I’ll add that is exactly the feeling many of us have regarding the Commonwealth Games.

It’s Australia versus the rest. I can’t remember the last time we were beaten in the gold medal count. It’s tedious, expensive and is held in celebration of a period in history that should have been consigned to the history books a long time ago.

Edit - we finished 2nd in 2014 but have won every other count since 1986.

You’ll find the one thing that gives Melbourne credence is that its major sporting events are held in Melbourne, e.g., Melbourne Cup, AO, F1, AFL Grand Final.

Meanwhile, the Australian is reporting a 2019 study warned that hosting Commonwealth Games in regional Victoria would never stack up cost benefit wise.

p.s. the tennis and gp are pretty major world sporting events.

Not mention the mcg is the largest professional sports stadium on the planet. It has 2-3 games every weekend for half the year. Plus arguably the biggest annual cricket match on the planet. Perhaps only the Lords test is bigger.

And weird that you talk down cricket as a world sport, after soccer it is clearly the second biggest world team sport on the planet. Name another? Basketball probably comes in third.

I reckon it's a bit of a wank too but name another city that has a range of things like the AusOpen, F1, Spring Racing Carnival, AFL ( doesn't matter what you think about it, it's our nation's most popular spectator sport by a long way), cricket and lots of other less regular events like Rugby internationals, NRL S.O.O., you could probably thrown in the MotoGP, it's close enough to Melbourne.
