It's a tough one, as his decision making was dodgy as hell under Bucks and he's made himself a significantly better player by simply taking territory - running his full measure and kicking it long to a contest. He may not have the awareness to play a different way.
I don’t know if it was dodgy or whether that’s how Buckley wanted the game played. He seemed to always lead up to the player with the ball for a 15m pass. It seemed to just be part of the slow movement and keeping possession.

We call a lot of blokes "3rd" talls because of their dimensions. I didn't watch much of Essendon last year. Were there two tall forwards playing in addition to him, or like Johnson last year did he play as one of two marking forwards?

Brisbane: two tall forwards, one who also chopped out in the ruck.

Carlton; got a lot better when injury shifted them away from playing 3 tall forwards - probably at their best with 2 - one of them chopping out in the ruck

Collingwood: Two tall forwards and a 2nd ruck.

etc..

Port were just about the only team I know of who often had a third tall forward in their line up - however one of the 3 also chopped out in the ruck. Footscray a disastrous attempt to go in packed with tall forwards.

A third tall marking specialist, who doesn't ruck? Probably only teams running with it if one of your two main forwards does the ruck chop out.

Cats are the best exemption with Ollie playing tall - but their ruck set up is a bit different due to Blicavs and Hawkins forwardline excellence in the ruck and Jezza is a bit different too.

The trend is towards an extra small rather than an extra tall, becuase most of the smalls are expected to be able to time a lead and take an uncontested mark.
But why can’t a 190cm player to this?
I think that’s exactly what Johnson and McInness should be doing. Cox should be the target for a long kick forward.

I meant more once he had the ball. If it was anything other than long down the line for territiory, he always had be nervous.

They can. Blokes of all heights can. Jordy can, but he'll offer a heap more than that as a forward and won't be called a third tall - despite being the same height as "3rd talls". Same with Elliott, Schultz, etc. hopefully Reef will be able to. I'm really talking about the blokes who are predominately mark and kick - who get called a third tall. They haven't really got a place as a third tall - as teams don't often load their forward line with aerial specialists. They either play as one of the two main talls or they have to offer a ground level game and pressure to go with the marking and kicking. I'm skeptical of Johnson being more than a mark and kick specialist and I don't think you can play 3 blokes who are aerial specialists, unless one of them can chop out in the ruck. At the moment, Cox is our real 3rd tall - we're not going to play a 4th.

Maybe its just me, but I'm really liking Reefs marking this year. I think he is almost a KPF with hybrid traits. There are plenty of KPFs that are shorter. People keep saying he is not a KPF. He is the same age as Daicos and I would love for him to get big minutes in the forward line this year for his development.

His marking is something that ive noticed all pre-season. Whether that's come from getting stronger physically or what, but definitely a thing thats been a standout from what I had seen.

I thought Johnson played his role. Took a couple of contested marks and brought ball to ground in most contests, rarely out marked. He has proven if he plays his role goals will come. Cox/Cameron to provide another target up forward.
Dean and Frampton look serviceable in the back line, Frampton probably just ahead atm.
Fin needs game time and doesn’t look out of place, if Pendelbury or Mitchel need resting he is ready.
Reef next in-line but probably needs one of the small forwards to unavailable to get in, how bad was Bobby’s hammy cramp? Could he miss the GWS game? If so Reef is ready.
v GWS
Ash - Frampton (Fwd)
Shooter - Ginnivan
Frampton (Back) - Murphy
Lipinski - McCreery (Sub)

Unlucky but cover for the likes of Hill, Howe & Pendles/Mitchel

Reef / Dean / Fin

I will take this to the pre game thread 😂

My issue with AJ is that if he doesnt mark it, he stops. Very few follow ups or tackles. Improve that part and he could be anything.
After all the positive talk that he had bulked up, trained hard and was looking to take the competition by the scruff of the neck and give it a good shake, I expected a lot more than just a rehash of what I have seen from him in the last few seasons. He was disappointing. Doesn't appear to have added anything to his game.

The old ‘a player needs 50 games to really get going’ might be the issue with some of our ‘almost’ or ‘nearly there’ players like AJ, Reef, Fin and Dean.

For a whole range of reasons, including our success, these guys have had limited (or non-existent) game time in the last two years. I may be wrong - and I’m sure I’ll be corrected - but in the years when we struggled under Bucks (e.g. 2014-17) we seemed to have a lot of players in and out of the side. We also had that horror (nightmarish) run of injuries in Bucks’ era.

I reckon these guys would have had much more exposure at senior level in many other clubs. And we’d know a lot more about how good they can be. They are still miles off the magic 50 games.

I fundamentally agree with you, although Cal Brown proves that there are exceptions to every rule! 70-odd games I think it was in the end. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Is it just me or did anyone notice that IQ was a bit off his usual reliable self? I know he had 23 disposals, but he was dropping some marks, missing tackles and at times fumbly with the ball. I put it down to pre-season blues and the inconsequential nature of the game. Hope he will come good when season starts proper.

I'm sure he will be fine. A bit of fumbling, inaccuracy & slipping over from everyone on both sides.

Yeah.
He was a little.
But he started last year a bit the same.

He's really your 3rd tall, not a key position forward you can bomb the ball to. Like Stephenson and Johnson he needs space to lead into or he struggles to impact

He did nothing wrong, he was playing on a 1st gamer from Rugby though, and only played the 2nd half.

He found himself on multiple opponents including manning and beating Shai Bolton on the lead at one stage.

Also had a 2v1 where he outpointed 2 Richmond players bought it down and helped mop up, kicking is also very good. Imo he looks a player.
