Ablett coming home

Given we now know how serious Ablett's personal issues are Gold Coast should just get the best deal they can, pick or otherwise and move on. He's probably only got one or two years left anyway and he's certainly not playing for them.

If he has serious issues, and he doesn’t himself then retirement is probably the best option.

I don’t want Gc to be soft here and just give in and give him away to look like the nice guys.

I don’t trust or like Geelong or Gary and I’d rather this trade be like business as usual.

Anyone who thinks Gold Coast should give up Ablett cheaply because of his recent family tragedy is being naive. Same for people who keep bringing up his age and injury concerns. The upside of a fit Ablett running around for Geelong is too much to ignore. GC are well within their rights to demand a high price. Having said that though, I wouldn't blame the Cats for not wanting to do that deal on the basis that they are a little thin on talented youngsters and can't afford to skip another draft.

Surely Geelong won't use Abletts tragedy to try to get him home cheaply.

If they had any sense of decency they should offer a fair and reasonable price of a pick in the 20s so that he doesn't have the stress of clubs haggling over his price in what will be a very difficult week for him.

Gary is not contracted to Geelong, it's really an issue between the Gold Coast and Gary not up to a third party to resolve. And if trades of similar elite players close to retirement are any guide, what Gold Coast is asking for Gary is manipulative in the extreme. They should be ashamed of themselves for trying to profit from a player's circumstances that warrants compassion, especially after he has given and done for them during his time there.

Given what has happened, the Suns should just let him go freely. Family is a million times more important than football.

Really? The issues with his sister are well known and been going on for years.

Without being a complete bastard, if Gary was so concerned about his sisters addictions and mental health, why did he move up to the Gold Coast to start with? Sure, this is a tragedy, but if family is more important than football, Gary could void his contract and walk away from the game. Wants his cake and eat it, if family is number 1, he should've headed home some time again.

Of course a Geelong supporter sees it this way.

Fact is, he's just won a best and fairest and will be in your top ten players easily next year. Could be the difference to win you the flag.
And the cats won't pony up a pick in the 20s because they think they can guilt Gold Coast into giving him up for a nominal pick? Would be digraceful if those at the Cats thought the same way as you do.

F*** me.

Because he financially supports virtually his entire family. That’s why.

So why didn’t West Coast have to pony up someone in the 20s for mitchell, who while not as good as Ablett, has been far more physically durable at the back end of his career and still in great form?

The club has said very little. A deal will be struck if that I’m sure now. Pickering will have power of attorney to sign it on his behalf so he can grieve.

Just find the demands of “give up this, give up that” laughable. For about the millionth time, they want player(s) not picks.

Probably because he was only going to play for one year. As well as freeing up salary cap and midfield time for new players OMeara and Mitchell.

I'm confident Geelong the club won't be pricks about it.
They will be reasonable.

Cats fans pre-trade "he's a broken down old man he's maybe got a year left....he's worth virtually nothing"

Cats fans post-trade "we just got the best player in the competition for a bag of chips. We're gonna win the flag next year"

Isn't that every trade?

This goes both ways.

If GC had any decency he will be the last round pick....

That's us in an absolute nutshell. We are the good guys in every damn trade yet are one of the most hated clubs in the competition because all fans are envious that we have avoided bottoming out for so long without Sydney concessions

No. This is using his tragedy to guilt a club to give their best player away for nothing.

Geelong the club wouldn't be pricks about it in this way.
We won't be pricks in a trade? Obviously we won't.

But we should because GC haven't shipped off Gaz. Gaz wants us. Gaz would also want it to be as cheap as possible for better chance of success

Great logic

The question is what is the worth of a bloke who, while he can still play, is 34 and slowing down?

If it were say Dale Morris, who while no Ablett is still an All Australian premiership player in good form at about 34, and he were leaving because of serious family issues I would expect us to facilitate the trade and would expect little in return.

People are getting caught up on the fact he's been a superstar. He isn't now and won't be around very long.
