2016 Draft Haul - a disaster?

Remove this Banner Ad

On the 2016 draft haul, fair enough that 20+ picks rarely turn out.

But they do sometimes turn out. Or at least they do for teams like Richmond and West Coast, and they did for us in the Rendell era.

Hamish in his time has almost zero (zero?) hits from picks 30+. He has had a lot of chances over the years. Many other recruiters in the same boat, but there’s no doubt he is not on Rendell’s class.
That's a terrible call

He looked so promising and his combination of speed and skill is exactly what we needed at the time. I'm not going to be too negative about the recruiters on this one. I can see what they were trying to do.

The big issue is that the insatiable desire to compete, noted by the recruiters, has gone missing. Is that on him or us?

Some of those are yet to be proven and we have others who just haven’t had the opportunity
Most of those were either rookie picks or 3rd or 4th rd.
It'sa decent haul and well above average considering the picks

I think Gallucci probably has late 1st round AFL talent but I'm just not sure he wants it bad enough and from what Godden said a lot of it seems to be between the ears with his lack of mental strength to push himself to the limit when he's gassed. Can't say I've ever seen Jordan sucking in the big ones like Rory Sloane after some of his gut busting running and repeat efforts.

I think you've hit the nail here. Seems like one who's happy simply to have been picked up in the 1st round, to be on an AFL list. He trots around with his "pornstash" and his arm sleeve, which is all fine, but when you've got the talent he has and you're not producing, how about you knuckle down, fly under the radar and put some runs on the board first.

I rated Gallucci high at the time of the draft, at times I wonder why and then other times you see flashes and think, yep that's why. He needs to get serious about being an AFL footballer though, because he may not be one for very long.

Unfortunately 2016 was probably the worst time for a draftee to come to us. Experienced, established 22, with a strong next 10 or so players. Very little expectation or opportunity to push into the AFL side. Likely very little interest from senior coaches in your development too. Then the club crashes down after a failed GF appearance and you're trying to develop as a footballer in the environment of the past 2 years?

Gallucci has the talent, but needs to find the desire, otherwise he becomes simply another Chris Ladhams or Troy Menzel.

That's a very low pass mark when we have no-one from 2016 playing regular games

Did he come from a dominant school/TAC U18 team?

Heard an interesting thing from a recruiter this week (not Crows) that sometimes clubs are a little reluctant to draft players who have come from very strong clubs/winning environments as juniors.

Which sounds counter intuitive but he said sometimes players who've had it easy don't instinctively defend, tend to run forward but not back etc

Callinan, Kelly, Greenwood, Keath, Murphy, Sholl, Butts.

Plus he was our Vic recruiter during Rendell's time.

Other than two of those which were special entry rookies, none of the other players on that list are exactly hits?

Kelly I suppose, but has he ever felt like he's not marginal in our team?

Whatever your biases, there's little doubt we've turned into a very ordinary team in the last 2 years. Much of it can be blamed on coaching/player management but our 2016 draftees should be coming along this year or next, and that's just not happening

These are our draft pick ups from 2016

Main draft
Gallucci - on the outer
Poholke - being kind he's a solid player
Himmelburg - a tease now and then
Signorello - who?
Davis - 1 or 2 glimpses at best

Rookies
Shaw - retained for medical reasons
pass
Jarman - sentimental choice only

Losses
Lyons
Henderson

If any of the drafted players had been delisted this year it would have come at no surprise apart from Gallucci, and only because of his 1st round status not form

Compare this to our notable pickups from draft/trades in our our dark 2012/13 Tippett sanction years
Atkins, Hartigan, Callinan, Betts, Podsiadly, M Crouch, Knight, Laird (elevation), Cameron, Kelly, Graham (notable for its sh!tness). Maybe add Jenkins in 2011 if they knew Tippett was leaving the following year.

2016 is not one of Hamish's better years. I know he wanted English and Pyke asked for a fast mid rather than a ruck (not an unreasonable request) but Hamish picked the wrong guy. would English have been a much better choice than O'Brien anyway?

ED: I forgot Signorello (easily done) Have added him now

Faaaark that’s a s**t crop

knew it was bad, just not that bad

isn’t he the same guy who still isn’t a regular, first 22 player?
Yeah probably shouldn't have worried about his dislocated shoulder and just kept playing

Has played 32 games but since being drafted in 16

How is galluci going with games or even doedee compare

Such a hack and to destroy sloane in a GF what a spud of a player

It's a challenge to Nicks & the coaching staff to get the best out of the Gooch's talent.

The 1st shot has been fired across the bow...

Let's be serious who have we on our list that has been a success since Rendell left

Matt Crouch who was almost picked by Rendell because he already had picked brad

Cmon Marty, you might want to delete this post because it’s a shocker.

Rendell almost picked Matt because he picked Brad? That’s a bizarre comment.

You’ve said many times drafting is 50-50 and is worse as the picks blow out, so you shoot yourself in the foot when you look at the lack of draft picks he’s had to work with. Not taking into account retention issues because we’ve been a s**t club:

Cameron -rookie
Atkins - pick in the 90s
Hartigan-rookie
ROB - rookie
Lever
Gov
Doedee
Fogarty
Milera

Keeping in mind the club lost him 3 firsts and 2 seconds when he started. Plus the lack of low draft picks.

Then throw in we’ve got a bunch of kids it’s way too early to make a call on because of our s**t selection philosophy you supported by backing in older players like Douglas and Mackay.

One day you’ll acknowledge where we are as a club doesn’t fall at Hamish’s feet, it’s been a s**t club with a s**t boys club culture. You kept saying Burton had nothing to do with where we are at, funny that Dunstall didn’t agree with you.

Anyway, I’ll leave it at that because you’ll come back with some nonsense ignoring all I posted and I’m not going through this again, it’s been told to you many times already.

Umm I've never said anything about Burton like that so stop talking BS

As for our list of course I put 90% blame on the recruiting manager

Why the F would you name CC Gov Lever they are gone

Unfortunatly you need to then draft well with picks you get for them

If you are honest you would say our list is in serious trouble of achieving anything, did you watch the game yesterday port didn't have their gun young players and still schooled us. Maybe we can swap Ports recruitment manager for ogilvie, would that work

Bullshit you never said the Burton thing was a beat up and had no issue on our performance, if I recall correctly you said something about conspiracy theories.

I know you put 90% of the list issues on the recruiting manager, we’ve read it about 1000 times. But every time you post and ignore everything else which goes with developing a list you make yourself look foolish. Stuff like s**t club culture failing to retain players, being done for salary cap rorts and losing 5 quality picks, lack of low draft picks.

You questioned the quality of the players he’s drafted, I gave you a heap of names, some with shitty picks. The players that left because the club couldn’t retain them, they are still quality picks. Should he have not picked Cameron with a rookie pick? We ended up getting Fogarty for him.

Port have done well in recent times, they have also made some list decisions that have paid off, as a club we weren’t so aggressive and didn’t maximise the talent in the super draft. Port also played all their players last year from that draft, we didn’t and went for Douglas and Mackay which you supported. Remember your comment Douglas was a best and fairest?

The problem is you are all over the place, you say you want one thing and then your actual selection philosophy indicate something else. You aren’t for developing the talent on our list, you’re like Pyke who wanted to play just the oldies and then you whinge because our kids are no good without even giving them a chance.

Show me where I have said that about Burton, too bad you won't be able to because I haven't

As for the list we both know time will tell but if predictions are anything to go by or what we saw of the youth yesterday your ideas seem irrelevant

Do you see us even making the eight for the next 3 years
