The whole industry is Vic-centric year on year. "Poor draft year" usually means Vic Metro is shit and Vic Country not much better.

Champs shows how well certain groups perform as a team but it doesnt mean all those players are draftable, or should be up the top end.

For instance, there is a noticable trend year on year that SA is smaller right across the board. They have shorter midfielders and shorter talls. Its veyr rare for sub 175cm midfielders to get drafted, let alone be right up the top end, even though they might have performed well at the Champs.

I look at someone like Mitch Crowden for example. Had a great year in his draft year, was picking up high 30's disposals at under 18's and reserves level, played senior footy, had a great champs. But at 173cm, was never going to go high, even though he was one of the form players of the season.

That's just the way it is.
Is this a talent id issue , where SA picks kids that are suited more to win championships than become elite AFL players.

I've been watching a lot of junior football and to me this seem to be a issue, selecting kids that have the asset of finding the footy but nothing else really matters.

Can any draft nuts who follow this religiously please take a crack at who we might draft with our first 3 selections?

Are we any chance of landing McAsey, Bergman, & Stephens?

Pick 12 Dylan Stephens (forward) or Fisher McCasey (key forward/defender)

Pick 18 Jeremy Sharp (wing & hbf), Josh Worrell (key forward/defender) or Will Gould (defender)

Mead will be our 3rd.

I don’t really follow these kids pre-15/16 years old but I suspect there is a massive issue with junior levels not identifying future kpps and giving them development in that roles

I imagine they are concerned about the immediate results that developing running ball winning players gets and teaching the future key position players fundamentals that aren’t likely to really pay off until years later if at all Isn’t a high priority.

Every year In SA we have 195-197cm prospects come through who play a bit of ruck and a bit of back and a bit of forward or maybe even midfield.

I’m not the least bit surprised we are the poorest traditional state at developing key position players by a country mile.

I’m pushing for us to upgrade #29 to #22 (see above). At #12 we get either McAsey or Weightman, at #18 we get Williams or Worral (if we go tall at 12 we go small at 18 and vice versa) and at #22 Taheny. Mead comes with late picks.

If we wanted Stephens we wouldn’t have traded 10 down to 12. Bergman is a chance at #18 but given the success we had with Rozee who had a great U16 carnival but not a great U18 carnival, I think we play that card again on Williams who was top 5 this time last year.

Yes all 3 should be available at our first pick.

I think we'll go McAsey, Rivers and match a bid on Mead. If a bid doesn't come, then I think we'll pick Rantall.

You think Stephens will be available at 12????????

I really don't know. I can see him being there at 12. I can see him being there at 12 and us not taking him. But I can also see him going in the top 10 as well, so it's a tricky one.

So we have 35 on the primary list:
- Started with 40
- Ryder, Howard, Frampton, Broadbent, Trengove, Johnson out + S Gray uncontracted
- Lienert & Ladhams upgraded

We can only take as many picks to the draft as we have live list spots, ie 5.

If Mead makes is past 29 (or 22 per shewho 's sweet trade idea), only 66 & 67 are available to be used for matching bids.

If we sign on any DFAs, we would be down to 4 active list spots, so only 66 would be used for matching bids.

Sounds like signing on S Gray or picking up a DFA could be the difference between going into deficit next year or not.

Interesting times.

Also, If we could snare a combo of the below guys before Mead gets bid on I'd be pretty happy I reckon (#sackhinkley ):
12 - Worral/McAsey/Gould
18 - Sharp/Dylan Williams
29 - Elijah Taylor/Bergman

Combo of late picks for Mead.

Hope one of Hilder or Finlay slides

Note: Not one second of footage have I watched this year.

Looks like McAsey tested a bit taller and heavier at draft camp than his previous stats. 197cm 91kg is a good size for a player before he even hits the AFL.

Josh hart is 205cms and played sanfl reserves this year after only playing footy for 2 years prior. He was eligible for the draft as an over ager. Clubs wanted to see more of him and he was very close to playing state as a ruckmen that can pinch hit fwd if needed in the rotations. He didnt play a single game and i think that defeats the purpose of a future KPP/rucks development. There were 2 - 3 rucks that couldve played all very even in what they could provide. However instead of sharing the opportunity a kid with the most upside (205cms) didnt get a single game after being part of the squad. In turn a ruckmen that didnt have the same upside in terms of potential, growth etc. plays every game when he was no chance of being drafted. The focus on winning the carnival and not giving players with the most upside and potential to be drafted is an interesting one.

Imagine my fury if we don’t pick him. They would want to nail the draft if they pass over Stephens.

While I quite like aspects of Worrell and sharp, Worrell sharp and Bergman would have incredible bust potential as a group.

195 was already a very good size for a kpp and suited his game fine. 197 is an excellent size but with mcasey the important thing would me maintaining that mobility / running.

The good thing with him is he is a guy who knows how to play his position. You wouldn’t be trying to develop him into a kpp, he already is one. Just have to develop him into a very good one.

Well it depends who we overlook him for.

I have him at 6, so if he is there I would want him, and I imagine he'll be best available from my list at our first pick. But if we go McAsey, i'd be very happy also.

I think almost everyone here has their heart set of Stephens, but I can see us having others in front of him

Will Gould clocked in at 106kg - that’s a huge 18 year old. Lucky for him he’s a ******* good footballer.
He was listed at 98kg before that article went up and twomeys latest one. I don't think he is that heavy 98kg seems more accurate imo.
