The worst thing to ever happen to Ben Reid

What? Reid's been getting injured almost every year since 2010. Broke his damn leg in the Grand Final for god's sake. Guy is glass. Brown isn't much better.

Would love to hear the reasoning on this one. It's clear we can't keep him on the park. It's got nothing to do with ability as a player, but at this point, we're heading down the Sean Rusling track. That was pretty clear before the recent contract extension. Successful football clubs make the hard calls. Trading Reid definitely would have come under a hard call, but before we did the extension, he had HUGE currency.

Even if we wanted to trade him now, he'd be worth jack because everyone knows he's made of glass.

Too much doomsday going on with this.
He will be fine some players will have a lot of injuries over a short period too.
Geelong stuck fat with Stevie, let's do the same as I think Reido can be a big part of our next premiership tilt.

The scariest aspect of this is that 2015 is the first year of his new four year deal. Talk of trading him is one thing, but signing him to that sort of deal was mindboggling...

Are you sure it wasn't a four year deal starting from when it was signed?

This is probably a biased view but I feel like we have had a disproportionate number of highly talented players with injury affected careers resulting in us never seeing their best or only seeing it for a year or two.

The bloke is made of glass it seems.
No doubt this injury will drag out through the pre season.
Then will turn into a "1-2 week" injury, which we all know means indefinite

Perhaps you could plot it on a graph? If you can prove your view it would not be biased.

From what I'm seeing a three year extension on top of 2014 is still very concerning. At the time I thought it was rediculous to give him the deal we did and there was a number of us on here hailed down for voicing that opinion.

Unfortunately he now has scar tissue on every muscle within both legs except his right quad. That is only going to get worse with age...

Anyone putting up his 2010-2013 games played total I think is looking at the exception rather than the rule with Ben!

How can 4 years be an exception when compared to 1 year?

Time to move on from Reid, we are carrying too many injury prone players. Cut your losses pies. Goldsack is his replacement. He is a similar size but bigger, plays very well as key back or forward, tough as nails, tackles like a lion on a rampage, and makes good decisions. I don't see why we go on about Reidy when Goldy can surpass him in both areas (if left in place) and rarely injures himself. Fn champion.
Laughable comparison.

Long term deals are very risky in the AFL with consideration to restrictions on trading and the salary cap. There's very little wriggle room if things don't pan out. A deal that at the time was forecasting 5 years into the future for an injury prone player is concerning list management. I can only assume that we have taken advice from our medical staff (the doctor we have since moved on) and specialists and were happy at the time with the prognosis. I just hope Reid proves us all wrong and his body holds up. He is so important for the side.

He went along way to costing us the 2011 GF. He's been injured more often than not since. Contributed to the Brisbane loss this year. For me he's done. He should've been traded. It's too late now. Another year of interruption from him. He'll cost us another game with his injuries should he get back out there for long enough.
The sky is falling, the sky is falling, the sky is falling!!!

Thank you for taking a one line grab of my post out of context!

He had injuries in 07, 08, 09, 14 & will miss a large chunk of pre-season for 2015. Therefore he has spent most of his career injured in comparison with that stretch.

To further reiterate (considering you skipped over the most important element of my post) he has scar tissue on every muscle in his legs bar his right quad and in the years he was relatively untroubled (10-13) he broke a leg, strained two quads, strained his groin in two separate finals series and dislocated his shoulder while on ******* holidays!! The man is unfortunately made of glass.

My issue isn't with him I wish him all the best in his recovery because he is essential for our chances of success! My gripe is with the morons that signed him up long term when he is the last player on our list that should have been offered 3 years or more.

This is something we can all get behind!

Edit: I should add that I believe there is a place in the game for long term deals and guys like Cloke, Pendles and Steele would meet the criteria that I would set for it.
