed to using their first pick in the Polec deal.

So, the suitor may well have been there but the pieces/desire to make something happen wasn't.

My memory of it was that it was either our price or his contract. Varcoe would still have a certain value to a side with a lot of mature , inside players. He would look good at Freo imo....and the Crwos didn't have a many picks did they?

Out of Caro's article regarding Melbourne's bid for a priority pick.

If it is correct that Frawley could finish up at Geelong or Hawthorn for a similar contract to that which Melbourne is offering, then it is no wonder free agency is on the nose. All the coaches who attended AFL chief Gillon McLachlan’s dinner last month made their disdain known for the system. The gap between the rich and poor clubs will surely widen if the trend of players leaving bottom-four clubs for top-four clubs for similar money continues.

Worse for Melbourne is the fact that Frawley’s past and future contracts could be structured in a manner that would earn the club relatively poor compensation and not the automatic first-round choice that has been mooted.

Probably not what Melbourne supporters would want to hear, especially since the Priority Pick request is unlikely to get up.

Seems as though Toumpas might be available after all. It's one thing to want to trade him out but the Demons can't be expecting Rd1 picks for eveyone they lose.

I get the theory of trading players out and I get the feeling Toumpas is on the outer with Roos but they can't expect a Top 15 pick for a guy whose achievements so far total being pick 4 overall 3 years ago.
Sam they can't expect clubs to trade out Joel Selwood for them either.

Will be interesting to see how they approach this.....

Indeed. There's a lot of crap they will get rid of and we might just pick up a bargain! It will be of interest to see if Roos replaces all the guys he gets rid of with draft picks or players from other clubs. Probably both.

Thing is now, he has about 6 new high picks and players in front of him and is not setting the world on fire at Casey. Follow that with another high pick or two this year and he is a LONG way back.

For the right price, worth a look for mine.

I posted something about this on the Melb board. How quick does a player lose or gain from their draft position.... go onto the GWS & GC boards and they feel they should still be getting close to what they paid . I'm sure Melb hope for the same.

I've thought for a while that once you have spent the pick and they are on you list the pick position is almost becomes redundant. Certainly the longer they are on the list , the less relevant it is. Its like who is in front at the 1000M in a 10,000M event. Obviously Melb paid less than what Tyson cost because the got later picks upgraded. What did we end up paying for Caddy? Probably about the same but in Y2 he played a lot of footy. Players who fail to advance seem to fall. You must have shown something. I'd have thought with the Melb players , even Wells would adjust his assessments based on what they have done compared to what he thought Pre Draft.

The value for a club getting them may come from the over valuing of a draft kid.. that happen every year. If we traded one in , and they stepped straight into the side and played 5 years plus then I'd say they are well worth a R1 pick , especially when we have a good group of youth already developing and how late our R1 is.

For example , if Grimes came to GFC , played in the BP , became one of the best small rebounding defenders a pick around 16-20 would certainly be well spent.Thing is it just doesn't seem to work that way , I think they will struggle to get R1's for individual players.

He did arrive at Melbourne with a known hip problem and this year missed a month or so of footy with appendicitis.

Coupled with patchy form and low confidence means he probably hasn't really presented a strong case for himself to date.

But he did Captain the SA side at U18 level in '12 (and carried the hip problem through the Champs) and was playing senior footy in the SANFL as a 17 year old (his 5th games was the Eagles Grand Final win).

The few times I've seen him, he looks to be played out of position (think Smedts with us down back). I also didn't think his senior games were as terrible as people think.

I doubt anyone would part with a top 10 pick based on his output at Melbourne but I still think he is worth something in the mid-late teens.

I'm biased but I like the cut of his jib.

If there is anything in the Kerridge rumour, Adelaide might want to do an exchange (I reckon, in the long run, they'd come out in front with that swap).

I agree with all you say Piv but as much as his rep has said is a top end player , I never seen it. Ive seen Trengove do more pre injury. Id bet London to a brick Melb are spewing they never took Wines.
If we said Toumpa is like ..... who would it be? Not as inside as Caddy? Not as quick as Murdoch? He seems to have been a midfield distributor of the ball , someone who is used in the link of the chain. Would Duncan be a fair comparison?

There not that desperate to lose him that they would trade him for a bag of chips and half a block of chocolate. They aren't going to trade players like Watts, Trengrove, Grimes and Toumpas unless they get a decent offer. I doubt that they would trade any of them out for anything less than a top 20 pick, which would still be at discount rates. T.Hunt won't get the job done.

Melbourne bypassed Wines because they had a similar type coming to them in Viney.

2 years on that might not look like a great decision but at the time it was fair I reckon.

Duncan is a bit more contested but that isn't a bad comparison.

When I've seen Toumpas play well, the guys I think of are Dal Santo and Pearce.

He probably doesn't have the speed of Pearce but I think Toumpas shares some traits of those guys.

The trick is harnessing it.

Dees supporters don't think he's up for trade either. One guy even suggested Murdoch for him.

However, they will get a rude shock if they think they are going to get anything like decent return on their investment in Watts, Trengove etc etc etc. You had the cash purchased the wrong stock and it plummeted... move on.
