Interesting that the whining is coming nearly exclusively from those latter three clubs.
Jordan Roughead is awesome. Did you see him in the finals? He was an absolute freak. Zac Smith had his moments in 2016, too.

Also, Nicholls and Hampson are very average ruckman. I have no idea how you're lumping those two ruckman with the rest of that stellar group.

So how will they umpire this, every single throw up or throw in they will ask who is going for the ruck knock??
Your ruckman could be standing there and at the last second another player calls out its me and goes for it?

Another stupid rule change, made by a very stupid organisation. They have changed so many rules they are now stuck for ideas, let's start putting rules in place to stop people how they actually play now.
How on earth have the 18 clubs allowed these clowns to keep stuffing up the game.

It will be a lot more easier to umpire, which is one of the virtues of the change. Rucks apparently already nominate.

Interesting that they stopped ruckman being dominant in a one on one strength contest (case in point Matthew Primus rule) where the stronger ruckman could beat the taller one. Now they stop 3rd man up where the jumping player can beat the taller ruckman.

Does Sandilands really write the rules?

It's actually on topic. Would Melbourne have offered Lewis a 3 year contract had this rule change been announced before the trade period? How can the AFL justify such a fundamental change to the game AFTER clubs have made decisions on list management?

I can't imagine Melbourne would be complaining. They are on the right side of this rule change - Gawn will be unstoppable. They needed Lewis for added leadership, knowledge and experience. Third up was just a bonus.

Sandilands gets about 1% of the frees he should

You should watch him try to ruck sometimes. Blocked. Bumped. Hands held. Sandwiched in marking contests so he can't jump. But sure - he had a cry and asked for the rules to be changed

You really think we went after Lewis for his 2 hitouts a game? The *?

The only bloke really happy about this absurdity is this turkey!...

As opposed to the 56% of voters in the poll who support the ban.

Funny how Geelong and Hawthorn fans (and to a lesser extent Bulldogs) seem to be the most vocal against the ban

Sandi has copped the worst deal by the umps of any player in the afl over the last decade. His arms get chopped 20 times a game and he gets holidays for protecting his space...write his own rules??? You must be joking.

I mean, would you argue with him?

And if you think he is not the greatest benficiary of this rule change, you must be joking.

I'm discussing the rule change not the umpire's ability to apply the rules.

See above. Discussing the rule, not the umpire ability to enforce it.

Absurdity? It's an excellent rule change.
Pointless and unnecessary...can we go one year without that imbecile Evans screwing around with the rules? Lyon will be ecstatic. More packs, more negativity...perfect for his style of coaching. Players will adapt, but FFS the game is confusing enough already...I can't stand sycophantic hacks who compensate for their mediocrity with kiss-up BS and Evans is a master at submission to the will of coaches who he should ignore at every turn.

For all those these jibes about teams not having "recognised ruckmen":

Aaron Sandilands - no flags
Todd Goldstein- no flags
Max Gawn - hasn't even played a final

Meanwhile:

Jordan Roughead - premiership ruckman
Ben McEvoy - premiership ruckman

Recognise that!

Do you think 1 or 2 less hitout a game via third man is going to hurt the teams already proven to be the best? You've got rocks in your head.
