When we had to rely on McGregor to save us, in hindsight our flag chances were shot.

I best bet in hindsight was Pavlich.

Not true. Kenny as a 16 and 17 year old was the much smarter and wiser choice. We took Kenny McGregor as a 17 year old.

Pav only exploded as a player his 17th year

Not then. Pavlich ahead of Carey.

I understand why we didnt go for Pav as a kid, mind you Port did the same as well.

GWS and Western Bulldogs will have youth and natural improvement in them.

Maybe we are more of a 3 to 8 side them. 5 teams - crows, swans, Geelong, West Coast and maybe the Hawks are equal.

GWS yes, footscray probably not. They got luckier than...

Positive - looks like we are getting Gibbs

Positive - we are not losing a quality player , we are essentially keeping our team together ( I even hope we keep Lyons ) and are adding a quality player

Positive - Hamish and recruiters are involved and have given their thoughts on next years draft and what they can do ( with a pick downgrade or whatever)

Positive - there are ways to move up draft order

Negative - Adelaide BigFooty Board goes FULL LINDY

:p

Danger was an out of contract RFA while Gibbs has 3 years on his contract so are clearly not comparable and Tippett was clearly not our trading departments fault. I have no idea weather we could have got Hampton cheaper than we did and I doubt you do either but from what I saw late in the year I think he will be a bargain anyway.
Still not seeing where we have been reamed at the trade table, how do you think we have stayed such a competitive side without high picks otherwise.
Danger never put forward a free agent offer, it was a trade from start to finish.
If you think a player like Gibbs, who is not elite, is worth more than, or the same even, than a top 3 player in the game because he is in contract you are nuts.
To me it looks like we have nothing else in the works for trade week (which is a concern) that the club is so desperate to do something that they are going to sell the farm to get it over the line.
To pay well overs for Bryce only serves to hurt us in the long term.
And if you think adding Bryce to our list os going to be the difference between winning or not winning a flag your nuts.

More than one stalemate out there..

Star midfielder Jaeger O’Meara could be forced to nominate for the AFL national draft

HAWTHORN could walk away from negotiations with Gold Coast over midfielder Jaeger O’Meara in a move that could force the Suns’ star into the national draft.

Talks between the two clubs have slowed to a halt with the Suns unwilling to accept the Hawks’ two top picks, which are No. 10 and No. 48, for O’Meara.

Hawthorn believe a first-round and third-round pick is a fair deal for a player who has not played a single senior game over the past two seasons due to serious knee injuries.

The Hawks swapped their first pick from next year’s draft in a bid to gain No. 10 in this year’s draft from St Kilda, but it has failed to appease the Suns.

Instead, Gold Coast wants a senior player from Hawthorn, but the players they have targeted from Waverley have refused to join the Suns.

Hawthorn cannot trade a senior player to the Suns without the player’s consent.

The dramatic stalemate threatens to force O’Meara, 22, into the national draft if the two clubs are unable to agree to a trade deal for the Rising Star winner before Thursday’s 2pm trade deadline.

If O’Meara enters the national draft, the Suns would potentially be left red-faced if it lost the glittering ball-winner for nothing.

The AFL has made clear its two struggling Queensland clubs can help rebound from continued disappointing performances by using the correct trade and draft mechanisms to bolster their squads.

However, sources said the Suns may want to make a statement to deter other players who may consider walking out on the franchise club next year.

Entering the draft could be a devastating blow for O’Meara who would have to hope he is not taken by another club before Hawthorn’s No. 10 selection in the national draft.

Former St Kilda midfielder Luke Ball found his way to Collingwood’s No. 30 selection in 2009 after confronting the same dilemma.

O’Meara could also choose to enter the preseason draft, but would certainly be taken by Essendon with the No. 1 pick.

Essendon has a keen interest in O’Meara, but the player’s manager, Colin Young, is adamant the Suns’ star will get to the club of his choice, which is Hawthorn.

O’Meara could put a big price on his head to help deter unwanted clubs from taking him in the national draft and could also sign for only one season, or spend one year out of the game.
Young had crucial talks with Gold Coast representatives on Tuesday in a bid to help clinch the deal but the Suns are standing firm on their demands.

Gold Coast president Tony Cochrane previously said O’Meara owes the Suns for all the help they have provided him during his time on the sidelines.

“We are very disappointed because he has been with us for four years but has only played football for the club for two of those years,” Cochrane said.

“We have put a lot of time, effort, money, resources, made sure he had the best medical advice and took him to London to make sure he had the best surgeon on that first knee operation.

“So we think we have invested a lot in the person, we had great faith in the individual and we built our whole junior program on the Gold Coast around Jaeger’s Juniors.

“We unfortunately — and perhaps foolishly — believed that it would be repaid by him re-signing with us for at least another two years and we made a very substantial offer on that basis which he has chosen to reject.

“It might be old fashioned but loyalty is a two-way street. It is not a dead-end road.”

Tredders on 9 saying our chances of getting Gibbs are drifting cause Carlton want 2 first rounders for him. No mention of any picks coming back to us.

this shows people in the media have no real idea because some were edging closer to a deal others say were drifting further apart from a deal.

Carlton gave up pick 3, Kennedy (worth a first rounder) and 30 for for Chris Judd in his prime.

We are giving up 2 first rounders (admittedly lower first rounders) for an older Gibbs.
pick 3 pick 20 and Kennedy

If we get a second round pick back this deal will be a steal

Its not happening ( 2 first rounders), unless we nail a gritty half back/mid as well. We don't make trades like that. It's unfair on the message we're telling the playing group.

What Ricciuto said last week, is our bible.

Do GCS need pick 10 for their academy picks? And would anyone in the top 9 draft O'Meara? Seems like a solid outcome for Hawthorn if it happens. And would be another self-sabotaging move by GCS.

This is from the Carlton website:

Discussions continue between Carlton and the Adelaide Football Club ahead of the AFL’s Trade Period deadline on Thursday afternoon.

General Manager of List Management and Strategy Stephen Silvagni says there have been ongoing discussions with the Crows in recent days, after Bryce Gibbs signalled his desire to return to his home state due to personal reasons.

“There have been discussions with Adelaide to settle on a fair trade, but while we are empathetic to Bryce’s personal situation, Bryce has a contract with the Carlton Football Club and we expect him to see it out,” Silvagni said.

“He is a contracted player, however as yet, no deal has been put forward that we feel would sufficiently match the value of Bryce; given his standing as a 200-plus game leader at our football club.

“Obviously the two clubs have their respective positions on what is a fair trade, so we will continue to work through this.”

Silvagni added that discussions also remain ongoing following Zach Tuohy’s request to explore his options elsewhere.

“Zach has chosen to explore his options, but we are close to a deal on this, and confident we will get a good outcome for our football club,” Silvagni said.

The NAB AFL Trade Period officially closes at 2:00pm on Thursday afternoon.

If the deal is pick 13 and 2017 1st for Gibbs and 2017 2nd that doesn't stress me at all.

We had our 1st & 2nd rounders taken off us for 2 years and it didn't really effect us as we played finals 2 years after. We need not to worry about it and back ourselves in to win flag or at least come close.

Lets be serious out of Brisbane Carlton and Collingwood I cant see any other teams in bottom 3 unless a team gets hit majorly with injuries. Brisbane and Carlton clear bottom 2 imo.

Agree to disagree. I feel getting Carey was the correct choice.

Yeah its hard to make the right assessment because Carey did his knee and sustained a career ending neck injury.

But we did pay massive overs for a player that was washed up almost when he arrived.

He did give us a night flag.:$ That was actually a fairly good game he played too in that final, but cant seem to find it on youtube.

if you think relying on our current midfield or our lack of genuine midfielders in the SANFL to improve is good enough to win a flag your nuts will need more stars.

A woman rang 5AA and was blubbering and crying about something to do with footy (can't remember what)...her name was Lindy.
It was after sanderson got sacked on 5aa and bone was saying it was the most brutal decision the club had ever made... Lindy rang up and basically Had a mental breakdown throughout the phonecall.
