Hottest 100 of the '10s

Was so bloody hard to pick Foals this year. They had multiple bangers across both albums. I feel like the embarrassment of riches will come back to haunt them if the votes are dispersed too much. Don't see a repeat of 2016 when Mountain At My Gates made the top 20. Hopefully get a few songs in there somewhere at least.

Also REALLY hoping a Slipknot of Northlane make the 100. There was a meme last year that really got on my nerves during the countdown. Bring Me The Horizon came in at 45 with Mantra and a meme started circulating saying 'Me trying to enjoy a chilled hottest 100 then Mantra by BMTH comes on' and there was some distressed person. Obviously these campaigners have short memories because Parkway Drive had two songs in the top 60 a few years earlier. But it unfortunately said a lot about peoples current tastes and the move away from guitar driven music. If Mantra was too heavy for the Hottest 100 audience I would HATE to see what happens if Unsainted or 4D gets in.

thats my worry with Foals too, similar to Royal Blood back in 2014, they had Figure It Out, Ten Tonne Skeleton, Come On Over, Out Of the Black and Little Monster which were all cracking tracks but they all took votes off each other and they ended up with none in the H100, and 4 of them in the 101-200 if I recall with only Out Of the Black not making it. could be the same with Foals this year between The Runner, Black Bull, Exits, On the Luna etc. I think The Runner makes the 100, and two of the others make the 101-200, I've seen alot of votes for The Runner on my socials.

both Slipknot and Northlane seem fairly safe to make it this year. on the point of people's current tastes, they just listen to whatever jjj tells them to and think it's cool, and we all know the j's don't give much exposure outside of their dedicated little late night shows to guitar driven music, triple j has been a legit pop station the last few years at least, it's gross to think Tones and I, Lizzo etc will chart this year, a few years ago this garbage would've either have been too s**t or too mainstream/poppy for triple j or the Hottest 100, but that's what it's at currently.

Dance Monkey just notched up its 23rd week as #1 on the ARIA Charts, tying the all-time Australian record of White Christmas from 1943. Also been #1 for 14+ weeks in Switzerland (17), Norway (16), Belgium (16), Netherlands (15) & Austria (14).

Remember when 12 weeks felt like an epic dynastic run. Dance Monkey is in striking distance of 6 months at #1. Will be interesting to see how that translates into JJJH100 contention, as whilst lots of people might like it fine, whether it is good enough to make their top 10 votes in sufficient numbers remains to be seen.

I really don't get it. I really like Johnny run away, Never seen the rain and The kids are coming, but I don't get the mass appeal for Dance monkey.

Chart music wasn't very good in 2019, so the #1s were mostly deserving. It just had little threat of being toppled (Don't Start Now the only decent contender in that time), plus she belts it out a bit over a dancey rhythm, and there hasn't been as much of that on the charts lately. And it had instantaneous addictive appeal.

Have Borderline as my #1, easily my favourite song over the past 12 months. Some other favourites were Ladbroke Grove by AJ Tracey, and Lupe Fiasco's King Nas and Happy Timbuck2 Day. Apart from that, I threw in Blinding Lights because I love that 80's synth.

I'd much rather have a LAV that's full of effort, talent, energy and what not win than some auto tuned wailing rubbish like Dance Monkey or Billie's bland and boring Bad Guy

I get the distaste with LAV going top 10 in the Hottest 100. Normally I would agree. But the Denzel LAV was a significant moment for the format, it seemed to draw much more international attention and appreciation to LAV. It isn't just a Triple JJJ audience type thing like it typically is, requiring us to regard it a little differently than we may have in the past.

There have been far worse contenders in recent years than Dance Monkey and Bad Guy. They may not be amazing, but if they feature in the top 10 I'm fine with that.

After that 6-10 gets a bit more unsure, but Gotye's big hit would definitely be in there. Plus there are all the album tracks to consider as well.

I still can't believe that Courtney Barnett only had 1 song make the top 200 last year. Fantastic sophomore album, big JJJ impact a few years earlier, and flatly ignored.
